Alternator Identification
The document includes diagrams to help identify different alternator types:
- Corvette Alternator: Typically has a 6.06-inch diameter.
- Non-Corvette Alternator: Typically has a 5.46-inch diameter.
- Pulley Sizes: "Small" alternators use pulleys with a 1.68-inch diameter, while "large" alternators use pulleys with a 2.19-inch diameter.
- A 12mm bolt and flange nut are also shown for reference.
Installation Steps
Step 1: Attach Idler Pulley to Front Plate
Attach the idler pulley to the front plate. Note: Leave all fasteners finger tight until step 5. A diagram indicates that the three power steering pump spotfaces should face the engine.
Step 2: Mount Front Plate Assembly to Engine
Mount the front plate assembly to the engine. This involves attaching the front plate using two 1-inch OD x 3-1/8 inch long spacer tubes and two M10x100mm bolts screwed into the cylinder head. An additional M10x100mm bolt screws into the engine block. A 3/4-inch OD x 3-1/8 inch long tube is also used.
Step 3: Mount Rear Plate to Engine
Mount the rear plate to the engine. This step uses two 1-inch OD x 2-inch long spacer tubes and two 1-inch OD x 7/8-inch long spacer tubes, secured with M10x100mm bolts screwed into the cylinder head.
Step 4: Mount Alternator
Mount the alternator to the bracket assembly using two M10x80mm bolts and two 10mm flange nuts.
Step 5: Torque Fasteners
Lift the front plate to support the weight of the components, then snug up all bolts. Torque specifications are:
- 10mm bolts: 37 ft-lbs
- 12mm bolts: 50 ft-lbs
Step 6: Mount Power Steering Pump
Mount the power steering pump. It is secured with 8mm bolts and 8mm nuts. Extra bolts are provided for compatibility with various pumps. Some pulleys may have windows for access to the 8mm bolts. The pulley and pump can be installed as a single assembly after the 10mm bolts are torqued. Kwik Performance pumps are supplied with the pulley pre-installed in the correct position.
Step 7: Install Belt
Note: Refer to the belt length suggestions on Sheet 1.
- With AC: For a 7-groove 4665 compressor, install the belt in the rear 6 grooves. For an 8-groove 4711 compressor, install the belt in the middle 6 grooves.
Note: For optimal performance and longevity, Kwik Performance suggests using the shortest belt that can be reasonably installed.
Recommended Installation Procedure:
- When installing the serpentine belt, route it around all pulleys as shown in the diagram, excluding the water pump pulley.
- Ensure the belt is seated correctly in the grooves of the AC compressor.
- Verify that the belt is fully seated in the grooves of all grooved pulleys.
- Retract the belt tensioner completely and slip the belt onto the water pump pulley.
- Release the tensioner.
