Model 1170 High Definition Cat 5 MultiDriver™ Expander
Brand: Audio Authority
General Information
The Model 1170 High Definition Cat 5 MultiDriver™ Expander is a versatile product designed for expanding audio, video, and IR control signals over Cat 5 cable runs. It serves as a companion product to Audio Authority's Model 1166 or 1156 AutoSelectors, providing six outputs to Model 9878 Cat 5 HDTV Connection Plates (Wallplates). The Model 1170 is mechanically stackable, allowing up to six units to be stacked with a host unit for a total of 36 Wallplate outputs. When used with the Model 1171 High Definition Cat 5 MultiDriver™, the Model 1170 adds six Wallplate outputs, supporting up to 42 Wallplates in total. It distributes audio, video, and IR control signals over Cat 5 cable runs up to 1,000 feet. DC power for each Wallplate is supplied by the host unit through the Cat 5 cable.
The Model 1176 is an alternative for systems requiring individual source selection per Wallplate.

Installation
This product should be installed by a qualified custom electronics installer. Refer to the host unit's (Model 1166/56 or 1171) instruction manual for complete installation directions.
1. Stacking Units
To stack units:
- Place the host unit (Model 1171, 1156, or 1166) upside down on a protective surface like a terrycloth towel.
- Remove the four feet and the bus port cover from the host unit, saving them and their screws.
- Plug one end of the bus cable (purchased separately) into the host unit's bus port connector. Ensure it is fully seated, noting the center polarizing key.
- Turn the Model 1170 to be stacked upside down. Thread the bus cable through its bus ports.
- Engage the Model 1170's four threaded studs with the corresponding threaded holes in the host unit where the feet were removed.
- Tighten the hex head screws on the bottom of the Model 1170 in sequence until lightly snug.
- Plug the other end of the bus cable into the next unit's bus port connector.
- Continue stacking units, ensuring the last connector is plugged into the bottom unit. Push any excess cable into the empty space inside the unit. Verify all plugs are fully seated through the bus port.
- Install the bus port cover and feet removed from the host unit onto the bottom Model 1170. Turn the stack right side up.
2. Rack Mount Adapters
For installation in a 19-inch equipment rack:
- Remove the cover screws adjacent to the front panel of each product. Use these screws to mount Model 1191 rack adapters. Place a cylindrical metal spacer under the adapters at every screw location.
- Use a straightedge to align the rack adapters on the stack of products.
CAUTION: This product will be damaged if spacers are not used on every screw.
3. Wallplate Hookup
Caution: Do not connect A and B cables incorrectly. Do not apply system power until cables are tested and A and B connections are verified.
- Run two lengths of good quality Category 5e or 6 UTP cable from the main system to each Wallplate location. Carefully mark cables of each pair as A and B. Incorrect connection may damage the Wallplate. Using different cable jacket colors or labels for A and B is recommended.
- Install an RJ-45 plug on each end of the cables using the EIA-568B pairing (pins 1-2, 3-6, 4-5, 7-8).
- Test each cable with a professional network cable tester before plugging it into the 1100 Series system. Continuity testing is not sufficient. The twisted pairs must be properly matched for balanced line transmission.
- Plug the pairs of cables into the output jacks on the Model 1170s. Ensure cable A connects to jack A and cable B connects to jack B. Do not permanently mount the Wallplates yet.
- Plug a pair of cables into each Model 9878 Wallplate, connecting cable A to jack A and cable B to jack B.
- Adjust the Cable Length Compensation control on each Wallplate based on the distance from the head end. Set the dial to the nearest number of hundreds of feet of cable distance. After system power-up, fine-tune each setting using an HD source and display.
- Mount Wallplates after initial testing is complete.
4. Initial Testing
- Plug the power supply furnished with each 1100 Series product into its respective unit and then into a wall outlet or plug strip.
- Verify that the power indicators on the Model 1171, all Model 1170s, and all Wallplates are illuminated. Allow up to 1 minute for the system to complete self-addressing on initial power-up. The Model 1171 power lamp may blink slowly during this process.
- Apply power to the source equipment.
- Check for clear video and audio at each Wallplate using an HD display.
- Mount the Wallplates permanently.
Using the Cat 5 Infrared Signal Pathway
To enable infrared remote control of head-end sources, a Model 9878 Wallplate requires an infrared receiver (not supplied) plugged into its IR Remote jack. IR remote signals received by the Wallplate are repeated through the host unit's (Model 1166 or 1171) IR Output port. This allows a learning remote to select and control sources. For this feature to function, the host unit's IR Output port must be connected to a compatible infrared emitter or distribution system.
The Model 1170's IR operation with a Model 1171 is similar, but source selection is not possible as there is only one source.
Troubleshooting Guide
Symptom | Possible Cause(s) |
---|---|
Picture has artifacts or appears sparkly | Excessive cable length compensation |
Digital audio inoperative | Neither or both optical and coaxial cables connected to source |
Does not repeat an IR command | Some remotes cannot be processed by this system; IR Output not connected to IR system |
One Wallplate inoperative | Cables swapped or plugs incorrectly pinned out |
Wallplates inoperative on one Model 1171 or 1170 | Bus cable loose or power supply unplugged |
Operation
The Model 1170 acts as a distribution center for Model 9878 Wallplates. With an infrared receiver and a programmed universal infrared remote control at each Wallplate, users can control video sources located at the main home theater. The same remote can also control local components like televisions or DVD players. Consult your installer for specific instructions.

Hookup Diagrams
Using the Model 1170 to Expand 1171 Outputs
The Model 1171 Cat 5 MultiDriver connects to an HDTV source (e.g., satellite box, DVD player) and provides up to six Wallplate outputs. Up to six Model 1170 MultiDriver Expanders can be added to expand the number of outputs to a maximum of 42. See "Using Compatible IR Products" for infrared control pathway functionality.
Using the Model 1170 to Expand 1156/66 Outputs
The Model 1170 can expand Model 1156 or 1166 AutoSelector outputs and can be used with Model 1176 Matrix Router Expanders. The Model 1170 does not offer matrix functionality but provides six Cat 5 outputs with the same audio and video content as the AutoSelector's main output.
System Diagram Description:
The diagram illustrates a system configuration where a Model 1171, 1166, or 1156 unit is connected to multiple Model 1170 expanders. Each Model 1170 connects to multiple Model 9878 Wallplates using two runs of Cat 5e/6 cable per Wallplate. The diagram also shows the connection of 18V power supplies to a power strip and the use of a Xantech® 291-00 IR Receiver or equivalent. The system capacity shown is 12 Model 9878 Wallplates, all displaying the same input as the 1166 Main Output. An arrow indicates connection to a compatible IR emitter.
Using Compatible IR Products
Infrared signals can be transmitted from any Wallplate location back to the host unit's (1171) IR output by connecting a compatible IR receiver to the Wallplate's IR jack. The Wallplate provides 12V power to the IR receiver; do not use receivers that supply their own power, as this could cause damage.
Connect a compatible emitter to the host unit's IR output. Use only passive emitters to avoid damage.
Receiver Pinout
Receivers are powered by 12 volts on the sleeve contact of the 9878 Wallplate IR jack.
- Tip = Signal
- Ring = Ground
- Sleeve = +12 Volts
WARNING: Connect receivers (12V only) to Wallplate with no connecting block or other power source.
Emitter Pinout
A passive emitter typically has a two-conductor plug.
- Tip = Signal
- Sleeve = Ground
WARNING: Use only passive emitters, without a powered connecting block.
