IKEA BETYDLIG/RÄCKA/HUGAD Window Hardware Buying Guide
Introduction
This guide provides information on IKEA's BETYDLIG, RÄCKA, and HUGAD window hardware. It covers the different parts, how to build solutions, good-to-know tips, how to measure and plan your curtain solution, and various combinations.
Parts Overview
The essential parts for your window hardware solution include:
- Wall/ceiling bracket
- Curtain rod holder
- Curtain rod
- Finial
We all have different needs and preferences when it comes to dressing our windows. Whether you are creating single, double, or triple-layer solutions, you will need hardware like curtain rods, brackets, curtain rod holders, and finials.
IKEA curtain rods come in various colors and diameters, allowing you to choose a style that suits your preference and the weight of your curtains. The RÄCKA curtain rod has a smaller diameter than the HUGAD curtain rod, but both are extendable to fit different window widths. BETYDLIG brackets and curtain rod holders are available in different colors to match your chosen rod and can be mounted on the wall or ceiling, depending on your desired look and room impression.
Finials add the final touch to your curtain setup. They are interchangeable, allowing you to update the look of your window as often as you like.
How to Build
Single Layer Solution:
Mount the brackets on the wall or ceiling. Adjust the position of the curtain rod holder to hang curtains close to the window or farther out. Curtain rods are available in various diameters, lengths, and colors, and are extendable. Complete the look with finials from the IKEA range.
Layered Solution:
To create a layered solution, you will need extra rod holders and brackets. Mount the additional rod holders on the brackets and add extra curtain rods.
Good to Know
Bracket Placement: BETYDLIG brackets are L-shaped and can be attached with either a longer or shorter arm to adjust the distance between the curtain and the window. When wall-mounted, a longer arm can accommodate up to three rod holders for multiple layers, while a shorter arm holds a maximum of two. When ceiling-mounted, any arm length can be used to adjust the distance, but only one rod holder can be mounted.
Bracket Spacing: The maximum length between two brackets is 55 inches (approx. 140 cm). For longer solutions, add a bracket for every 55 inches. This means three brackets for rods between 55-110 inches, and four brackets for rods longer than 110 inches.
Curtain Rods: Curtain rods are available in two diameters (3/4" and 1 1/8") and various lengths and colors. They are all extendable. You can personalize the look with interchangeable finials.
Weight Capacity: BETYDLIG brackets and rod holders can support a maximum of 22 lbs when placed 55 inches apart, provided the curtain weight is evenly distributed. RÄCKA curtain rods support up to 11 lbs, and HUGAD curtain rods support up to 22 lbs when placed 55 inches apart. Always check the specific weight capacity of your chosen curtain rod.
Layered Solutions: Extra curtain rods and rod holders are required for layered solutions and are sold separately.
How to Measure and Plan Your Curtain Solution
Step 1: Consider Curtain Length
Decide on your preferred curtain length: window sill, apron, floor length, or a style that pools on the floor.
Step 2: Decide on Mounting Type
Evaluate your window area, considering window sills, radiators, plants, or furniture placement. Choose between ceiling-mounted or wall-mounted rods. Ceiling mounting can improve sound absorption and insulation, making the room appear larger. Wall-mounted solutions are typically placed about 6 inches above the window, but the height is flexible.
Ensure a distance of approximately 5-6 inches between the curtain and the window/wall to prevent obstruction when the curtains are pulled aside.
Step 3: Calculate Curtain Rod Width
Measure the width of your window. For fabric curtains, add at least 6 inches to each side to ensure full window coverage and allow curtains to open completely. If combining curtains with roller blinds, add a few extra centimeters for a wider curtain appearance.
Step 4: Calculate the Number of Brackets
- For a stable rod or rail up to 55 inches, use two brackets.
- For rods or rails between 55 and 110 inches, use three brackets.
- For rods or tracks longer than 110 inches, use four brackets.
