1.0 General Warnings and Information
⚠️ WARNING! DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur:
- Failure to follow these instructions and Convertible Seat labels can result in injury or death to a child from striking the vehicle's interior during a sudden stop or crash.
- Read these instructions and the vehicle owner's manual for complete details.
- Follow both manuals carefully. In case of conflict, the vehicle owner's manual takes precedence regarding the vehicle's seat belt, LATCH, or airbags.
- Failure to use the automobile seat belt or adjust it properly can result in your child striking the vehicle's interior during a sudden stop or crash, causing serious injury or death.
- DO NOT allow others (babysitters, friends, grandparents, etc.) to use this Convertible Seat unless they read, understand the instructions and labels, and can demonstrate proper use.
- Use only car seat accessories manufactured by Baby Trend. Accessories can affect your child's safety.
- DO NOT modify or attach any toys, padding, or other items to this Convertible Seat. Untested modifications could result in injury in a crash.
- Secure this Convertible Seat with the vehicle seat belt or LATCH.
Unsecured child restraints can injure others in a crash.
Direct sunlight can make Convertible Seat surfaces hot enough to burn your child. Use caution and check the vehicle and Convertible Seat on hot, sunny days.
NEVER leave a child unattended under any circumstance.
DO NOT use this Convertible Seat if it has been in a crash.
DO NOT use this Convertible Seat if it is damaged or has missing parts.
STOP USING THIS Convertible Seat AND THROW IT AWAY after the date on the back of the seat. Dispose of it properly.
NEVER use this Convertible seat in the home, on boats, or in motor homes with side-facing seats or other non-certified uses. Only use this restraint in Automobiles and Aircraft.
NEVER use this Convertible Seat in any vehicle seating position equipped with an active air bag. Read your vehicle's owner manual to turn off your airbag if necessary. For side airbags, see section 4.1.
2.0 Use Recommendations
Children should use a child restraint with a built-in harness system until they exceed the weight or height limits specified by the manufacturer.
2.1 Rear facing without the upper seatback
Weight and Height Requirements:
This child restraint, without the upper seatback in a rear facing position, is designed for children whose:
- Weight is between 5 and 22 lbs (2.3 and 10 kg), and
- Top of head has NOT reached the max height red line on the seat back.
Child MUST meet BOTH of these requirements to use this Convertible Seat without the upper seatback installed.

2.2 Rear facing with the upper seatback
Weight and Height Requirements:
This child restraint, WITH the upper seatback installed in a rear facing position, is designed for children whose:
- Weight is between 5 and 40 lbs (2.3 kg and 18.1 kg), and
- Head is 1 inch (2.54 cm) below the top of the seat.
Child MUST meet BOTH of these requirements to use this Convertible Seat.

2.3 Forward facing seat requirements
Weight and Height Requirements:
This child restraint, with the upper seatback installed in a forward facing position, is designed for children whose:
- Weight is between 23 and 65 lbs (10.43 kg and 29 kg), and
- Height is 50 inches (127 cm) or less.
- Age is 1 year old.
Child MUST meet ALL of these requirements to use this Convertible Seat forward facing.

