Assembling the KD-180L
Note: Be careful not to pinch your hand or foot with the drum's weight during assembly.
- Attach the Rod: Loosen the rod lock knob, attach the rod, ensuring the memory lock contacts the bracket. Tighten the rod lock knob. The factory-set memory lock position is recommended for optimal rod length and angle.
- Position the Batter Head: Turn the batter head to the approximate position shown in the illustration. (Guideline: Do not turn excessively, approximately ±30 degrees to avoid damaging the interior.)
- Place the Batter Hoop: Reattach the batter hoop.
- Tighten Tension Bolts (Initial): Working alternately across opposite sides, lightly tighten each tension bolt until the batter hoop no longer wobbles.
- Adjust Head Tension: To vary the strike response, adjust the batter head tension. Tighten each tension bolt little by little, working back and forth across the head in the order shown (1-6). Ensure the head is tensioned evenly. (Note: Uneven tensioning can lead to incorrect strike response or malfunctions.)
- Adjust Foot Tips: Adjust the rod tips (spike/rubber) based on the surface. For soft floors (carpet), use rubber tips. For hard floors (wood, concrete), use the spike tips. Loosen the foot nut to expose the spike; tighten to secure. (Caution: Spike tips are sharp. Using spike tips on wood flooring may cause damage; use rubber tips instead.)
- Attach Kick Pedal: Attach the kick pedal to the designated gap in the batter hoop. Align the beater to strike the center of the batter head's strike surface and securely fasten the pedal. (Caution: Take care not to pinch fingers.)
Using Double Kick Pedals
For double kick pedals, adjust the beaters to strike the batter head at equal distances from the center.
Adjusting Beater Strike Position
If the beater strike point cannot be aligned appropriately, or if using double pedals results in asymmetrical striking points:
- Remove tension bolts and batter hoop.
- Adjust the position of the batter head's strike surface.

Note: Adjust tuning bolts evenly so the head does not sag. Ensure tuning bolts are not loose.
- Adjust each tuning bolt little by little, across the head in the indicated order (1-6).
- Adjust the tightness of each tuning bolt so that the head is tensioned evenly. (Note: Fully tightening one bolt can cause uneven tensioning and malfunctions.)
Memo: Head tension does not affect the sound's tuning; use the drum sound module for that. Adjust tension as needed due to usage changes.
Replacing the Head or Hoop Rubber
Replace the head or hoop rubber if worn or damaged. Contact your dealer or a Roland service center for replacements.
Replacing the Head
Note: Applying excessive force to sensors under the head can cause damage or inaccurate triggering.
- Remove all tuning bolts.
- Remove the hoop and old head.
- Place the new head and hoop on the shell.
- Install all six tuning bolts.
- Adjust the head tension evenly.
Playing Methods
- Head Shot: Strike the center of the pad's head.

Making the Settings
Mounting on the Stand
- Tighten Stopper Bolt: Use a drum key to tighten the stopper bolt, which prevents the cymbal from turning and tangling cables. Position the bolt on the right side from the performer's perspective.
- Attach V-Cymbal: Position the V-Cymbal so the Roland logo is opposite the playing area.
- Tighten Felt Washer and Wing Nut: Secure the felt washer and wing nut to achieve desired movement. Ensure they are not loose to prevent double sounding.
- Secure Cables: Use the cable tie to secure cables, leaving some slack to allow for cymbal movement. Ensure the small plastic hook is visible. Take care that cables do not touch the cymbal or stand, which could cause double sounding.
Connecting to a Percussion Sound Module
Use the supplied stereo connection cables. Monaural cables will not support edge shots, bell shots, or choke play.
- Connect the L-shaped plug to the CY-13R/12C's output jack.
- For the CY-12C, connect to the BOW/EDGE OUTPUT jack.
- For the CY-13R, connect to the BELL OUTPUT jack and BOW/EDGE OUTPUT jack for three-way triggering (bow, bell, edge). If not using three-way triggering, connect only the BOW/EDGE OUTPUT jack.
Note: Turn down volume and power off all units before connecting.
About Three-Way Triggering (CY-13R Only)
The CY-13R supports three-way triggering (bow, bell, edge) when connected to compatible sound modules. Connect both BOW/BELL and BOW/EDGE outputs. Refer to your sound module's manual for specific settings.
Playing Methods
- Bow Shot: Strike the middle area of the cymbal (head-side sound).
- Bell Shot (CY-13R Only): Strike the bell firmly with the shoulder of the stick (rim-side sound). Bell shots are supported when connected to the BELL output. Not supported on CY-12C.
- Edge Shot: Strike the edge with the shoulder of the stick (rim-side sound). Supported on CY-13R via BOW/EDGE output.
- Choke Play: Pinch the cymbal's edge with your hand immediately after hitting to stop the sound. Choke the area of the edge sensor. If choking an area without a sensor, the sound will not stop. Choke function does not work when using only the BELL output of the CY-13R.
Trigger Parameter Settings for Percussion Sound Modules
Recommended trigger parameter settings for V-Cymbals with various Roland sound modules:
- TD series, SPD-30, SPD-SX, HPD-20: For Trig Type, select 'CY12C' for CY-12C and 'CY13R' for CY-13R.
- HPD-10: For Type, select 'CY-12/14' for CY-12C and 'CY-13R' for CY-13R.

Safety and Important Notes
This section provides general safety guidelines and important notes for all Roland drum components.
Safety Warnings
- WARNING: Do not disassemble, modify, repair, or replace parts yourself. Contact authorized service centers. Avoid extreme temperatures, humidity, dust, and unstable locations. Protect from strong impact. Keep children supervised.
- CAUTION: Prevent cords from becoming entangled and keep them out of reach of children. Do not climb on or place heavy objects on the unit. Keep small parts away from children.
Important Notes
- Placement: Avoid direct sunlight, heat sources, enclosed vehicles, and extreme temperatures. Allow units to acclimatize to ambient temperature/humidity to prevent condensation damage. Do not leave rubber/vinyl materials on the unit for extended periods.
- Maintenance: Clean with a soft, dry cloth. Use a slightly damp cloth or mild detergent for stubborn dirt, then wipe dry. Never use solvents like benzine, thinners, or alcohol.
- Additional Precautions: Handle output jacks with care. When connecting/disconnecting cables, grasp the connector, not the cable. Keep volume at reasonable levels or use headphones to avoid disturbing neighbors. Be mindful of sound vibrations transmitted through floors/walls. Package units properly for transport. The preservative on striking surfaces may appear as a white stain but does not affect performance. Continuous playing may cause pad discoloration, which also does not affect function.
