1.0 General Warnings and Information

WARNING! DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur:

  • Failure to follow these instructions and Convertible Seat labels can result in injury or death to a child from striking the vehicle's interior during a sudden stop or crash.
  • Even if the Convertible Seat seems easy to use, it is important to read these instructions and the vehicle owner's manual.
  • Follow both this manual and your vehicle's owner's manual. If there is a conflict, the vehicle owner's manual takes precedence regarding seat belts, LATCH, or airbags.
  • Failure to use or properly adjust the automobile seat belt can result in serious injury or death to your child during a crash.
  • Only allow others to use this seat if they understand the instructions and can demonstrate proper use.
  • Use only Baby Trend car seat accessories. Other accessories may compromise safety.
  • DO NOT modify or attach toys, padding, or other items. Untested modifications could result in injury.
  • Secure the seat with the vehicle seat belt or LATCH bars at all times, even when unoccupied. An unsecured restraint can injure others in a crash.
  • Direct sunlight can make seat surfaces hot. Check the seat on hot, sunny days.
  • NEVER leave a child unattended.
  • DO NOT use this Convertible Seat if it has been in a crash. It may have hidden damage and must be replaced.
  • DO NOT use this Convertible Seat if it is damaged or missing parts.
  • STOP USING THIS Convertible Seat AND THROW IT AWAY after the date on the back of the seat. Do not sell it.
  • NEVER use this seat in a home, on boats, or in motor homes with side-facing seats. Only use in automobiles and aircraft.
  • NEVER use this seat in a vehicle seating position equipped with an active airbag. Consult your vehicle's manual to turn off airbags if a child must ride in the front seat. For side airbags, see section 4.1.

2.0 Use Recommendations

Children should use a child restraint with a built-in harness system until they exceed the manufacturer's specified weight or height limits.

2.1 Rear facing without the upper seatback

Weight and Height Requirements: For children whose:

  • Weight is between 5 and 22 lbs (2.3 and 10 kg), AND

  • NEVER use both LATCH lower anchors and vehicle seat belts simultaneously.

4.1 Proper Installation

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states children under 13 are safer in rear seating positions.

  1. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for car seat installation instructions.
  2. Use rear seat locations whenever possible.
  3. Follow LATCH anchor connector point maximum weight ratings.
  4. Never place the seat in a front seat unless recommended by the vehicle owner's manual.
  5. For vehicles with airbags, refer to the owner's manual for child restraint installation. If a front seat must be used, follow manufacturer instructions and move the vehicle seat back as far as possible.

Baby Trend Policy Statement on Side Airbags: Refer to your vehicle owner's manual to determine side impact airbag types. This restraint may be used in rear seating positions equipped with roof-mounted "curtain" type side impact airbags. For other types, consult your owner's manual or the automobile manufacturer.

4.2 Vehicle Seats to Avoid

DO NOT use this Convertible Seat with the following vehicle seats:

  • Seats facing SIDES of vehicle.
  • Seats facing REAR of vehicle.
  • Rear seats of small extended cab pickup trucks.

4.3 Vehicle Seat Belt Systems

Use only the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt, lap belt, or LATCH system. Seat belt systems vary by vehicle; not all are compatible. Refer to this section for information on different seat belt systems.

4.4 Vehicle Seat Belt Systems to Avoid

DO NOT use this Convertible Seat with the following vehicle seats:

  • Passive restraints with motorized shoulder belt.
  • Passive restraints with lap or shoulder belts mounted on the front door.

4.5 LATCH Lower Anchors

Consult your vehicle owner's manual or manufacturer for LATCH anchor point location and availability. Not all vehicles have the same locations or maximum weight requirements for LATCH.

Diagrams show typical Lower Anchor Point Locations.

4.6 LATCH - Top Tether Anchor Locations

Top Tether Locations are indicated by the tether symbol.

Consult your vehicle owner's manual for exact LATCH locations, anchor identification, and usage requirements.

Maximum Child Weight for LATCH: Lower Anchor 45 lbs (20.4 kg), Top Tether 65 lbs (29.5 kg).

Diagrams show various vehicle LATCH locations: Ceiling mount, Rear Package Shelf, Pick up truck, Vehicle with reinforced seats, Floor Mounts.

5.0 Installation and Use

WARNING! DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur:

  • Use only in a rear-facing position for infants weighing less than 22 lbs (9 kg).
  • Weight/Height/Age Limits:
    • Rear Facing (without upper seatback): 5 - 22 lbs.
    • Rear Facing (with upper seatback): 5 - 40 lbs (2.3 - 18.1 kg).
    • Forward Facing (1 year old minimum): 23 - 65 lbs (10.43 - 29 kg), height 50 inches (127 cm) or less.
  • Snugly adjust the harness straps. You should not be able to pinch webbing once buckled.
  • Secure the top anchorage strap.
  • Secure the seat using the vehicle's LATCH system or seat belt.
  • Follow all instructions on the seat and in this manual. Call 1-800-328-7363 for instructions if needed.
  • Use the vehicle seat belt (not LATCH) for children weighing more than 45 lbs (20.5 kg).
  • Register your child restraint with Baby Trend.
  • DO NOT place a rear-facing seat in a front seat with an active airbag.
  • NEVER leave a child unattended.

5.1 Child Placement in Restraint

  1. Place child with back flat against the seat back and bottom touching the seat.
  2. Place harness straps over the child's shoulders. Check strap height relative to shoulders.
  3. For rear facing, place 5-point crotch buckle in the rear position. For forward facing, place in the forward position.
  4. Insert buckle tongues into the buckle. Pull up to ensure they are secure.
  5. Place chest clip at armpit level. Press tabs together. Pull outward to ensure it is secure.
  6. Pull the harness adjuster to tighten straps. A snug strap should not allow slack and should lie straight without sagging.

Diagrams illustrate routing paths for forward-facing installation (lap belt with top tether, lap/shoulder belt with top tether, LATCH lower anchor with top tether) and child placement steps.

5.2 Rear Facing Installation with Lap/Shoulder Belt

Requirements: See section 2.1 (Weight 5-22 lbs, top of head not at max height line).

Diagrams show routing paths for rear-facing installation with or without headrest, using lap belt, lap/shoulder belt, or lower anchor.

WARNING: Never use a Top Tether connector in a rear-facing installation!

The seat was designed with a removable upper seatback for proper installation when it contacts the front seat. If contact prevents a 45-degree installation, remove the upper seatback. Refer to section 5.13 for removal instructions.

Reinstall the upper seat back when the child reaches 22 lbs (9.98 kg), or the top of their head has NOT reached the max height red line. Keep the child rear-facing as long as possible. Contact Baby Trend Customer Service at 1-800-328-7363 for questions.

Installation Steps (with Headrest):

  1. Adjust the recline foot to the recline position. This angles the restraint to keep the baby's head back and airway open.
  2. Place restraint in a rear seating position and ensure the vehicle is level.
  3. Unsnap the 2 front and 2 side snaps. Lift and fold back padding.
  4. Route lap/shoulder belt through the rear-facing safety belt path. Ensure webbing is flat and not twisted.
  5. Apply weight to the seat cushion, insert the buckle tongue, and pull the seat belt tight. Pull up on the buckle to ensure security.
  6. Lower flap and secure hook-and-loop fasteners and snaps.
  7. Ensure the angle indicator line is level with the ground to keep the child's airway open.
  8. Check for restraint movement at the belt path. It should not move more than 1 inch in any direction. Repeat steps if necessary.

5.3 Rear Facing Installation with Lap Belt
