NESPRESSO PROFESSIONAL RECYCLING PROGRAM
WORKING TOWARDS A BRIGHT FUTURE
Nespresso is committed to sustainability and has been certified as a B Corp™, joining a community of brands that use business as a Force for Good™. This certification signifies high standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability.
The Nespresso Professional Recycling Program is designed to make recycling convenient, ensuring that aluminum from Nespresso capsules is collected and recycled into new objects, contributing to a circular economy. This initiative helps conserve resources and reduces waste sent to landfills.
WHEN IT COMES TO SUSTAINABILITY, DOING IS EVERYTHING
Nespresso is taking action in three main areas:
- Supporting Coffee Communities: Committed to creating a lasting impact with coffee-growing communities, protecting natural ecosystems, and supporting farmers' livelihoods.
- Regenerating Land: Using the power of coffee to regenerate land, restore healthy ecosystems, and assist coffee-growing communities in building resilience against climate change.
- Convenient Recycling: Making recycling more convenient to increase the collection and recycling of aluminum from Nespresso capsules.
These actions not only benefit the environment but also ensure the sourcing, blending, roasting, and delivery of high-quality coffees.
AT NESPRESSO, RECYCLING REALLY WORKS.
Recycling works for the planet by creating a more circular economy, conserving resources, and reducing landfill waste. It also works for businesses, as consumers increasingly prefer environmentally friendly products and companies with sustainable practices.
Recycling works for your business:
- 88% of consumers want companies to help them be more environmental and ethical.
- 72% of respondents are buying more environmentally friendly products than five years ago.
- 69% of job seekers are more likely to accept a job from an environmentally sustainable organization.
LIFE OF A NESPRESSO COFFEE CAPSULE
The lifecycle of a Nespresso capsule involves several stages:
- Capsule Production: High-quality aluminum is used for its protective properties and recyclability.
- At Your Business: Nespresso Professional machines are energy-efficient and designed with sustainability in mind, using precise amounts of coffee, water, and energy per cup.
- At the Recycling Plant: Capsules are sorted, aluminum is separated from coffee grounds, and both are processed for reuse.
- Second Life: Recycled aluminum is used to create new products, including new Nespresso capsules (Original Line capsules now use 80% recycled aluminum). Used coffee grounds are transformed into nutrient-rich compost and topsoil.
WHY ALUMINUM?
Aluminum is chosen for its ability to protect the delicate flavors and aromas of Nespresso coffees. It acts as a barrier to light, oxygen, moisture, and bacteria. Importantly, aluminum is fully recyclable, retaining its properties when melted and allowing for repeated reuse.
A VERSATILE MATERIAL
- Aluminum protects coffee, providing a complete barrier to light, oxygen, moisture, and bacteria.
- Aluminum is plentiful, being the second most abundant metallic element in the Earth's crust.
- Recycling aluminum decreases the energy needed to extract aluminum from ore by 95%.
A RESPONSIBLE CHOICE
Nespresso is committed to ensuring its aluminum is fully traceable and responsibly sourced. The company is a partner of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), which sets global standards for responsible aluminum sourcing, production, and usage, addressing challenges in the sector and creating positive impacts on communities, biodiversity, and climate.
THE PRECISION OF SINGLE-SERVE
Each capsule is made from aluminum, filled with carefully selected coffees, and hermetically sealed. This single-serve format ensures the precise amount of coffee, water, and energy is used for each cup, minimizing waste.
AT YOUR BUSINESS
Choosing Nespresso coffee means making a statement about your commitment to sustainability. Nespresso Professional machines are energy-efficient, featuring quick heating, sleep modes, and automatic shut-off functions. They are designed with reduced weight, volume, and energy consumption, incorporating recycled plastic where possible. The single-serve capsules use only the necessary amount of coffee, water, and electricity, and both the capsules and coffee are fully recyclable through the Nespresso Recycling Program.