4.0 Selecting a Vehicle Seating Location
⚠️ WARNING! DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur:
- Only use this Convertible Seat with the vehicle's seat belts or LATCH System.
- DO NOT use this Convertible Seat with vehicle seat belts mounted to the vehicle door or door frame.
- DO NOT use this Convertible Seat if it cannot be properly installed. Some child restraints do not fit all vehicle seating positions.
- NEVER use this Convertible Seat in any vehicle seating position equipped with an active air bag. Consult your vehicle's owner manual for airbag deactivation. For side airbags, see Section 4.1.
- DO NOT use this Convertible Seat in the rear seat of a compact pickup truck, as severe head injury or death can occur.
- DO NOT use this Convertible Seat in a vehicle with side-facing seats or rear-facing vehicle seats. See Section 4.2.
- NEVER attempt to install this Convertible Seat without the upper seat back installed in a forward-facing position.
- NEVER use this restraint in a forward-facing position with the removable upper seatback removed.
- NEVER attach two LATCH lower anchors to the same LATCH attachment point.
- NEVER use both the LATCH lower anchors and the vehicle's seat belts at the same time.
4.1 Proper Installation
- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises that children under age 13 are safer in rear seating positions.
- Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for car seat installation instructions.
- Use convertible seats in a rear seat location whenever possible.
- Follow LATCH anchor connector points maximum weight ratings.
- Never place the Convertible Seat in a front seat location unless recommended by the vehicle owner's manual.
- For vehicles with airbags, refer to the vehicle owner's manual for child restraint installation information. If a front seat location with an airbag must be used, follow the vehicle manufacturer's instructions and move the vehicle seat back as far as possible.
Baby Trend Policy Statement: Use Of PROtect™ Car Seat Series Convertible Car Seat Child Restraint In Conjunction With Side Airbags
Refer to your owner's manual to determine your vehicle's side impact air bag types for individual seating positions. The Baby Trend PROtect™ Car Seat Series Convertible Car Seat may be used in any rear seating position equipped only with roof-mounted, "curtain" type side impact airbags. For other types of side impact airbags, consult your vehicle's owner's manual or the automobile manufacturer.
4.2 Vehicle Seats to Avoid
DO NOT use this Convertible Seat with the following vehicle seats:
- Seats facing SIDES of vehicle: ❌

- Rear seats of small extended cab pickup trucks: ❌
4.3 Vehicle Seat Belt Systems
Use only the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt, lap belt, or LATCH system when restraining this Convertible Seat.
Vehicle seat belt systems vary. Not all vehicle seat belts can be used with a child restraint. Refer to the information in this section on the various types of vehicle seat belt systems.

4.4 Vehicle Seat Belt Systems to Avoid
DO NOT use this Convertible Seat with the following vehicle seats:
- Passive restraints with motorized shoulder belt: ❌

4.5 LATCH Lower Anchors
Consult your vehicle owner's manual or manufacturer for location and availability of LATCH anchor points. Not all vehicles have the same locations or maximum weight requirements for LATCH!

4.6 LATCH - Top Tether Anchor Locations
Top Tether Locations are indicated by the following symbol: ⚓ (LATCH Top Tether symbol).
Consult your vehicle owner's manual for your vehicle's exact LATCH locations, anchor identification, and usage requirements.
Maximum Child Weight for LATCH: Lower Anchor 45 lbs (20.4 kg), Top Tether 65 lbs (29.5 kg).

5.0 Installation and Use
⚠️ WARNING! DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur:
- Use only in a rear facing position for infants weighing less than 22 lbs (9 kg).
- Use with children weighing between 5 - 65 lbs (2.3 - 29 kg) and height 50 inches (127 cm) or less.
- Rear Facing (without upper seatback): 5 - 22 lbs.
- Rear Facing (with upper seatback): 5 - 40 lbs (2.3 - 18.1 kg).
- Forward Facing: 1 year old, 23 - 65 lbs (10.43 - 29 kg).
- Snugly adjust the harness (cannot pinch webbing).
- Secure the top anchorage strap.
- Secure with vehicle's LATCH system or seat belt.
- Follow all instructions on the restraint and on the back of the seat. Call 1-800-328-7363 for instructions if needed.
- Use vehicle seat belt (not LATCH) for children weighing more than 45 lbs (20.5 kg).
- Register your child restraint with Baby Trend.
- DO NOT place this rear facing child seat in a front seat with an active airbag.
- NEVER leave child unattended.
5.1 Child Placement in Restraint
Routing paths for forward facing installation:
- Lap belt with top tether
- Lap/Shoulder belt with top tether
- LATCH Lower anchor with top tether
- Place child in the restraint with their back flat against the back of the restraint and bottom touching the seat.
- Rear Facing: Harness Strap should be at or below the shoulder. Forward Facing: Harness Strap Height should be at or slightly above the child's shoulder. Note: Forward facing occupants weighing more than 32 lbs (14.5kg) or 35 inches (88.9 cm) MUST use height position 4.
- Place 5-point crotch buckle in the rear position (rear-facing) or outer position (forward-facing).
- Insert buckle tongues into the buckle. Pull up to test security.
- Place chest clip at armpit level. Insert tabs, press together, pull outward to test security.
- Pull harness adjuster to tighten harness straps. A snug strap should not allow slack, lie straight, and not press on skin or push body unnaturally. To loosen, push the harness tension adjuster button and gently pull straps.
5.2 Rear Facing Installation with Lap/Shoulder Belt
Requirements: See section 2.1 (Weight 5-22 lbs, head not at max height line).

