The SKÄRANDE is a knife sharpener designed by Håkan Olsson for IKEA. It is designed to keep knives in excellent condition through regular sharpening.
How to Use
Follow these steps to sharpen your knives:
Step 1: Preparation
The knife sharpener is shown with three distinct slots labeled 1, 2, and 3, representing coarse, medium, and fine sharpening stages respectively.
Step 2: Add Water
Water is being poured into the container of the knife sharpener from a faucet.
Step 3: First Sharpening Pass
A knife is shown being inserted into the first slot (slot 1) of the sharpener.
Step 4: Sharpening Motion
A hand is shown holding the knife and gently pulling it back and forth within the sharpening slot (referencing step 1).
Step 5: Completing the Sharpening
The knife is shown being moved through the slots, with callouts indicating the sequence of using slots 2 and 3.
Important: The container must be filled with water during all times when the knife sharpener is in use. Water cools the knife blade and ensures smooth operation.

When to Sharpen
For ordinary household use, it is recommended to sharpen knives at regular intervals, ideally once a week. If a knife becomes very blunt due to prolonged use or damage, professional sharpening might be necessary to restore its edge.

- It features three different slots for sharpening:
- Slot 1: Coarse sharpening
- Slot 2: Medium sharpening
- Slot 3: Fine sharpening (for maintaining an already sharp edge)
- For a blunt knife, it is recommended to use all three steps sequentially. For maintaining an edge, use only slot 3.
Sharpening Process Details
Pull the knife through each slot approximately 15-20 times. The exact number of strokes required will depend on the material and condition of the knife.
If the knife is still not sharp enough after completing all steps, start over with the first slot and repeat all three steps.
Cleaning and Maintenance
- Clean the sharpener by running it under cold water.
- Ensure the knife is clean before use after sharpening.
