Descriptions
CY-14R-T (Diameter: 14 inches)
This is a 14-inch V-Cymbal pad. It features distinct zones for triggering:Diagram shows a circular pad with labels: "Bell" (center), "Bow" (main surface), "Edge" (outer rim). It has two output jacks: "BELL OUTPUT jack" and "BOW/EDGE OUTPUT jack". An "Edge sensor" is indicated along the edge.
CY-12C-T (Diameter: 12 inches)
This is a 12-inch V-Cymbal pad. It features distinct zones for triggering:Diagram shows a circular pad with labels: "Bow" (main surface), "Edge" (outer rim). It has one output jack: "BOW/EDGE OUTPUT jack". An "Edge sensor" is indicated along the edge.
Important Note on Edge Sensor:
If you remove the CY-14R-T/CY-12C-T: Do not place or store the unit in a location where an object might contact the edge sensor, or where pressure might be applied to the edge sensor. Such conditions will cause malfunctions.
Making the Settings
Mounting on the Stand
- Use a commercially available drum key to tighten the stopper bolt.Diagram shows a bolt being tightened with a drum key. The stopper is attached to a cymbal stand arm, positioned so the bolt is on the right-hand side from the performer's perspective. This stopper prevents the V-Cymbal from turning and tangling cables.
Note: This step is not necessary if using a Roland-made stand equipped with a stopper. - Attach the V-Cymbal, while positioning it so the Roland logo is located on the side opposite the performer.Diagram shows the cymbal pad being mounted. It indicates the use of a "Cymbal nut" and "Felt washer" to secure the cymbal. The Roland logo should face away from the player.
- Tighten the included felt washer and the cymbal nut to obtain the desired movement.
Note: If your Roland-made stand includes its own felt washer and cymbal nut, use those instead of the ones supplied with the V-Cymbal. Double sounding may occur if the cymbal nut is loose. - Secure the cables in place with the cable tie, and leave some slack in the cables to ensure they are not pulled by the movement of the V-Cymbal pads.Diagrams illustrate cable management: a small plastic hook is made visible, a cable tie is wound around a cable and then around the cymbal arm pipe and tightened. The plastic hook is inserted into a hole to secure the cable to the cymbal arm. Leave some slack in the cable.
Caution: Ensure cables do not touch the V-Cymbal pads or the stand, as this may cause double sounding or other incorrect operation.
Connecting to a Drum Sound Module
Using the included connection cable, connect the V-Cymbal to the drum sound module.
Note: Use the supplied stereo connection cables. If mono cables are used, edge shots, bell shots, and choke play cannot be supported.
Connect the L-shaped plug of the included cable to the V-Cymbal pad.
Connecting the CY-14R-T as Ride:
Connect the "BELL OUTPUT jack" and "BOW/EDGE OUTPUT jack" to the drum sound module's "BELL" and "RIDE" inputs, respectively.Diagram shows a stereo cable from the CY-14R-T's "BELL OUTPUT jack" connecting to a module's "BELL" input, and another cable from the "BOW/EDGE OUTPUT jack" connecting to a module's "RIDE" input.
Connecting the CY-12C-T as Crash:
Connect the "BOW/EDGE OUTPUT jack" to the drum sound module's "CRASH" input.Diagram shows a stereo cable from the CY-12C-T's "BOW/EDGE OUTPUT jack" connecting to a module's "CRASH" input.
Cable Connection Examples for Roland Modules:
- RD cable: To RIDE jack: TD-50, TD-50X, TD-30; To EDGE jack: TD-30
- RDB cable: To RIDE jack: TD-30, TD-11, TD-15, TD-17, TD-25, TD-27; To BELL jack: TD-50, TD-50X
- CR1 cable: To CRASH 2 jack: TD-07, TD-11, TD-15, TD-17, TD-25, TD-27; To CRASH 1, 2 jacks: TD-30, TD-50, TD-50X
Playing Method
The response to various playing methods depends on the drum sound module. For details, refer to the owner's manual of your drum sound module.
Bow shot
This is the technique of striking the bow (main surface). It corresponds to the sound of the "head-side" of the connected trigger input. Nuance changes depending on the strike location.Diagram illustrates striking the main surface of the cymbal. A note indicates that strike location information is received only when plugged into specified inputs on Roland sound modules (like TD-27) capable of positional detection.
Bell shot (CY-14R-T only)
Bell shots are possible when the connection is made to the BELL output. This is the technique of striking the bell area. Striking the bell area will produce the bell sound of the connected trigger input.Diagram illustrates striking the center bell area of the cymbal.
Edge shot
This playing method involves striking the edge with the shoulder of the stick. When played as shown in the figure, the rim sound of the connected input is triggered.Diagram illustrates striking the outer edge of the cymbal.
Choke Play
Choking (pinching) the cymbal's edge with the hand immediately after hitting the cymbal makes the sound stop. Choke the location of the edge sensor shown in the figure. If you choke an area where there is no sensor, the sound does not stop.Diagram illustrates pinching the edge of the cymbal with a hand to stop the sound. The location of the edge sensor is highlighted.
About three-way triggering (CY-14R-T only)
The CY-14R-T can take advantage of your percussion sound module's three-way triggering functionality to allow you to play bow, bell, and edge sounds separately.
Connect the two outputs, BOW/BELL and BOW/EDGE, to the drum sound module at the same time. For details on the connection method and settings, refer to the owner's manual for your drum sound module.
Note: If you won't be using the three-way triggering functionality, connect only the BOW/EDGE OUTPUT jack to your drum sound module.
Recommended Parameter Settings
These are the recommended values for the trigger parameters when using the CY-14R-T/CY-12C-T with various drum sound modules.
If the "PAD TYPE" or "TRIG TYPE" of your drum sound module provides a "CY14RT" or "CY12CT" setting, choose either of those settings. If "CY14RT" or "CY12CT" is not one of the available values, refer to the support information on the Roland website: http://roland.cm/trigger_prm
You may need to adjust the trigger parameters depending on how you've mounted the CY-14R-T/CY-12C-T and the location at which you've installed it. For details on editing, refer to the owner's manual of your drum sound module.