⚠️ WARNING! Never use a Top Tether connector in a rear facing installation!!
The Convertible car seat, in a Rear Facing installation, was designed with a removable upper seatback to allow for proper installation when it contacts the front seat. If the upper seatback prevents a 45-degree installation, remove it and install the Convertible at 45 degrees per instructions. To remove the upper seatback, refer to section 5.11. Reinstall the upper seat back when the child reaches 22 lbs (9.98 kg), or the child's head nears the max height red line. Keep child rear-facing as long as possible. Contact Baby Trend Customer Service at 1-800-328-7363 for questions.
Rear Facing Installation with Lap/Shoulder Belt. With Headrest
Requirements: See section 2.2 (Weight 5-40 lbs, head 1 inch below top).
- Squeeze recline handle and recline the seat to positions 1, 2, or 3. Angling the seat helps keep the baby's head back and airway open. Note: A rolled up towel or pool noodle can be used for extra elevation and angle adjustment.
- Place restraint in a rear seating position and ensure the vehicle is level.
- Unsnap the 2 front snaps and the 2 side snaps. Lift and fold back padding.

- Route lap/shoulder belt through the rear facing safety belt path. Remove any twist in webbing to ensure it lies flat.
- Put weight in the seat, compress the vehicle seat cushion, insert the seat buckle tongue into the buckle, and pull the seat belt tight. Pull up on the buckle to ensure it is secure.
- Lower flap and secure hook and loop fasteners and all snaps.
- Ensure the rear facing angle indicator bubble is located between the boundary lines.
- Check for movement of the restraint at the safety belt path. The restraint should not move more than 1 inch in any direction. Repeat all steps until all safety steps are met.
5.3 Rear Facing Installation with Lap Belt

- Attach the LATCH connector to the vehicle's LATCH anchor with the release button facing downwards. Ensure the adjuster side of the LATCH belt is on the left side of the car seat. Note: If the adjuster is facing the wrong direction or the LATCH connector is upside down, the restraint will not secure properly.
- Put weight in the seat, compress the vehicle seat cushion, attach the LATCH connector to the vehicle's LATCH anchor, and pull the adjuster belt tight. Pull up on the LATCH connector to ensure it is secure.
- Lower flap and secure hook and loop fasteners and all snaps.
- Ensure the rear facing angle indicator bubble is located between the boundary lines.
- Check for movement of the restraint at the safety belt path. The restraint should not move more than 1 inch in any direction. Repeat all steps until all safety steps are met.
5.5 Forward Facing Installation with Lap/shoulder Belt and Top Tether
Requirements: See section 2.3 (Weight 23-65 lbs, Height 50 inches or less, Age 1 year).
- Ensure harness is adjusted to position 3 or 4. Use recline positions 5 and 4 for forward facing.
- Ensure vehicle is level, the Convertible is placed flat, and rests on the front outer edge of the vehicle seat.
- Lift back flap and place harness to side.
Installation Steps:
- Route lap/shoulder belt through the forward facing belt path.
- Put weight in seat, compress the automobile seat cushion, insert the buckle tongue into the buckle, and adjust seat belt as tight as possible. Pull up on buckle tongue to ensure it is secure.
- Lower flap and secure hook and loop fasteners.
- Attach Top Tether to a designated anchor point. Pull Top Tether strap until webbing strap is snug. Note: Your vehicle owner's manual will provide anchor locations and maximum weight of the restraint's occupant for LATCH connections.
- Check for movement of the restraint at the safety belt path. The restraint should not move more than 1 inch in any direction. Repeat all steps until all safety steps are met.

5.6 Forward Facing Installation with Lap Belt and Top Tether
Requirements: See section 2.3 (Weight 23-65 lbs, Height 50 inches or less, Age 1 year).

- Attach Top Tether to a designated anchor point. Pull Top Tether strap until webbing strap is snug. Note: Your vehicle owner's manual will provide anchor locations and maximum weight of the restraint's occupant for LATCH connections.
- Check for movement of the restraint at the safety belt path. The restraint should not move more than 1 inch in any direction. Repeat all steps until all safety steps are met.

