Important Safety Instructions
WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, or injury, follow these basic precautions:
- Read all instructions before using the freezer.
- DANGER or WARNING: Risk of child entrapment. Before discarding an old freezer, remove the doors and leave shelves in place to prevent children from climbing inside. Never allow children to operate, play with, or crawl inside the freezer.
- Never clean freezer parts with flammable fluids, as fumes can create a fire hazard or explosion.
- Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids near this or any other freezer.
Save these instructions.
Installation Instructions
Before Using Your Freezer
- Remove exterior and interior packing.
- Check for all parts: 1 Storage Basket, 1 Divider (CF142 & CF199 only), 1 Instruction Manual, 1 Plastic Scraper.
- Before connecting to power, let the freezer stand upright for approximately 2 hours to reduce the possibility of a cooling system malfunction from handling during transportation.
- Clean the interior surface with lukewarm water and a soft cloth.
Installing Your Freezer
- This appliance is designed for free-standing use only; do not recess or build-in.
- Place on a floor strong enough to support the freezer when fully loaded. Adjust front legs to level the freezer.
- Allow 5 inches of space between the back and sides for proper air circulation.
- Locate away from direct sunlight and heat sources (stove, heater, radiator). Direct sunlight may affect the acrylic coating, and heat sources increase electrical consumption. Extreme cold ambient temperatures may also affect performance.
- Avoid locating in moist areas.
- Plug into an exclusive, properly installed-grounded wall outlet. Do not remove the third (ground) prong. Consult a certified electrician for power and grounding questions.
- After plugging in, allow the unit to cool for 2-3 hours before placing food inside.
Electrical Connection
Warning: Improper use of the grounded plug can result in electrical shock. If the power cord is damaged, have it replaced by an authorized Avanti Products service center.
- This freezer requires a standard 115/120 Volt~60Hz electrical outlet with a three-prong ground.
- The power cord has a three-prong plug that mates with standard three-prong outlets.
- Do not cut or remove the third ground prong.
- Secure the cord behind the freezer and do not leave it exposed or dangling.
- Never unplug by pulling the power cord; grip the plug firmly and pull straight out.
- Do not use an extension cord. Have a qualified electrician install an outlet near the appliance if the cord is too short.
Indicator Lights:
- Green Light (Power Supply): Indicates the freezer is properly connected to electrical power. It glows even if the temperature control is set to "OFF" or the compressor is not running.
- Compressor On Light (Amber): Indicates the compressor is running. It should not run continuously unless the unit is in "Fast Freeze" mode.
Operating Your Freezer
Temperature Control
- The freezer has one control for temperature regulation, located on the lower right-hand corner.
- First-time use: Switch on the Fast Freeze switch (amber light) and run for at least 2 hours before loading food to ensure the cabinet is thoroughly chilled.
- Turn off the Fast Freeze switch after chilling.
- Temperature range is from "1" (warmest) to "6" (coldest). "OFF" stops the cooling cycle but does not shut off power.
- Setting "4" is generally appropriate for home or office use.
- Note: Turning the control to "OFF" stops cooling but not power.
- If the unit is unplugged, loses power, or is turned off, wait 3-5 minutes before restarting to prevent damage.
- Adding large amounts of food will lower cooling efficiency.
- When adjusting the thermostat, change by one numerical increment at a time and allow several hours for stabilization.
The Fast Freeze Switch (Amber)
- The light glows when the switch is ON.
- This switch overrides the thermostat, making the compressor operate continuously to lower cabinet temperature further.
- Use this switch to freeze unfrozen food in appreciable quantities.
- When loading, freeze only three pounds of fresh food per cubic foot of freezer space at one time.
- Distribute packages evenly throughout the freezer.
- No thermostat adjustment is needed when using the Fast Freeze switch.
Defrosting Your Freezer
- When: Defrost when frost is to inch thick for efficient operation and minimum energy consumption. Choose a time when frozen food stock is low.
- How:
- Remove frozen food and place in a cooler.
- Turn thermostat knob to "OFF".
- Unplug the freezer (Green Power Supply light should be off).
- Remove the drain plug on the inside floor of the freezer by pulling straight out.
- Place a shallow pan outside the drain outlet to collect defrost water. Check the pan to prevent overflow.
- Clean the interior.
- Replace the drain plug.
- Reset the thermostat to the desired setting.
- Allow the cabinet to cool for one hour.
