Customer Operation & Installation Manual
Installation Requirements
This appliance must be installed by an authorised person in accordance with local regulations and Rinnai's instructions. Service and removal must also be performed by an authorised person.
Certification
The Rinnai IB35ETR / FS35ETR heaters are certified by the Australian Gas Association. The AGA Certification Number is displayed on the appliance dataplate. Modifications or permanent removal of parts or functions are not permitted.

Customer Information - Control Panel
The control panel features:
- LOCK Button: Indicates lock function.
- TIME/TEMP Display: Shows time of day, temperatures, or coded error messages.
- Flame Function: Sets Medium/High heat and overrides thermostat.
- CLOCK ADJUSTMENT AND TIMER INDICATORS: Indicate clock or dual timer programming.
- Lock Button: Activates/deactivates lock function.
- Override Button: Temporarily changes operation until the next programmed setting.
- Timer 1, Timer 2 Buttons: Select timers for operation.
- Temp/Time Adjustment Buttons: Increase/decrease temperature or adjust time.
- AUTO OFF Button: Activates automatic shut-off at a set temperature.
- ON/OFF Button: Main power switch.
TIMER Indicator: Shows when Timer 1 or Timer 2 is selected.
TIME/TEMP Adjustment: Adjusts temperature or time settings.
OVERRIDE: Temporarily changes operation until the next programmed setting.
AUTO OFF: When ON, thermostat turns heat to OFF when set temperature is reached. When OFF, thermostat turns heat to LOW.
Customer Information - Operation
IMPORTANT: Read and understand all instructions before operating the heater.
- Opening the Control Panel: Lift the lid lightly in the centre.
- Turning the Unit ON: Press the ON/OFF button. The ON indicator glows green, then red when the heater is alight. The fan starts automatically when the heater warms up. Initial ignition may involve only the front and middle burners on low, with the middle burner high and rear burner high igniting after 8 minutes.
- If Heater Does Not Ignite: Check gas supply. Press ON/OFF button again. If it fails after 4 attempts, contact Rinnai.
- Turning the Unit OFF: Press the ON/OFF button. The fan continues to operate for several minutes to cool the appliance. Do not unplug while the fan is running.
- Room Temperature Adjustment: Press the "+" or "-" buttons to adjust the temperature. Presets include [L] low, [16°C] to [26°C] in 1°C steps, and [H] continuously high.
- Lock Function: Press the LOCK button to prevent accidental operation. Press again for 3 seconds to deactivate.
- Flame Function: Press the FLAME button for automatic override to Medium/High heat for full flame effect.
- Auto Off Function: Press AUTO OFF. The indicator light illuminates, and the thermostat turns burners to OFF when the set temperature is reached. If not selected, the indicator is OFF, and the thermostat turns burners to LOW.
- Override: Press the OVERRIDE button to manually override current operation. The indicator flashes. Press again to deactivate.
Remote Control
The remote control can manually operate the heater when timers are not selected. Use ON/OFF buttons and temperature adjustment buttons. The remote uses a CR2032 lithium battery. Avoid getting the remote wet or dropping it. It operates within 5 metres and at a 40° angle. If timers are selected and the heater is in standby, pressing the OFF button on the remote deactivates the timers.
Customer Information - Setting the Clock
Setting the Clock: After plugging in or power failure, the display shows '----'. To set the clock (e.g., 10:35 am):
- Press SET TIMES once; Clock indicator flashes.
- Press and hold "+" to change minutes, then hours. Release when AM 10:00 appears.
- Press and hold "+" again to set minutes to 35. Use "-" to reverse.
- Press SET TIMES five times to lock. Clock and Timer indicators go out.
Programming the ON/OFF Timers: Ensure the clock is set correctly.
- To program Timer 1 for 7:10 am to 9:00 am: Press Set Times twice. Display shows AM 6:00. Timer 1 indicator flashes.
- Press "+" until AM 7:00, then again until AM 7:10. Use "-" if you pass 9:00 am.
- Press Set Times three times to lock. Display returns to current time.
Timer 2 is programmed similarly. Timers can be set for any two periods within 24 hours. Programmed times must be locked within one minute of the On Timer indicators flashing.
Operating the Timers
Ensure the clock is correct and timers are programmed. The heater attempts to heat the room by the programmed start time.
- To select Timer(s): Check display time, ON/OFF times. Press ON/OFF. Select desired temperature. Press Timer 1 and/or Timer 2 button(s). Timer indicators glow. Heater remains on standby until up to one hour before the programmed time. Timer indicator flashes when heater operates.
- Set and Forget Operation: Select Timer 1 and Timer 2 together. Both indicators glow. Heater alternates between programmed times.
- Power Failure: Timer programs are retained. Clock stops and restarts on power restoration, but time may be slow. Reset clock as per instructions.
- Preheat: Operates with timers. Heater may operate up to one hour before programmed start time. Room temperature sensed one hour prior determines preheat duration.
Customer Information - Safety Points
General Safety:
- This appliance must not be built-in. Maintain clearances.
- Do not restrict warm air discharge.
- Do not spray aerosols while the heater is operating.
- Do not allow curtains or flammable materials to contact the heater.
- Use only for heating.
- Do not allow articles through the louvres.
- Do not allow young children or infirm to sleep directly in front of the heater.
- Supervise young children. Avoid hand or body contact with louvres.
- Do not sit or lean against the appliance.
- Do not unplug the heater while it is operating or fans are cycling. Do not turn off by unplugging.
- Do not place liquid containers on top of the heater.
- Do not remove the Dress Guard. It reduces the risk of fire or burns. A secondary guard is recommended for children or the infirm.
- DO NOT CONNECT TO AN LPG GAS CYLINDER INDOORS.
- DO NOT PLACE ARTICLES ON OR AGAINST THIS APPLIANCE.
- DO NOT USE OR STORE FLAMMABLE MATERIALS NEAR THIS APPLIANCE.
- DO NOT SPRAY AEROSOLS IN THE VICINITY OF THIS APPLIANCE WHILE IT IS IN OPERATION.
WARNING: This appliance must be installed, serviced, and repaired by an authorised person.
The wire mesh guard must not be permanently removed.

