Controls Overview
The VMX Series mixers feature a variety of controls for shaping your sound and managing audio sources.
Channel Controls
PHONO/LINE Switch
Selects the channel's audio source (Phono or Line input).
GAIN Knob
Adjusts the input signal level for the channel. If the red 'CLIP' LED illuminates, lower the GAIN to prevent distortion.
EQ Knobs (High, Mid, Low)
Adjusts the high, mid, and low frequencies of the channel. Typically offers attenuation (-32 dB) and boost (up to +12 dB).
CHANNEL Fader
Controls the volume level of the channel. The CURVE switch determines how abruptly the volume changes.
CURVE Switch
Determines the slope or curve of the crossfader action for the channel.
Master and Output Controls
LEVEL METER
Displays the MAIN OUT signal level. The MAIN/PFL button selects which signal is displayed.
MAIN OUT (LEVEL) Knob
Adjusts the overall volume of the main outputs. For VMX300/VMX1000, OUT A and OUT B control AMP and BOOTH/MAIN 2 outputs respectively. BAL A adjusts stereo balance for OUT A.
TALK Knob
Reduces music volume when speaking into the microphone, allowing voice to be heard clearly. Press the TALK (ON) button to engage.
PFL MIX Knob
Fades between channels 1 & 2 (VMX100/VMX200) or between PFL and MAIN signal (VMX300/VMX1000). If MODE switch is SPLIT, signals are heard separately in left/right headphones.
PFL LEVEL Knob
Adjusts the headphone mix volume for pre-fader listening. Press the PFL button on individual channels to monitor them.
Specialty Controls
(XPQ) SURROUND Knob
Adjusts the amount of stereo enhancement. Press the adjacent button to activate the effect.
BEAT COUNTER
Assists in syncing audio sources for smooth crossfades. Refer to Getting Started step 7 for details.
CROSSFADER
Blends between audio sources. The CROSSFADER CURVE knob adjusts the fade slope.
TEMPO DIFFERENCE & TIME OFFSET LEDs
(VMX100/VMX200/VMX300) Indicate tempo difference and beat synchronization between audio sources. The meter lights towards the faster source, and green LEDs indicate matching tempos or synchronized audio.
SYNC LOCK Button
Locks the tempo of an audio source to prevent rapid jumps. Press again to exit.
BEAT ASSIST Button
Allows manual tempo entry (tap tempo) by pressing in rhythm with the music.
REVERSE HOLD/TAP Switch
Inverts crossfader direction. Momentary press engages effect until released; holding up locks the effect.
KILL HOLD/TAP Switches
(VMX300 only) Attenuate high, mid, and low frequencies by 32 dB. Momentary press engages effect until released; holding up locks the effect.
MIC AUX Knobs
Adjust the signal level for each microphone at the MIC AUX SEND jack.
MIC INPUT Knobs
Adjust EQ and volume for microphone inputs. The ON button enables/disables the microphone.
EQ BYPASS Button
Deactivates the EQ knobs for the channel.
POWER Switch
Turns the mixer on and off. Located on the rear panel for VMX100/VMX200/VMX300 models.
SENS Knob
Adjusts microphone signal sensitivity to engage the TALK function.
DPT Knob
Controls the music volume reduction when the TALK function is active.
ASSIGN Knobs (A & B)
Select the audio source for each side of the CROSSFADER.
FX RET Knob
Adjusts the amount of signal from MIC AUX RETURN jacks included in the main mix.
Getting Started
- Make all power, audio, USB, and speaker connections to the mixer. Ensure all devices are powered OFF before connecting.
- With the MAIN OUT knob(s) turned all the way down, turn your mixer ON.
- Turn ON your audio sources and begin playing audio into the mixer.
- Raise the MAIN OUT and PFL/PHONES knobs to your desired listening level.
- For each channel receiving a signal, raise the GAIN knob. If the red 'CLIP' LED on the channel meter lights up, lower the GAIN. If you hear audio distortion on VMX100/VMX200, lower the GAIN.
- Adjust the relative level of audio sources by raising each CHANNEL fader.
- The tempos (BPM) of selected audio sources will appear on the Beat Counter display. Press the SYNC LOCK button to maintain a stable tempo. Alternatively, use the BEAT ASSIST button to manually set the tempo ('tap tempo').
- Once tempos are locked, the TEMPO DIFFERENCE LEDs indicate if tempos match. The meter shows which source is faster; green LEDs indicate matching tempos.
- Even with matching tempos, beats may not be perfectly synced. The TIME OFFSET LEDs indicate audio sync status; green LEDs mean audio is in sync.
- To exit SYNC LOCK, press the SYNC LOCK button for each source.
