Baby Trend Trooper™ PLUS 3-in-1 Convertible Car Seat

Owner's Manual

Important Safety Information

AWARNING!

Failure to properly use this Car Seat increases the risk of SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH in a sudden stop or crash. Carefully read and understand all instructions and warnings in this manual. Keep these instructions for future use. Store this manual in the pocket provided on the side of the car seat base.

For instructions in Spanish, visit www.babytrend.com or call 1-800-328-7363.

General Warnings:

  • Failure to follow instructions and car seat labels can result in injury or death.
  • Always follow this manual and your vehicle owner's manual. If there's a conflict, the vehicle owner's manual takes precedence for seat belt, LATCH, or airbag information.
  • Improper use or adjustment of the vehicle seat belt can cause serious injury or death.
  • Ensure anyone using the car seat reads and understands the instructions and labels.
  • Use only Baby Trend® approved car seat accessories.
  • Do not modify or attach toys or other items to the car seat; untested modifications can cause injury.
  • Secure the car seat with the vehicle seat belt or LATCH connectors at all times, even without a child.
  • Be cautious of direct sunlight making car seat surfaces hot.
  • Never leave a child unattended.
  • Do not use the car seat if it has been in a crash or is damaged or missing parts.
  • Stop using the car seat after the expiration date printed on the seat and dispose of it properly.
  • Never use the car seat in the home, on boats, in motor homes with side-facing seats, low-speed vehicles, golf carts, or all-terrain vehicles. Use only in vehicles and aircraft.
  • Never use the car seat in a seating position with an active frontal airbag. Refer to your vehicle's manual for airbag deactivation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends children remain rear-facing until they reach the car seat's height or weight limit, typically up to age 3.

Use Recommendations

Baby Trend and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend children remain rear-facing as long as possible, up to the seat's limits.

Rear-Facing Seat Requirements:

  • Weight: 4 to 40 lbs (1.81 to 18.1 kg)
  • Height: 40 inches (102 cm) or less
  • Top of head must NOT be 1 inch from the top of the seatback.

Child must meet ALL rear-facing requirements.

Forward-Facing Seat Requirements:

  • Weight: 30 to 65 lbs (13.6 to 29.5 kg)
  • Height: 50 inches (127 cm) or less
  • Age: 2 years old
  • Top of child's ears must be at or below the top of the car seat.

Child must meet ALL forward-facing requirements. Baby Trend recommends remaining rear-facing as long as possible and until at least 2 years of age. Use of the top tether is required for installation if the vehicle is equipped with a tether anchor.

Car Seat Parts

Key components include: Canopy, Head Pillow, Harness, Body Insert, Webbing Twist Indicator Stripe, Cup Holders, Harness Tension Adjuster, Lower Anchor Connectors, Harness Covers, Seat Pad, Chest Clip, 5-point Harness Buckle, Top Tether, Splitter Plate, Flip Foot, Rear Facing Recline Indicator, Lower Anchor Storage, Canopy Mount, Forward Facing Belt Path, and Rear Facing Belt Path.

Selecting a Vehicle Seating Location

AWARNING!

Improper placement increases the risk of SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

