WatchGas SST1 Single Gas Detector User Manual
Introduction
The WatchGas SST1 is a portable, single-gas detector designed for personal safety. It is a disposable device, operating for either 2 or 3 years (Oxygen models operate for 2 years only). The SST1 is designed as a maintenance-free unit, eliminating the need to replace sensors, batteries, or other key components. It detects the presence of specific gases: H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide), CO (Carbon Monoxide), SO2 (Sulfur Dioxide), and O2 (Oxygen) deficiency. The device provides low and high alarm indications to alert users to gas presence, including STEL (Short Term Exposure Limit) and TWA (Time Weighted Average) readings in real-time mode.
The SST1 is designed for ease of use, featuring one-button operation and NFC (Near Field Communication) for simple configuration and full compliance. Its rugged design is built to withstand tough industrial environments, protecting users against hazardous gas exposure.
Important Safety Information
WARNING:
- Do not attempt to replace internal components. This action will void the intrinsic safety rating and the product warranty. Replacements must use original WatchGas parts.
- Periodically test the sensor's response by exposing the detector to a target gas concentration that exceeds the alarm setpoint. Manually verify that the audible, vibration, and visual alarms are activated.
- Ensure the monitor is switched on, and the sensor and audible port are clean before use.
CAUTION/SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
- All inspections should be performed in a clean and hazard-free environment.
- The detector can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth using a neutral cleaner (e.g., ACL Staticide).
- NOTE: Do not use solvents, soaps, or polishes.
- Bump test the sensor's response by exposing the detector to a target gas concentration that exceeds the alarm setpoint. Manually verify that the audible, vibration, and visual alarms are activated.
General Safety Notes:
- This product is a gas detector, not a measuring device.
- For optimal performance, periodically zero the sensor in a normal atmosphere (20.9% v/v O2) that is free of hazardous gas.
- Activate the detector before the activation date indicated on the box or inspect battery capacity.
- The equipment is intended for use in hazardous atmospheres in air with normal oxygen content not exceeding 21% v/v.
- The end-user must contact the equipment manufacturer if the antistatic film on the LCD display is damaged.
- Toxic gas sensors (CO, H2S, SO2) do not require calibration for the life of the product; however, bump testing is recommended.
- Perform a Bump Test if the detector has been subjected to physical impact, liquid immersion, an Over Limit alarm event, custody changes, or anytime the detector's performance is in doubt.
- Bump Test by exposing the detector to a known concentration of target gas that exceeds the low alarm setpoints. The Bump Test must be performed manually in a clean air environment.
- If a unit fails a Bump Test, calibrate the detector. If the unit fails calibration, discontinue use (the device locks after 10 failed calibrations).
- The accuracy of the SST1 depends on the quality of target gases.
- The SST1 contains a lithium battery that must be disposed of correctly according to local country requirements.
- Do not attempt to replace the battery or sensor; this product is designed to be disposable. Changing these components will void the warranty.
- If you suspect any malfunction or encounter technical problems, contact WatchGas or a local verified partner.
Device Overview
The SST1 is a portable, single-gas device. It is disposable and operates for 2 or 3 years (O2 models are 2-year only). Designed as maintenance-free, there is no need to replace sensors, batteries, or other key components. The SST1 detects the presence of specific gases: H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide), CO (Carbon Monoxide), SO2 (Sulfur Dioxide), and O2 (Oxygen) deficiency. It provides low and high alarm indications to alert users to gas presence, including STEL and TWA readings in real-time mode.

Self-Test Procedure
Prior to daily use, the user must perform a self-test to ensure the device is safe for operation.
- STEP 1: When a self-test is required, the gas icon will flash at the bottom of the screen.
- STEP 2: Press and hold the button for more than 3 seconds. The unit will give a single beep indication (NFC on). Continue holding the button until a double beep is heard, then release.
After releasing the button, the following operations occur: the right and left side LEDs light up (accompanied by an audible beep and vibration), all LCD display icons appear, and the sensor is diagnosed. The self-test is then completed. The duration of the self-test can be adjusted in the WatchGas App.
Event Log
The SST1 stores the last 100 alarm events using a First-In, First-Out (FIFO) system. The 101st event will overwrite the first event. This stored information can be downloaded and reviewed using the WatchGas App. The stored information includes:
- The detector serial number
- Number of events
- Time elapsed since the gas alarm occurred
- Duration of the alarm
- Type of alarms (Low, High, TWA, or STEL)
- Compliance status
- Calibration / Bump test results
Bump Test
Bump Test intervals can be configured using the WatchGas App. If the bump test toggle is switched off in the app, the detector will not display the bump-test request. If the detector is due for a bump test, the "BUMP" icon will be visible on the bottom left of the screen. The bump test can be performed manually using bump gas and the WatchGas App, or by using the SST-DOCK.