- Switch on the Fast Freeze for a minimum of 2 hours.
- Return food to the freezer.
CAUTION: Do not use boiling water or sharp/metallic instruments to remove frost, as this may damage plastic parts or cooling coils and void the warranty. Use the provided plastic scraper.
Helpful Hint: Leaving the door open speeds defrosting. Pouring warm (not boiling) water on ice/frost also helps.
The Freezer Compartment
- Designed for long-term storage of frozen food (up to three months).
- Follow recommended storage times and instructions for commercially frozen foods.
- Place frozen food in the freezer as quickly as possible after purchase.
- The freezer door can break due to excessive ice build-up; defrost when ice reaches to inch thick.
- A storage basket is provided for organizing items. Slide or lift it out to access other packages.
Care And Maintenance
Cleaning Your Freezer
- Clean thoroughly upon installation.
- Turn temperature control to "OFF", unplug the freezer, and remove food and storage basket.
- Wash the inside with a damp cloth and a solution of 2 tablespoons baking soda to 1 quart of water.
- Wash the storage basket with mild detergent solution.
- Keep the door gasket (seal) clean for efficient operation.
- Clean the outside with mild detergent and warm water.
- Dry interior and exterior with a soft cloth.
- Vacuum condenser coils when dusty or dirty.
- Clean the unit each time it is defrosted to keep it odor-free and running efficiently.
Vacation Time
- For short vacations (less than three weeks), leave the freezer operating.
- For long vacations (several months): Remove all food, unplug the power cord, clean and dry the interior thoroughly. Leave the door open slightly (block it open or remove the door) to prevent odor and mold growth. Use extreme caution if children may access the unit.
Moving Your Freezer
- Remove all food.
- Securely tape down all loose items inside.
- Remove rollers to prevent damage.
- Tape the doors shut.
- Ensure the freezer stays upright during transportation.
Energy Saving Tips
- Locate the freezer in the coolest area of the room, away from heat-producing appliances, heating ducts, and direct sunlight.
- Allow hot foods to cool to room temperature before placing them in the freezer. Overloading forces the compressor to run longer, and slow freezing can reduce food quality.
- Wrap foods properly and wipe containers dry before placing them in the freezer to reduce frost build-up.
- Do not line the freezer storage basket with aluminum foil, wax paper, or paper toweling, as liners interfere with cold air circulation and reduce efficiency.
- Organize and label food to minimize door openings and search time. Remove only necessary items at once and close the door promptly.
Troubleshooting Guide
PROBLEM | POSSIBLE CAUSE |
---|---|
Freezer does not operate. | Not plugged in. Circuit breaker tripped or fuse blown. Freezer temperature control set at "0/OFF". |
Compressor turns on and off frequently. | Room temperature is hotter than normal. Large amount of food added. Door opened too often. Door not closed completely. Temperature control not set correctly. Door gasket does not seal properly. Freezer lacks correct clearances. Freezer recently disconnected (allow 4 hours to cool). |
Temperature inside the freezer is too warm. | Temperature control set too warm (adjust to cooler setting). Door kept open too long or too frequently. Door not closed completely. Door gasket does not seal properly. Large amount of warm/hot food stored recently (wait for cooling). Freezer recently disconnected (allow 4 hours to cool). |
Temperature inside the freezer is too cold. | Temperature control set too cold (adjust to warmer setting). Fast Freeze switch is ON (turn off). |
Temperature of external freezer surface is warm. | Exterior walls can be up to 30°F warmer than room temperature; this is normal while the compressor transfers heat. |
Popping or cracking sound when compressor comes on. | Metal parts undergo expansion and contraction; this is normal. |
Bubbling or gurgling sound, like water boiling. | Refrigerant is circulating; this is normal. |
Vibrations. | Check if the freezer is on a level surface. Floor may be uneven or weak. Freezer rocks when moved slightly. Ensure floor adequately supports freezer. Level by shimming. Freezer may be touching the wall (re-level and move from wall). |
Moisture forms on inside freezer walls. | Hot and humid weather increases internal frost build-up; this is normal. |
Moisture forms on outside of freezer. | Door is slightly open, allowing cold air to meet warm, moist outside air. Freezer not level. Gasket is dirty. Storage basket is out of position. |
The door will not close properly. | Door is slightly open. Door kept open too long or too frequently. Door gasket does not seal properly. Freezer not level. Gasket is dirty. Storage basket is out of position. |
