Kit Components

The kit includes the following parts:

  • A) Integrated mounting kit
  • B) ISO Faceplate
  • C) Tuner bypass
  • D) ISO Brackets
  • E) Two (#8 x 3/8") Phillips pan head screws [screw emoji]

Diagram shows the individual components labeled A through E. Component A is a black plastic dash trim piece. Component B is a faceplate with openings for a car stereo. Component C is a wiring adapter. Component D shows two metal mounting brackets. Component E shows two screws. A separate image shows the vehicle's dashboard area where the new stereo will be installed.

Installation Guide

CAUTION: Metra recommends disconnecting the negative battery terminal before beginning any installation. All accessories, switches, and especially air bag indicator lights must be plugged in before reconnecting the battery or cycling the ignition.

Note: Refer to the instructions included with the aftermarket radio.

Dash Disassembly (Ford Taurus/Mercury Sabel 2000-2003)

  1. Using the 86-5618 removal keys, pull the factory radio/climate control panel from the dash. (See Figure A)
  2. Disconnect the vacuum hose harness and connectors from the audio system, blower motor switch, A/C dampener door switch, and potentiometer.
  3. Remove the panel.

Kit Preparation (Ford Taurus/Mercury Sabel 2000-2003)

  1. Turn the factory climate control dials into a vertical position and pull the dials off. (See Figure A)
  2. Remove two 5/16" hex head screws securing the temperature/fan control switches and remove switches. Unclip the climate control switch and remove. (See Figure B)
  3. Mount switches to the back of the integrated mounting kit with the two supplied #8 x 3/8" Phillips pan head screws. (See Figure C)
  4. Holding the climate control dials in a vertical position, insert the dials onto the posts of the mounted switches and secure. (See Figure D)
  5. Remove two Torx head screws securing the mounting clips to the sides of the factory radio/climate control panel and remove the clips. (See Figure E)
  6. Mount the clips to the integrated mounting kit with the same Torx head screws. (See Figure F)

Figures A-D illustrate the process of preparing the climate control unit: A) shows the removal of climate control dials, B) shows the removal of hex screws securing switches, C) shows the mounting of these switches to the new kit using provided screws, and D) shows the reattachment of the climate control dials to the new mounting posts. Figures E-F show the removal and reattachment of mounting clips using Torx screws.

Kit Assembly

ISO Head Unit Provision

  1. Snap the ISO Faceplate into the radio opening. (See Figure A)
  2. Attach the ISO Brackets to the inner lip of the radio opening. (See Figure A)
  3. Slide the head unit into the radio opening, align the holes in the head unit with the holes in the ISO Brackets and mount the unit to the brackets with the screws supplied with the unit. (See Figure A)
  4. Locate the factory wiring harness in the dash. Metra recommends using the proper mating adapter from Metra or AXXESS. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and test the unit for proper operation.
  5. Reassemble dash in reverse order of disassembly. (See Figure B)

Figure A shows the ISO faceplate and brackets being fitted into the dash opening, and the head unit being installed. Figure B shows the reassembled dash.

DIN Head Unit Provision

  1. Slide the DIN cage into the Integrated Mounting Kit and secure by bending the metal locking tabs down. (See Figure A)
  2. Slide the aftermarket head unit into the cage and secure. (See Figure A)
  3. Locate the factory wiring harness in the dash. Metra recommends using the proper mating adapter from Metra or AXXESS. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and test the unit for proper operation.
  4. Reassemble dash in reverse order of disassembly. (See Figure B)

Figure A shows the DIN cage being inserted into the mounting kit and the head unit being installed into the cage. Figure B shows the reassembled dash.

Trunk Provision

  1. Open the trunk, remove four (4) pop-clips from the driver's side trunk liner. Remove liner. (See Figure A)
  2. Locate the factory tuner on the wall of the trunk and disconnect the speaker and antenna plugs. (See Figure B)
  3. Note: It is not necessary to remove the tuner.
  4. Plug the 70-5715 into the unit speaker plug and the antenna extension lead into the unit antenna plug.
  5. Slide the extension harness through the space in the back seat between the seat back and seat bottom.
  6. Unclip the rocker trim, tuck the extension harness under the carpet and stretch the harness to the back of the dash.
  7. Note: Replace the rocker trim when completed.
  8. Splice speaker leads on the extension harness into the rear of the aftermarket head unit.
  9. Plug the factory wiring harnesses into the switch connectors (previously mounted in Step 2) and audio connectors on the back of the integrated mounting kit.

Figure A shows the trunk liner being removed via pop-clips. Figure B illustrates the location of the factory tuner in the trunk, with its speaker and antenna plugs disconnected. It also shows the routing path for the extension harness.
