1. Prepare the door and check dimensions
If drilling a new door, use the supplied template and the complete door drilling instructions available at www.kwikset.com/doorprep.
- A: Measure to confirm that the hole in the door is 2-1/8" (54 mm).
- B: Measure to confirm that the backset is either 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60 or 70 mm).
- C: Measure to confirm that the hole in the door edge is 1" (25 mm).
- D: Measure to confirm that the door is either 1-3/8" or 1-3/4" (35 mm or 45 mm) thick.
2. Install the latch and strike
- A: Hold the latch in front of the door hole, with the latch face flush against the door edge.
- B: Check if the door edge is chiseled. If the slotted hole is centered, no adjustment is required. If not centered, use a flathead screwdriver to lift tabs on the collar of the rectangular face to remove it, then install the drive-in collar, aligning tabs with holes and ensuring the slotted hole is at the bottom. Pull the collar to test for a tight fit. Rotate the latch face 180° as shown to extend the latch, making sure the slotted hole is at the bottom. Install the latch in the door with supplied screws (H x2), using a wood block and hammer if necessary.
- C: Install the strike on the door frame. Ensure the hole in the door frame is drilled a minimum of 1" (25 mm) deep. Use screws (H x2).
3. Install exterior assembly
- A: Route the cable below the latch.
- B: IMPORTANT: Hold the exterior assembly on the outside firmly (or have a second pair of hands) for the next steps.
- C: Push the cable through the bottom hole.
- D: Secure the mounting plate with the supplied screws (K x2 for 1-3/4" thick doors, L x2 for 1-3/8" thick doors). Keep the mounting plate parallel to the door edge.
4. Install interior assembly
- A: Insert the tailpiece into the slot of the latch.
- B: Align the colored edges of the connectors and ensure a tight cable connection. Match the red color on both pieces to avoid damaging the connector.
- C: Install the interior assembly, aligning the slot to the tailpiece.
- D: Test the turnpiece rotation. It may feel heavy, which is by design.
- E: Secure the interior assembly with the supplied screws (J x3).
- F: Load 4 AA batteries into the interior assembly. For best results, use new, non-rechargeable alkaline batteries only. Ensure correct polarity.
5. Set Locking and Unlocking Direction
Determine the location of the latch (left or right of the keypad).
- Left-Locking Latch: If the bolt goes left when locking.
- Right-Locking Latch: If the bolt goes right when locking.
Follow the corresponding steps (A, B, C, D) for setting the direction. This involves pressing the PROG button, entering codes, and pressing PROG again. If the direction is incorrect, repeat the process.

Hold the 9-Volt in place while entering your user code to unlock the door. Continue holding the 9-Volt in position until the door unlocks.
- A: Remove the terminal cover.
- B: Hold the battery to the terminals. You will hear beeping to signal you can open the door. Press the battery firmly against the terminals; it will beep 3 times. Keep holding the battery firmly and enter your User Code and press the lock button to unlock.
- C: Replace the terminal cover.
Note: If you remove the battery before the door unlocks, you will need to re-enter your user code.
