Inspection and Verification Points
Safety depends on equipment integrity. Petzl recommends detailed inspection by a competent person at least every 12 months (frequency may vary based on usage intensity, regulations, and conditions).
Before each use:
- Verify absence of deformation, cracks, marks, wear, or corrosion on frame, rivet, gate, and locking sleeve.
- Check that the gate opens smoothly and closes automatically and completely.
- Ensure the Keylock hole is clear.
- Verify the locking sleeve locks and unlocks correctly.
During use:
- Ensure the carabiner is always loaded on its major axis.
- Regularly check that the locking sleeve is locked.
- Avoid pressure or rubbing that could unlock the gate or damage the sleeve.
- WARNING: The TWIST-LOCK mechanism can unlock due to rubbing (e.g., from a rope).
- Monitor product condition and connections to other system equipment.
- Ensure all equipment items are correctly positioned.
- The carabiner must be connected to a closed attachment point.

Opening/Closing Mechanisms
SCREW-LOCK (SL): Manual locking. Risk of gate opening when red indicator is visible. Use if frequent opening/closing is not needed.
BALL-LOCK (BL): Automatic locking. Check for complete lock each time.
TRIACT-LOCK (TL): Automatic locking with a secondary safety lock. Check for complete lock each time.
TWIST-LOCK (RL): Automatic locking. Can unlock due to rubbing.
Compatibility
Ensure compatibility with other safety system equipment. Associated equipment must meet country-specific standards (e.g., EN 354 lanyards).
Carabiner Positioning
Carabiners are strongest when loaded on the major axis with the gate closed. Loading on the minor axis or with the gate open is dangerous and reduces strength.
Additional Information
- In fall-arrest systems, connector length affects fall distance.
- Have a rescue plan and means for rapid implementation.
- Anchor points should be above the user and meet EN 795 (min. 12 kN).
- Ensure sufficient clearance below the user to avoid ground impact during a fall.
- Ensure anchor point is correctly positioned to limit fall risk and length.
- A fall-arrest harness is the only allowable body support in a fall-arrest system.
- Be aware of potential dangers when using multiple pieces of equipment.
- WARNING - DANGER: Protect products from abrasive or sharp surfaces.
- Users must be medically fit for activities at height.
- Inert suspension in a harness can cause serious injury or death.
- Follow Instructions for Use for all associated equipment.
- Instructions must be provided in the user's country's language.
- Keep Instructions for Use for future reference.
- Ensure product markings are legible.
Product Retirement
WARNING: Exceptional events may require retiring a product after a single use.
Retire a product if:
- Lifespan exceeded.
- Subjected to a major fall or load.
- Fails inspection or reliability is doubted.
- Usage history is unknown or markings are illegible.
- Product becomes obsolete (legislation, standards, technique changes, incompatibility).
Destroy retired products to prevent further use.
