Installation Instructions
- Disassemble the bumper and permanently remove the aluminum buffer beam and its supports. Remove the heat shield on the left side and the plastic protection on the right side at the bottom of the vehicle.
- Drill a hole of Ø 40.5mm in the underside of both chassis beams. Treat the drilled holes with a rust-preventing agent. (Refer to Photo 1 for location and dimensions).
- Slide the tow bar into the chassis beams at the rear of the vehicle, aligning points (A) on the right and (B) on the left with the pre-drilled threaded holes. Insert bolts and washers without tightening.
Note: Vehicles up to model year 2002 use 3 bolts; vehicles from model year 2003 use 2 bolts.
- At points (C), insert the mounting pieces (1) on the right and (2) on the left into the underside of the chassis beams through the drilled holes. Insert bolts without tightening. Drill three holes (points D) through the chassis for mounting pieces (1) and (2) using a Ø 6.5mm drill bit. Secure these to the chassis using the supplied blind rivets and then tighten all bolts firmly according to the torque specifications.
- Re-assemble the heat shield and the plastic protection to the underside of the vehicle.
- Make an incision in the underside of the bumper according to the provided drawing and re-attach the bumper to the vehicle.
- Assemble the detachable system T30 with the socket plate holder and tighten firmly according to torque specifications.
Important Notes:
- For vehicles up to model year 2002, obtain a declaration of no objection from your Audi dealer.
- Consult your Audi dealer or owner's manual for the maximum permissible towing mass.
- Remove any bitumen coating from the tow bar mounting points.
- Be careful when drilling to avoid damaging brake lines, electrical wiring, or fuel lines.
- If the tow bar ball covers the license plate or fog light when not in use, it must be removed.
Bumper Cut-out Diagram
The hatched area in the diagram indicates the section of the bumper that needs to be cut away. Key:
- "B" = The bumper
- "O" = The lower rim of the bumper
- "M" = The middle of the bumper
Dimensions for the cut-out are approximately 180mm wide and 118mm high, centered around the tow bar access point.
P08 Component Installation (Detachable System)
- Screw the spring press bolt M10 into the welded nut of the socket plate as shown in Figure 1. Ensure only the small ball protrudes from the plate.
- Mount the socket plate using bolt M12x30. Place a nylon washer between the socket plate and the pedestal, and another between the socket plate and the security nut M12 (Figure 2). Screw in the security nut, ensuring the socket plate can still be moved.
- Adjust the spring press bolts until the bolt is almost against the mounting support. Figures 3 and 4 show the socket plate in its 'stowed' and 'in-use' positions. Handle with care when changing positions.
General Recommendations & Warranty
- Before installation, check the tow bar for transport damage and verify the correct reference number for the vehicle.
- Follow all installation instructions precisely.
- Present the tow bar under the vehicle before drilling to ensure correct alignment.
- If the vehicle has non-standard bumpers (special series, sport versions, tuning parts), consult GDW technical service before proceeding.
- Do not exceed the indicated maximum towing weight, "D", and "S" values.
- The tow bar must be checked after the first 1000 km of use and at least once a year. Check all bolt connections and retighten if necessary. Repair any paint damage. Replace any damaged components. Keep parts of the detachable tow bar system well greased.
- Ensure the clearance specified in appendix VII, diagram 30 of guideline 94/20/EG is maintained.
