1.0 Introduction
The SCP-11 system provides premium audio and video distribution over a single Cat 5e/6 cable. Each transmitter supports HDTV signals to one or two receivers up to 1,000 feet away. Receivers can be powered via the Cat 5 cable up to 700 feet. Products are manufactured in Lexington, KY, USA.
The SCP-11 utilizes Audio Authority's AGE (Active Gain Equalization) technology for transmitting 1080p component video and digital coaxial audio up to 1,000 feet. This technology allows adjustable compensation for cable length, with fine-tuning at the remote end for optimal HDTV results. It also provides ground isolation, preventing hum bars and artifacts.
Audio Authority offers a range of audio/video products online at www.audioauthority.com or through authorized dealers.
1.1 Features
- Supports up to 1080p component video (YPbPr).
- Supports digital surround formats over coaxial digital audio.
- Receiver powered through Cat 5 cable up to 700 feet.
- Each transmitter can feed two receivers.
- Single-gang wallplate includes three Decora color inserts.
- Models 1180T or 1180TD are compatible with 1180R and/or 1180RD receivers.
- Receivers can be used with AVAtrix systems (requires Model 1110 adapter).
* For distances under 700 feet, receivers do not require external power supplies; they receive power from the transmitter over Cat 5. A power supply (571-014) is required for distances over 700 feet.
2.0 Checking Package Contents
Verify the shipping carton contains:
- One transmitter and/or one receiver
- 18V DC power adapter
- User manual
Note: Retain original packing material for returns. Contact Audio Authority immediately if items are missing, providing model number and invoice.
3.0 Installation
Installation may require specialized knowledge and tools. Contact a local custom home installation specialist, often members of the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA), found via www.cedia.org.
3.1 System Design
The SCP-11 system consists of a Model 1180T or 1180TD Cat 5 Transmitter and a Cat 5 Receiver (Model 1180R or 1180RD). Surface mount and decora versions are electrically identical.
Configurations: Either transmitter can connect to one or two receivers. For distances under 700 feet, receiver power is supplied via the Cat 5 cable from the transmitter. For distances over 700 feet, a separate power supply may be needed at the receiver.
Diagram Description (Page 5): Illustrates various connection configurations showing Model 1180TD/1180T transmitters connecting to Model 1180RD/1180R receivers, including one-to-one and one-to-two setups.
3.2 Rough-in and Wiring
The Cat 5 receiver is typically placed behind a TV or projector. For wall-mounted receivers, a two-gang plaster ring is recommended for service access.
Use good quality Category 5e or 6 UTP cable. Avoid pinching, kinking, or stapling the cable. Note the cable length for compensation adjustments. Install RJ-45 plugs on both ends using EIA-568 pairing (pins 1-2, 3-6, 4-5, 7-8). Test cables with a professional network cable tester.
Diagram Description (Page 6): Shows EIA-568B standard termination for RJ-45 connectors, detailing the wire color order for each pin. Also shows a system diagram with an HDTV Source connected to an 1180T Transmitter, a Cat 5 cable carrying A/V signals and receiver power (up to 700 ft) to an 1180R Receiver connected to an HDTV. It notes that receiver power is not required for distances under 700 ft and that transmitter power is required.
3.3 Installing the Cat 5 Receiver(s)
- Plug Cat 5 cables into the 1180R or 1180RD.
- Adjust cable length compensation: Set to 1 for 100-199 ft. cables, 2 for 200-299 ft. cables, and so on, for cables over 100 ft.
- Connect the display/projector using high-quality audio patch cords and component video cables.
Diagram Description (Page 7): Depicts receiver connections. The 1180R is shown, with similar connections for the 1180RD wallplate version. Ports include: CAT 5e/6 CABLE FROM TRANSMITTER (with BUS INPUT), CABLE LENGTH COMPENSATION (with settings for cable length), OUTPUT PANEL JACKS (VIDEO YPbPr, AUDIO, DIGITAL AUDIO), and 18V DC POWER (noted as required only for long bus cable runs). Instructions indicate connecting video/audio to TV/receiver and connecting power supply if Cat 5 length exceeds 700 ft.
Cable Length Compensation: Adjust the MINIMUM compensation setting that yields the best picture. For long RCA cables, increase compensation one click per 200 feet of coaxial cable length.
3.4 Installing the Cat 5 Transmitter
- Mount the 1180T or 1180TD Transmitter. Connect component video and audio cables from the source to the Transmitter's inputs.
- Plug the Cat 5 cable into an output jack on the Transmitter. Power up A/V equipment at both ends.
- Power the SCP-11 system. Install a receiver power supply if the Cat 5 cable exceeds 700 feet.
- Fine-tune cable length compensation at the receiver location for optimal picture quality.
Diagram Description (Page 8): Shows transmitter connections. The 1180T is pictured, with similar connections for the 1180TD wallplate version. Ports include: CAT 5e/6 CABLE TO RECEIVER(S) (with BUS OUTPUT), INPUT PANEL JACKS (VIDEO YPbPr, DIGITAL AUDIO), and 18V DC POWER. Instructions indicate connecting video/audio to TV/receiver and connecting power supply.
4.0 Adapting Dual Cat 5 Systems Using Model 1110
Model 1180R and 1180RD can be used with Audio Authority's AVAtrix, SixDrive, and DuoDrive systems using the Model 1110 adapter to connect dual Cat 5 outputs to single Cat 5 receivers.
- The 1110 routes YPbPr and digital audio signals to the correct Cat 5 pairs but does not pass analog audio.
- The 1110 outputs IR signals via a 3.5 mm jack.
- Power is delivered to the receiver through the 1110, but power is still required at the receiver for cable lengths over 700 feet.
- Always test Cat 5 cables for proper pairing before powering the system; continuity testing is insufficient.
Diagram Description (Page 9): Illustrates an AVAtrix system with a Model 1180RD. It shows a connection from an AVATRIX CAT 5 HD MATRIX to a MODEL 1110 DUAL-TO-SINGLE CAT 5 ADAPTER, which then connects to a MODEL 1180RD SINGLE CAT 5 receiver (up to 700 feet). A warning is present to "ALWAYS TEST PRE-FABRICATED CABLES FOR PROPER PAIRING!".
5.0 Getting the Best Results
- Output Display Device: Signal quality depends on the display device. Some standard definition TVs may offer better picture quality than others. Heavily compressed HD video feeds might not look as good as composite sources on the same TV.
- Distance: Long distances are possible, but use high-quality coaxial cable (e.g., RG-59) to avoid signal loss.
- Interference: Nearby electrical devices, such as older computer monitors, can emit electromagnetic fields that interfere with video equipment performance.
6.0 Troubleshooting Guide
- Check SCP-11 power LEDs and ensure the transmitter AC adapter is plugged into a working outlet.
- Connect an AC adapter to the receiver for long-distance applications.
- Use a network cable tester to verify EIA-568B pairing in Cat 5e/6 cables.
- Check input/output cables for loose connections, inspect for damage, or substitute with a known good cable.
- Adjust the Cable Length Compensation on the Receiver. A low setting may yield the best results.
