IKEA Worktop: Melamine Laminate
Information on the material, installation, and care of IKEA melamine laminate worktops.
About the Material
The worktop is constructed from melamine laminate pressed onto particleboard. This laminate is created by combining melamine-resin-impregnated paper and applying heat and pressure. The result is a hardened surface that provides a permanent and durable plastic finish, ideal for surfaces subjected to daily wear and tear.
Alterations to the worktop are not recommended. However, cutting may be necessary for installation, and edge covering is typically provided with the product. If edge covering is not included, modifications are strongly advised against.
Advice for Use
Before Installation
- Store the worktop in a room with normal temperature and humidity levels before installation.
- Avoid placing the worktop near a warm radiator or on a cold floor.
- When storing, stand the worktop on the back edge of its long side.
- Keep the plastic packaging on until you are ready to install the worktop.
- Supporting legs are required if the overhang exceeds 25 cm. The maximum distance between these legs should not exceed 80 cm.
- Worktops installed above dishwashers, washing machines, or ovens should be protected underneath with a FENSJÖ or FIXA diffusion barrier.
- The worktop is not suitable for use in wet rooms.
- It is recommended for indoor use only.
Care and Maintenance
- For daily cleaning, use ordinary washing-up detergent, soap, or water. Avoid using chemicals for cleaning.
- If spills occur, wipe them immediately with a soft cloth dampened in water and a mild washing-up detergent or soap.
- Do not use products containing abrasives, ammonia, or bleach. Dry with a dry, clean cloth.
- Avoid placing hot objects directly on the worktop. Always use a pot stand to protect the surface.
- Always use a chopping board and never cut directly on the worktop with a knife.
- Never drag objects with rough or ragged edges across the worktop, as this can cause scratches.
- Do not place appliances like toasters, coffee makers, or kettles that emit heat directly over a seam between two worktops, as heat can damage the seam.
- Never use steel wool, scourer pads, or similar products, as they can scratch the surface.
For Matt Black Surfaces Only
- Marks and small scratches can be removed using a melamine sponge.
