Parental Control User Guide
1 About parental controls
Parental controls are easy to set up and help limit access to inappropriate apps and prevent children from installing unwanted apps. This guide explains how to quickly set parental controls to make devices kid-safe. Parental controls also provide comprehensive cybersecurity protection to help children avoid malware and other online threats.
2 How to set parental controls upon initial setup
Enable parental controls
To enable parental controls on your device during initial setup:
- Power on your new device.
- Perform the initial setup, including language and network settings, as prompted.
- In 'Turn on Parental controls', tap the toggle to enable it.
- In 'Set password for Parental controls', draw a pattern to set it as a password, and draw it again for confirmation.
- Enter a 4-digit password and tap the checkmark icon [checkmark].
- Enter the 4-digit password again and tap the checkmark icon [checkmark].
- In 'Add email to Parental controls', enter an email address for password reset if you forget your password.
Select apps to apply parental controls
To select apps for parental controls during initial setup:
- In 'Select apps to manage', tap to select the apps you want to apply parental controls to.
- Swipe up or down to select other apps.
- Tap the arrow icon [arrow] to confirm the selection.
3 How to set parental controls in Settings
After initial setup, you can adjust parental control settings in your device's Settings.
Note: This section assumes parental controls have been enabled. If not, navigate to Settings > Additional settings > Parental controls and tap 'Turn on' to enable the feature.
Change password
Your device uses pattern lock, PIN, or alphanumeric passwords. Any of these can be used for parental controls.
Change a pattern
To change a pattern:
- Go to Settings > Additional settings > Parental controls.
- Verify your password for parental controls.
- Tap the settings icon [settings] in the upper right corner.
- Tap 'Change password', then 'Pattern', and draw your desired pattern.
Note: When drawing a pattern, connect at least 4 dots.
Change a PIN
To change a PIN:
- Go to Settings > Additional settings > Parental controls.
- Verify your password for parental controls.
- Tap the settings icon [settings] in the upper right corner.
- Tap 'Change password', then 'PIN', and enter your desired PIN.
Note: The new PIN cannot be the same as the original PIN.
Change an alphanumeric password
To change an alphanumeric password:
- Go to Settings > Additional settings > Parental controls.
- Verify your password for parental controls.
- Tap the settings icon [settings] in the upper right corner.
- Tap 'Change password', then 'Password', and enter your desired alphanumeric password.
Note: The new alphanumeric password must contain 4 to 11 characters.
Add email
To add an email for password reset:
- Go to Settings > Additional settings > Parental controls.
- Verify your password for parental controls.
- Tap the settings icon [settings] in the upper right corner.
- Tap the toggle to enable 'Add email'.
- Enter your email address and a verification code, then tap OK.
Withdrawal of consent
Withdrawing consent to the Privacy Policy of parental controls is considered a refusal of these services. Proceed with caution.
To withdraw consent:
- Go to Settings > Additional settings > Parental controls.
- Verify your password for parental controls.
- Tap the settings icon [settings] in the upper right corner.
- Tap 'Withdrawal of consent'. A dialog box will appear for confirmation.
- After the countdown completes, tap 'Withdraw'.
4 How to operate apps with parental controls enabled
When parental controls are enabled for an app, your child needs to enter the unlock password to open it. To prevent access to unwanted apps, enable parental controls for them.
Open an app
- On the home screen, tap an app with parental controls enabled (e.g., Google Chrome).
- When the app opens, a screen will prompt for the parental control password.
- Verify your password for parental controls.
Install an app
If parental controls are enabled for Xiaomi App Mall or Google Play Store, installing any new app requires a password unlock.
To install an app:
- On the home screen, tap Xiaomi App Mall or Google Play Store.
- When the app opens, a screen will prompt for the parental control password.
- Verify your password for parental controls.
- Find the desired app and tap 'Install'.
Note: If your child opens an internet browser and tries to install an app from it, the parental control password is also required.
Uninstall an app
To uninstall an app with parental controls enabled:
- On the home screen, tap and hold the app you want to uninstall.
- When a shortcut menu appears, tap the uninstall icon [uninstall].
- A dialog box may appear asking for confirmation. Tap 'Uninstall'.
5 How to disable parental controls
Parental controls can be disabled for specific apps or all apps.
Disable parental controls for a specific app
- Go to Settings > Additional settings > Parental controls.
- Verify your password for parental controls.
- Find the app you want to disable under 'Apps' and tap the toggle.
Disable parental controls for all apps
- Go to Settings > Additional settings > Parental controls.
- Verify your password for parental controls.
- Tap the toggle to disable 'Parental controls'. A dialog box will appear for confirmation.
- Tap OK.
