  4. Follow the instructions in the appropriate chapter below for your operating system: IV. Linux, V. Mac, VI. Windows.
  5. After the drivers are installed, carefully insert your Ethernet cable into the Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

IV. Linux

IV-1. Requirements

To build the driver, Linux kernel sources must be installed on the build machine. The running kernel version must match the installed kernel sources. Kernel sources can be obtained from www.kernel.org or your Linux distributor.

Ensure that the kernel is built with Host-side, EHCI, OHCI or UHCI support.

IV-2. File Description

File Description
ax88179_178a.c AX88179_178A Main Linux driver
axix.h AX88179_178A Linux driver header
Makefile AX88179_178A driver make

IV-3. Conditional Compilation Flags

IV-3-1. Getting Started

  1. Extract the compressed driver source file to your template directory using the command:
    [root@localhost template]# tar -xf DRIVER_SOURCE_PACKAGE.tar.bz2
  2. The driver source files will be extracted to the current directory. Compile the driver using the command:
    [root@localhost template]# make
  3. If compilation is successful, ax88179_178a.ko will be created in the current directory.
  4. To install the driver using modprobe, execute the following command:
    [root@localhost template]# make install

IV-3-2. Usage

  1. To load the driver manually, navigate to the driver directory and execute the following commands:
    [root@localhost template]# modprobe usbnet
    [root@localhost template]# insmod ax88179_178a.ko
  2. To unload the driver, execute the command:
    [root@localhost anywhere]# rmmod axax88179_178a

IV-3-3. Driver Parameters

The following parameters can be set when using insmod:

  • Msg_enable=0xNNNNNNN: Specifies the msg_enable of usbnet.
  • bszie=xx: Specifies the Rx Bulk In Queue size (KB). If bszie is between 1 and 5, it's fixed at 5KB. If bszie is over 24, it's fixed at 24KB. If bszie is zero, the Bulk In Queue function is disabled.

Example:

Insmod ax88179_178.ko msg_enable=0x00000000 bszie=xx

V. Mac OS

V-1. Driver Installation

Drivers downloaded from the Edimax website may be in .zip file format. Please unzip/extract the file before continuing.

  1. Double-click the .dmg file included in the downloaded file, and then navigate to the disk image mounted to your Mac.
  2. Double-click the .pkg file to open the driver installation wizard.
  3. Click "Continue" to proceed to the next step. The installation wizard will guide you through the process.
  4. Click "Install" to continue the installation. You may be prompted for your username and password.
  5. After installation is complete, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Click "Continue Installation" to proceed.
  6. When the installation is complete, click "Restart" to restart your system.

V-2. Driver Uninstallation

  1. Double-click the .dmg file included in the download file, and then navigate to the disk image mounted to your Mac.
  2. Double-click the "Uninstall" file.
  3. You may need to enter your system/administrative password and press Enter to complete the uninstallation.

V-3. Troubleshooting – OS X 10.8 Installation Issue

For Mac OS X 10.8 users, new security features may prevent driver installation. By default, OS X 10.8 prevents installation or launching of applications not downloaded from the Mac App Store or not digitally signed by developers.

If your drivers are not digitally signed, you may see an error message like: "[filename]" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers.

To override this function and continue with driver installation:

  1. Control-click (hold down the Control button on your keyboard and then click) the .pkg file and select "Open" from the menu.
  2. You will be prompted that the installer is from an unidentified developer and asked to confirm if you wish to open it. Please click "Open" to continue.
  3. The installer will open and function normally as described in V-1. Driver Installation.

VI. Windows

  1. Open the correct folder for your version of Windows.
  2. On the following screen, open the folder named "Win7_v1.x.8.0_...".
  3. Locate and double-click the "Setup.exe" icon to start the driver installation wizard.
  4. Please wait while the setup wizard prepares to install the drivers.
  5. When the installation is complete, click "Finish".