5.7 LATCH - Forward Facing Installation with Lower Anchor and Top Tether
NOTE: Use the vehicle's seat belt (not LATCH) for children weighing more than 45 lbs (20.5 kg).
Requirements: See Section 2.3 (Weight 23-45 lbs, Height 50 inches or less, Age 1 year).
- Place restraint in a rear seating position designated as lower anchor compatible. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for LATCH locations.
- Ensure vehicle is level, the Convertible is placed flat, and rests on the front outer edge of the vehicle seat. Ensure harness is adjusted to position 5 or 4. Only use recline positions 5 and 4 for forward facing.
- Lift back flap and place harness to side.
Installation Steps:
- Route LATCH belt through the front facing safety belt path, leaving the adjuster side of the LATCH belt on the child's RIGHT side. Remove any twist in webbing to ensure it lies flat.
- Put weight in the seat, compress the vehicle seat cushion, attach the LATCH connector to the vehicle's LATCH anchor, and pull the adjuster belt tight. Pull up on the LATCH connector to ensure it is secure.
- Lower flap and secure hook and loop fasteners.
- Attach Top Tether to a designated anchor point. Pull Top Tether strap until webbing strap is snug. Note: Your automobile's owner's manual will provide anchor locations and maximum weight of the restraint's occupant for LATCH connections.
- Check for movement of the restraint at the safety belt path. The restraint should not move more than 1 inch in any direction. Repeat all steps until all safety steps are met.

5.8 LATCH Connector Belt Rerouting
The correct belt path must be used for proper installation.
Reroute From Forward Facing Belt Path to Rear Facing Belt Path:
- Unthread LATCH belt out of the front facing safety belt path.
- Unsnap the 2 front snaps and the 2 side snaps. Lift and fold back padding.
Reroute From Rear Facing Belt Path to Front Facing Belt Path:
- Unthread LATCH belt out of the rear facing safety belt path.
- Route LATCH belt through the front facing safety belt path, leaving the adjuster side of the LATCH belt on the child's RIGHT side. Remove any twist in webbing to ensure it lies flat.
- Lower flap and secure hook and loop fasteners and all snaps.

5.9 Aircraft Installation
- Follow the seat belt installation for use in an Aircraft.
- Consult your airline for requirements to use this restraint.
5.10 Child Placement in Restraint
- Place child in the restraint with their back flat against the back of the restraint and bottom touching the seat.
- Rear Facing: Harness Strap should be at or below the shoulder. Forward Facing: Harness Strap Height should be at or slightly above the child's shoulder. Note: Forward facing occupants weighing more than 32 lbs (14.5kg) or 35 inches (88.9 cm) MUST use height position 4. Then place harness straps over the child's shoulders. Note: Check that the harness straps are just above the child's shoulders.
- The Convertible has been safety tested with the height insert and head pillow. The height insert is needed until the child's shoulder is at or above position 1.

5.11 Shoulder Height Adjustment
Shoulder Height Positions:
- Facing Direction:
- Rear Facing: Positions 1, 2, and 3.
- Forward Facing: Positions 3 and 4. Note: Forward facing occupants weighing more than 32 lbs (14.5 kg) or 35 inches (88.9 cm) MUST use height position 4.
Height Adjustment:
- Pull harness release handles outward.
- Raise or lower to the appropriate position.

5.12 Crotch Buckle Position
- Press the crotch buckle release button down with fingers and move position.
- Crotch buckle placement:
- Rear facing: rear most position.
- Forward facing: forward most position.

5.13 Harness Length Adjustment
A- Protect convertible manufactured before 03/20/2017 Follow A.1. Protect convertible manufactured on or after 03/20/2017 Follow A.2.
- Unhook the harness straps from the metal plate and move to the desired adjustment.
- A.1: Feed one Harness Strap Connector plate through each Harness Strap End. Rotate the other Harness Strap Connector plate and feed through each Harness Strap End. Ensure straps are securely connected to both connector plates.
- A.2: Feed one Harness Strap Connector plate through each Harness Strap End. Ensure both straps are securely connected to the connector plate. Only splitter plates with “Single Use Approved BT 2016” are approved for single use.
Inspect harness straps for twists. Twisted straps can prevent proper tightening and may not adequately restrain your child. Before using, pull harness straps from the front to ensure they are securely re-attached.

