Holmes Cool Mist Humidifier - Model HM1760 Owner's Guide
This guide provides essential safety, operating, maintenance, and troubleshooting information for your Holmes Cool Mist Humidifier.
Important Safety Instructions
Always follow basic safety precautions when using electrical appliances to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and injury. Read all instructions before use.
- Plug directly into a 120V AC electrical outlet.
- Keep the cord away from traffic areas and heat sources.
- Do not place near heat sources like stoves or radiators.
- Keep out of reach of children. Do not use in closed rooms where children sleep or play.
- Always unplug the unit before refilling or servicing.
- Never place objects over the moisture outlet or insert objects into openings.
- Do not operate with a damaged cord or plug. Return for examination or repair.
- Use only for intended household use.
- Do not use outdoors.
- Place on a firm, flat, level, moisture-resistant surface. Use a waterproof mat if necessary.
- Do not aim the moisture outlet directly at walls.
- Unplug when not in use.
- Never tilt, move, or empty while operating. Shut off and unplug first.
- Perform daily and weekly maintenance. Use only recommended cleaners.
- Never use detergents, gasoline, glass cleaner, furniture polish, paint thinner, or other household solvents.
- If excessive humidity causes condensation, turn the unit OFF.
- Do not use if humidity exceeds 50%. Use a hygrometer to measure.
- Do not attempt to repair or adjust electrical or mechanical functions; this voids the warranty.
- Never place housing under water flow or immerse in liquids.
- Do not plug in with wet hands.
- Do not pour water into openings other than the water tank.
- Do not place under overhanging surfaces.
- Never operate without water in the tank.
- Do not move until the unit cools completely after use.
- Use both hands when carrying a full water tank.
Polarized Plug: This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade wider than the other) to reduce electric shock risk. It fits only one way in a polarized outlet. If it doesn't fit, reverse the plug or contact a qualified electrician. Do not modify the plug.
Consumer Safety Notes: This is an electrical appliance requiring attention. If moisture forms on walls/windows, turn off the humidifier as the room may already have sufficient humidity. Do not block air inlet or outlet.
How the Cool Mist Humidifier Works
The Holmes Cool Mist Humidifier draws dry air through the rear intake grill. This air passes through a moisture-laden wick filter, which captures minerals and deposits from the water. The moistened air is then directed back into the room through the top air grill.
Note: This system produces cool, invisible moisture. It is normal not to see the mist. A humidity level below 20% can be unhealthy; the recommended level is 40%-50%.
Features and Operation
Key Components (Refer to Figure 1):
- A: Humidifier Tank
- B: Humidifier Housing
- C: Control Knob
- D: Humidifier Base
- E: Tank Handle
- F: FilterCheck® Indicator
- G: Extended Run Switch
Pre-Operating Instructions:
- Ensure the humidifier is switched OFF.

Operating Instructions:
- Remove the tank and main housing.
- Ensure the wick filter is in place.
- Fill the tank with cool, fresh tap water. Do not use warm water. Firmly replace the tank cap. The tank holds 1 gallon of water.
- Replace the top housing and tank. The tank will begin to empty into the base.
- Plug the humidifier into a 120V electrical outlet.
- Turn the unit ON by setting the control knob to High (II) for maximum moisture or Low (I) for longer run time and quieter operation.
- Turn the unit OFF by setting the knob to Off (O).
Extended Run Time Setting: Slide the switch on the water tray to the right for extended run time; slide it back to the left for maximum output.
Replacing the Filters
Waterborne minerals and sediment accumulate in the wick filter during normal use. The frequency of replacement depends on water hardness.
The FilterCheck® Indicator (F) monitors filter life. When the unit is off, the indicator is in the OFF position. After 60 minutes of use, it moves to show filter condition. A new filter reads in the "GOOD" (purple) section. With frequent use, the indicator will show when replacement is needed (see Figure 2). When the needle is in the "CHANGE" (black) section, the filter is clogged with minerals, reducing moisture output. Replace the filter to maintain performance.
Filter Replacement Steps:
- Turn off and unplug the unit.
- Remove the tank and housing to access the base tray.
- Remove and discard the old wick filter.
- Follow weekly cleaning instructions.
- Insert a new filter.
- Repeat operating instructions.
It takes approximately 30 minutes for the humidifier to reach maximum output after filter replacement.
Replacement filters (Model HWF62) can be purchased from local retailers, by calling 1-800-546-5637, or by visiting www.holmesproducts.com.