IMPORTANT: Do not remove panels or attempt service work not mentioned in the chart.
SERVICE: Rinnai offers a service network. Contact numbers are on the back of the manual. Annual servicing by a qualified technician is recommended. Service calls for cleaning, maintenance, and wear and tear may be chargeable. Faults from insufficient gas supply, gas quality, installation errors, or operation errors are not covered by warranty.

The Flame Fire ETR displays error messages on the control panel to assist with fault diagnosis.

To clear error messages, turn the heater OFF then ON again. If the message persists, contact service.
Installer Information - Important Points
Read this manual carefully before installation. Do not install a damaged heater. Check the rating plate for the correct gas type. Installation must comply with local gas and electrical authority regulations.
IMPORTANT:
- Heater is not designed to be inbuilt or used with Flexible Flueing.
- Installation must comply with local gas and electrical authority regulations and AS/NZS 5601 for fixed ventilation.
- Do not install where curtains or combustible materials could contact the heater.
- Not designed for direct installation into combustible openings.
- Must not be located below a power socket-outlet.
- Warranty void if non-Rinnai flue components are used.
- Heater may emit smoke for approx. 2 hours during initial operation; ensure ventilation.
- The guard reduces risk of burns; do not remove. Secondary guard recommended for children/infirm (refer AS4553).
Installer Information - Location
Installation and Service must be carried out by an authorised person.
Considerations for positioning:
- Flue connection and terminal must comply with AS/NZS 5601 using only Rinnai flueing components.
- Ensure adequate warm air distribution.
- Area must have adequate fixed ventilation as per AS/NZS 5601.
- Keep heater away from curtains or combustible materials. Minimum clearances are shown in the diagram (100mm sides/top, 400mm front, 100mm from draft diverter).
- Heater is not designed to be inbuilt.
- Electrical Requirements: Heater has a 3-pin plug. Connect to a 240V, 10A earthed power point located at least 300mm to the side of the heater. Direct wiring is possible if the power supply is concealed. Consult a qualified electrician for direct wiring compliance with AS/NZS 5601 and AS3000.

