Victron Energy System Schematic

This document outlines a comprehensive Victron Energy system, detailing the interconnection of various components for efficient power management. The system integrates advanced battery management, solar charging, and inverter capabilities.

System Overview

The core of the system comprises Victron Energy's MultiPlus-II inverter/charger, Lynx Smart BMS, and Cerbo GX control unit, supported by SmartSolar MPPT charge controllers and Orion-Tr Smart DC/DC chargers. The system utilizes Victron's Smart LiFePO4 batteries for energy storage.

Key Components and Connections

Cerbo GX & GX Touch 50: Central control and monitoring unit, facilitating digital communication with other Victron devices. Connects via VE.Bus, VE.Direct, and Ethernet.
MultiPlus-II Inverter/Charger: Provides AC power from DC sources, with power assist capabilities up to 3kW. Features AC IN and AC OUT connections, with AC OUT-1 and AC OUT-2 supporting up to 50A each. Requires appropriate AC input protection (max 50A breaker).
Lynx Smart BMS: Manages and protects the lithium batteries, controlling charging and discharging processes. Features connections for battery positive and negative, VE.Can, and auxiliary functions like ATC and relay control.
SmartSolar MPPT Charge Controller (e.g., 100/50): Optimizes solar power harvesting, connecting to the solar array (PV) and the battery bank.
Orion-Tr Smart DC/DC Chargers: Non-isolated chargers that convert DC power, connecting to the alternator and battery systems. Features include input voltage range (8-17V) and output power (360W/30A).
Smart LiFePO4 Batteries (12.8V-300Ah): High-capacity lithium batteries serving as the primary energy storage.
Smart Battery Protect 220: Protects DC loads by disconnecting them when battery voltage drops too low.
Ancillary Components: Includes thermal circuit breakers, main fuses, busbars (positive and negative), starter motor, alternator, and various wiring connections for system integrity.

Power Flow and Control

The system is designed for intelligent power management. The Cerbo GX unit orchestrates the operation of the MultiPlus-II, SmartSolar chargers, and Orion-Tr chargers via digital communication (DVCC feature) and direct control wires (ATC for Orion-Tr). DC loads are managed by the Smart Battery Protect 220, while AC loads are controlled in conjunction with the MultiPlus-II.

Important Notes:

SmartBatteryProtect requires programming for Li-Ion mode and 12V.
The primary case ground connection for the inverter/charger must be connected to the central negative busbar.
AC output connections (AC OUT-1, AC OUT-2) require earth leakage protection devices (MCB/RCD).
When operating in inverter mode, the neutral output of the inverter/charger must be connected to ground for GFCI/RCD functionality.
All battery cables (positive and negative) should be kept as short as possible and of equal length.
Ensure proper ventilation during battery charging and avoid open flames or sparks.

Safety and Installation Recommendations

AC Voltage Warning: 120V AC is hazardous. Do not touch live parts. Consult a Victron dealer if unsure.
Cable Sizing: Recommended DC cable sizes for MultiPlus-II vary based on cable length (e.g., 0-5m: 4x50SQmm, 5-10m: 4x70SQmm). AC input and output cables should be sized appropriately for the connected breakers.
Fusing: Main battery fuses should be rated appropriately (e.g., 400A for MultiPlus-II). Thermal circuit breakers are used for load protection.
Shore/Generator Power: The system accommodates shore power and generator input, with necessary breakers and isolation transformers recommended.
