DOD Carcosa Fuzz [PRT]
Controls
The DOD Carcosa Fuzz pedal features the following controls and connections:
- 1. BEFORE: Adjusts the amount of fuzz.
- 2. OUTPUT: Adjusts the overall output level. Provides ample volume, usable as a boost.
- 3. AFTER (Bias Control): Alters the fuzz texture. Counter-clockwise yields "woody" high-fuzz tones, clean with guitar volume knob. Clockwise yields "broken" fuzz tones, vowel-like "horn" sounds, and sustain. Mid-range covers classic familiar to modern "wall of sound" fuzz.
- 4. HI-CUT: Reduces high-frequency detail. Start at 9:00 and adjust counter-clockwise for brighter pickups, clockwise for darker pickups. Experiment with extreme settings, as AFTER control changes also affect fuzz tone. High volume or stage settings may require high-frequency adjustment.
- 5. IN: Connect your instrument here.
- 6. DEMHE/HALI (Toggle Switch):
- DEMHE (Up): Provides a bass and low-mid boost, excellent for clean channels.
- HALI (Down): Provides a bass cut, excellent for dirty channels.
- 7. FOOTSWITCH: Engages/disengages the effect.
- 8. LED: Illuminates when the effect is active.
- 9. OUT: Connect to the next pedal or your amplifier input.
Diagram Descriptions
The pedal features artwork with a skull and yellow/black patterns, with the "CARCOSA FUZZ" logo. The control layout is as follows:
- Control Knobs: Located on the top panel are BEFORE, OUTPUT, AFTER, and HI-CUT.
- Toggle Switch: Positioned between the controls, labeled DEMHE/HALI.
- Footswitch: Centered at the bottom, with an LED indicator above it.
- Input Jack: Labeled "IN" on the right side of the pedal.
- Output Jack: Labeled "OUT" on the left side of the pedal.
Control Range Graphics:
- AFTER (Bias) Control Ranges: A graphic shows the spectrum from "Low Gain Range Reduced Treble Content" (counter-clockwise) to "High Gain Range Increased Treble Content" (clockwise).
- HIGH-CUT Control Ranges: A graphic illustrates "Extreme Range Gated/Sputter 'Horn-Like' Sounds" (counter-clockwise), a "Normal Operating Range" in the center, and "Treble Make-Up Range For Low AFTER (Bias) Settings" and "Extreme Range To Compensate For Extreme Sag/Gate AFTER Settings" (clockwise).
Usage and Tone
The DOD Carcosa Fuzz offers an alternative fuzz universe, blending classic legendary tones with abstract sounds. The combination of its extensive AFTER bias control and two toggle positions creates tones from "pork rind fatness" to "desiccated fragments." This versatility makes the Carcosa Fuzz a good companion for both dirty and clean amplifiers. It features true bypass, ample output, and the "King of Yellow" motif.
The DOD Carcosa Fuzz has an exaggerated mid and treble character, helping it cut through a mix. It is designed to cut through dense, heavy bands while maintaining note articulation with chords. Extreme AFTER bias settings allow for wild, exaggerated sounds.
Amplifier Interaction:
- Clean Amps: DEMHE mode boosts low-mids, pairing well with American combo amps (with bright switch off). It also sounds great with British amps on the edge of breakup, thickening the tone and pushing the amp into saturation.
- Dirty Amps: HALI mode keeps bass tight, and HI-CUT provides high-frequency detail for a lead amp. This makes the Carcosa excellent for a fuzzy lead boost.
Fuzz Voicings: Wide fuzz voicings are possible. Lower AFTER (counter-clockwise) settings respond well to guitar volume and attack dynamics, cleaning up controllably like classic overdrives. Higher AFTER (clockwise) settings make gain and attack less responsive to volume changes, yielding more aggressive fuzz, even synthesized horn-like tones.
HI-CUT Usage: The HI-CUT control rarely needs to go past noon. The rest of the range compensates for attack loss and extreme sag caused by higher AFTER settings.
General Tip: Setting BEFORE and AFTER controls in opposite positions (e.g., BEFORE at 3:00, AFTER at 9:00, or vice-versa) can produce a wide range of controllable tones. Experimentation is encouraged for finding unique sounds.
Placement: Most guitarists/bassists prefer placing the Carcosa at the beginning of their effects chain. A typical chain is: Distortion/Fuzz -> Modulation (Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo) -> Time-based (Delay, Reverb). Placing the Carcosa first preserves its character regardless of subsequent pedals.