5.14 Locking Clip Use
If your vehicle lap/shoulder belt requires a Locking Clip to prevent loosening after installation, thread the locking clip on the belt as close to the latch plate as possible – within 1 inch (2.54 cm).

5.15 Upper Seat Back Removal and Installation
⚠️ WARNING: The upper seat back must be installed when the child weighs more than 22 lbs (9.98 kg) or the top of their head has reached the max height red line on the seat back, or the restraint is forward facing.
- Removal: Lift the release tab and pull up on the upper seat back. NOTE: DO NOT store the upper seat back in the passenger compartment. Store it in a secure location like your trunk or garage.
- Installation: Align the upper seat back rods with the openings and push until the seat back locks into place. Pull up on the upper seat back to ensure it is locked.

5.16 Pad Removal & Laundering
Pad Removal:
- Unfasten the 4 elastic loops on the bottom of the Convertible and the 8 snaps on the edge of the pad.
- Lift the seatback flap.
- Remove the upper seat back.
- Unfasten 4 snaps and remove the upper seat pad.
To Launder:
- Hand wash in cool water with mild detergent and hang to dry. NOTE: DO NOT machine wash or dry.

5.18 Pool Noodle or Rolled Towel Use
Extra Elevation:
- A pool noodle or rolled towel can be used for extra elevation.

EVERYONE rides buckled up or the vehicle DOES NOT GO! Make NO EXCEPTIONS for adults or children!
- Being firm and consistent with buckling rules leads to fewer discipline problems. An unrestrained person can injure others in a crash.
- NEVER try to tend to a crying child's needs while driving. Never take a child out of a child restraint for comforting while the vehicle is moving.
- DO NOT allow a child to slide down under the lap belt or put the shoulder belt under their arm or behind their back.
- DO NOT allow a child to have lollipops, popsicles, or other food on a stick, as these items can cause injury in a sudden stop or crash.
- DO NOT put heavy or sharp items in the trunk; loose items can be deadly in a crash.
- If using a blanket in cold weather, place the child in the restraint and cover both with the blanket.
6.2 Safety Checklist
Review these questions to ensure proper use:
- ✅ Did you read and understand these instructions and labels on the convertible car seat?
- ✅ Is the child the proper weight and height for the seat in the rear facing position?
- ✅ If the child is in the rear facing position, are the shoulder straps at or below the child's shoulders?
- ✅ Have you checked the proper seat angle for the rear facing position?
- ✅ If the child is over 22 lbs, have you reinstalled the head rest?
- ✅ If the top of the child's head is within 1" of the top of the head rest and the seat is rear facing, have you reinstalled the upper seat back?
- ✅ If the seat is forward facing, have you reinstalled the upper seat back?
- ✅ Is the child the proper weight and height for the seat in the forward facing position?
- ✅ If the child is in the forward facing position, are the shoulder straps at or above the child's shoulders?
- ✅ Did you pull the harness adjuster tight? You should not be able to pinch the harness if it is properly tightened.
- ✅ Is the child restraint buckled in the automobile with either the LATCH system or the auto safety belt system?
- ✅ Discontinue use of this Convertible Seat after 7 years from the date of manufacture printed on the label on the bottom of the seat.
- ✅ Has the airbag been deactivated in a vehicle with a front only seat?

7.3 Vehicle Seat Protection
Protect the vehicle seat. Use a thin car seat mat, thin towel, or thin blanket under and behind the Convertible Seat.

Store instruction manual in the pocket on the side of the Convertible Seat.
7.5 Convertible Seat Useful Life
DO NOT use this Convertible Seat after the date on the back of the seat. Parts may be missing, damaged, or the Convertible Seat may have been in a crash.

9.0 Care and Cleaning
9.1 Removing Seat Pad, Back Pad and Headrest Pad
Follow directions in section 5.12.
9.2 Cleaning Seat Pad, Head Bolster and Height Insert
- Hand wash in cool water with mild soap.
- Air dry.
9.3 Cleaning Shell
- Wipe with mild solution of soap and water. Avoid wetting labels.
- Rinse with clean water.
- Never use "household" detergents or solvents.
