Safety Information
- Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the lock. This may void the warranty and compromise security.
- Use only the specified battery type (4x AA alkaline batteries). Do not mix old and new batteries or different battery types.
- Keep all components out of reach of children.
- Ensure the door frame is structurally sound and properly aligned for optimal lock performance.

Setup and Installation
The Kwikset SmartCode 270 is designed for easy installation, typically requiring only a screwdriver. For detailed, interactive 3D instructions with voice, text, and animation guidance, download the BILT app.
Pre-Installation Checks
- Ensure your door thickness is between 1-3/8" and 2" (35mm-51mm).
- Verify the backset is either 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60mm or 70mm).
- Confirm the cross-bore hole in the door is 2-1/8" (54mm) in diameter.
Installation Steps (Overview)
- Prepare the Door: If necessary, use the provided drilling template to ensure correct hole placement.
- Install the Latch: Insert the adjustable latch into the door edge and secure it with screws. Ensure the latch is set to the correct backset.
- Install the Exterior Assembly: Place the exterior touchpad assembly onto the door, ensuring the spindle passes through the latch.
- Install the Mounting Plate: Secure the interior mounting plate to the exterior assembly with screws. Route the cable through the plate.
- Install the Interior Assembly: Connect the cable from the exterior assembly to the interior assembly. Attach the interior assembly to the mounting plate and secure it.
- Insert Batteries: Install 4 AA alkaline batteries (not included) into the interior assembly.

Operating Instructions
Keyless Entry Operation
The touchpad allows for convenient keyless entry. To lock or unlock, simply use your programmed user code.

Programming User Codes
You can customize up to 50 user codes and 10 one-time user codes. A programming code allows you to add or delete user codes as needed. Refer to the detailed programming guide included with your lock for specific steps.

Auto-Lock Feature
For enhanced security, the lock can be configured to automatically lock after a set period. You can customize the auto-lock delay to 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes.

Vacation Mode
Activate Vacation Mode to temporarily disable the keypad, preventing unauthorized access while you are away. This feature ensures the lock cannot be operated from the exterior keypad.
Low Light Code Entry
The keypad features bright LED lights that illuminate the numbers, making it easy to enter your user code in low-light conditions or at night. Simply tap the keypad to activate the lights.
Intrusion Alert
After three consecutive incorrect code entries, the lock will sound an alarm and disable the keypad for one minute to deter tampering.
SmartKey Security Re-Keying
The SmartKey Security feature allows you to re-key your lock yourself in seconds to any Kwikset (KW1) key. This provides flexibility and enhanced security, especially if you need to change keys without replacing the entire lock.

Maintenance
Battery Replacement
The lock requires 4 AA alkaline batteries (not included) for operation. The battery life is approximately 12 months. Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears or when the lock's response time slows.

Cleaning
Clean the lock's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the finish and electronic components.
Troubleshooting
- Lock not responding: Check battery levels and replace if necessary. Ensure the cable connection between the exterior and interior assemblies is secure.
- Deadbolt not extending/retracting fully: Verify that the door frame strike plate hole is deep enough to accommodate the deadbolt. Ensure the lock is properly aligned and screws are not overtightened, which can cause binding.
- Keypad lights not illuminating: Tap the keypad to activate the backlight. If still unresponsive, check batteries.
- Incorrect code entries: The lock will sound an alarm and disable the keypad for 1 minute after 3 incorrect attempts. Wait for the lockout period to expire before trying again.