Installer Information - Dimensions
Diagrams showing dimensions:
- Top view: 650mm width, 510mm depth, 80mm flue height.
- Front view: 650mm width, 535mm visible height, 220mm base height, 755mm total height.
- Side view: 560mm depth, 510mm visible height, 755mm total height.
Installer Information - Flueing
Available Flueing Options: Diagrams show options A, B, and C for flueing.
- Position heater considering 'Location' information.
- Assemble and connect flue per Rinnai Flueing Installation manual.
- Refer to local gas installation codes for pipe sizing. Copper supply should have a 1/2" flared connection.
- Run Gas Supply.
- Secure the heater: Use 2 fixings through rear base plate holes. Attach gas supply to the supplied fitting union. Purge all foreign materials from gas supply before connection.
Gas Leak Test: Use soapy solution on all gas connections. Bubbles indicate leaks. Wipe residue with a rag.
Installer Information - Log Installation
Log Set Installation:
- Remove packaging. Open side panels (1 screw each). Remove top glass retainer fastenings. Lift retainer. Loosen bottom glass retainer screws. Carefully lift glass out.
- Place log set into heater, aligning locating pins with bottom holes.
- Gently place ember bed material in front of the Front Log. Do not pour dust from the bag. Level material. Ember bed material must be placed after logs are fitted and removed first if logs are removed. Ensure logs sit flat.
- Replace glass and top glass retainer. Note: Ensure glass seal join is at the bottom. Reinstall side panels.
Note: Initial burn-in of logs takes approx. 2 hours. Flame colour may change.
Installer Information - Testing & Commissioning
1. To check burner pressure:
- Turn OFF and disconnect 240V power.
- Turn ON Gas supply.
- Refer to Data Plate/Technical Specification for burner pressures.
- Open right side front cover panel (1 screw). Remove 240V electrical cover.
- Remove test point screw and attach manometer to the valve assembly test point.
- Connect 240V power supply (caution: terminals exposed).
- Light heater, set to High heat, wait 8 minutes, check pressure. Adjust regulator if necessary (lower right corner).
- Disconnect 240V power. Remove manometer, replace test point screw, check for gas escapes.
- Replace electrical cover and side panel.
- Reconnect power supply.
- Turn heater ON/OFF a few times to check ignition.
- Burner aerations are factory preset.
Note: It may take 2 hours for logs to achieve full flame pattern and glow. Installer must ensure all flue gases are exhausted and no spillage into the room (refer AS/NZS 5601).
2. Commissioning:
- Complete Installation and Commissioning Checklist. Leave manual with customer.
- Instruct Customer: Ensure customer understands operation.
- Advise: Guard conforms to A.G.A. requirements to prevent burns; do not remove. It does not give full protection to young children or the infirm; a secondary guard is recommended. Appliance designed for luminous flames; may exhibit slight carbon deposits. Initial burning in (approx. 2 hours) may produce smoke/smell; run on High in a well-ventilated room.
Installer Information - Wiring Diagram
Wiring Diagram ETR with Delay Circuit is provided, showing connections for transformer, electrodes, sparker, flame rods, fan motor, thermal fuse, remote control receiver, thermistors, and control panel. Wire colour codes are listed: BK (Black), W (White), BW (Black/White), BR (Brown), BL (Blue), R (Red), RW (Red/White), GY (Grey).
Note: If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, agent, or qualified person with a genuine Rinnai spare part (Part No. 90182065).