  • Not all vehicle locations are safe. The car seat must be tightly secured at all times.
  • Children are safer in rear seating positions.
  • Recommended Location: Rear center seating position, not in a third-row rear seat.
  • Forward-Facing Only: Do not place the car seat in a rear-facing vehicle seat or a seat facing sideways.
  • An adult should ride in the rear with the child if possible.
  • LATCH System: May not be available in the center rear position; use a vehicle seat belt if LATCH is not available.
  • Front Seat Use: Only if no passenger side Active Frontal Airbag and other specific conditions are met.
  • Seatback Requirements: Ensure the vehicle seatback locks into place and does not fold forward.
  • Vehicle Seat Belt Systems: Review your vehicle owner's manual to ensure compatibility. Some systems are not safe for use with the car seat.
  • Unsafe Systems: Avoid lap belts with Emergency Locking Retractors (ELR) that only lock during a crash, and lap/shoulder belts where both the lap and shoulder belts have retractors at one end. Passive restraints connected to doors or motorized shoulder belts are also unsafe. Lap belts anchored too far forward are unsafe.
  • Locking Clip: May be required for certain seat belt systems. Contact Baby Trend for an approved locking clip.
  • Preparation: Park on a level surface. Ensure the Seat Angle Indicator is properly positioned. Check for active frontal airbags. If using a front seat, slide the vehicle seat back as far as possible.
  • LATCH Anchor Locations: Consult your vehicle owner's manual for specific locations and weight requirements. Maximum child weight for LATCH: Lower Anchor 55 lbs (24.94 kg), Top Tether 65 lbs (29.48 kg).

Installation and Use

General Use:

  • Use rear-facing for infants under 30 lbs (13.6 kg).
  • Use for children weighing 4-65 lbs (1.81-29.48 kg) and height up to 50 inches (127 cm). Forward-facing requires age 2 years.
  • Adjust harness straps snugly: you should not be able to pinch webbing.
  • Secure the top anchorage strap.
  • Use LATCH or vehicle seat belt for installation.
  • Use vehicle seat belt (not LATCH) for children over 55 lbs (24.9 kg).
  • Register your car seat with Baby Trend.
  • Never leave a child unattended.

Child Placement in Car Seat:

Place child with back flat against the seat. Place harness straps over shoulders. Check harness height relative to shoulders. Adjust crotch buckle and buckle tongues. Place chest clip at armpit level. Tighten harness adjuster until snug (no slack). Harness covers are generally required, except for Low Birth Weight routing.

Shoulder Height Adjustment:

Rear-facing: Positions 1, 2, 3. Forward-facing: Positions 3, 4, 5. Loosen harness, unfasten ends from splitter plate, thread through desired shoulder position, and re-fasten.

Crotch Buckle Adjustment:

Ensure a 1/2" to 1" gap between the buckle ears and the child's thigh. Adjust buckle webbing length by moving the anchor bracket.

Seat Fabric Removal and Laundering:

Unfasten harness, unbuckle crotch buckle and chest clip. Feed harness and buckles through seat fabric slots. Fabric can be cleaned with mild soap and warm water; do not machine wash, dry clean, bleach, or iron.

Low Birth Weight Harness Shortening Routing:

Specific routing steps are provided for low birth weight infants, involving threading harness loops through different slots and ensuring equalized length. Do not use harness covers or pillows with this routing.

Pillow, Insert, and Harness Covers Use:

Pillow use is optional and not for Low Birth Weight routing. Inserts are optional but may be used for Low Birth Weight routing for infants 4-18 lbs (1.81-8.16 kg) rear-facing only. Harness covers must be used in all modes except Low Birth Weight routing.

Harness Hip and Buckle Use Positions:

Crotch buckle positions 1 and 2 are for rear and forward facing. Harness hip positions are 1 (Low Birth Weight routing only), 2 (up to 40 lbs), and 3 (above 40 lbs). Ensure harness is at or out from the hip, not under.

Cup Holder Removal, Installation, and Cleaning:

Cup holders can be removed by pressing a tab. Install by aligning and pressing into place. Clean with mild soap and water.

Securing Pillow:

Insert pillow straps through shoulder belt positions and secure with hook and loop fasteners.

Pool Noodle or Rolled Towel Use:

Can be used for extra elevation by placing between the seat bottom and back for recline adjustment.

Canopy Use Positions:

Canopy is optional. Discontinue use when harness is at the top slot (#5). Use only in position 1 for forward-facing. Always secure canopy with lanyard.

Canopy Installation and Removal:

Push blue tab completely into canopy mount slot on both sides to install. Lift tab to remove.

Aircraft Installation:

Follow seat belt installation for aircraft use. Consult airline for requirements.
