Intended Use
The Vicks Non-Contact Infrared Body Thermometer is designed for consumers in home environments (e.g., home settings) and for employee screening in business settings. It is not intended for use in healthcare facilities. The device has been reviewed and certified by the manufacturer's notified body for body mode measurements.
Safety Information
This device should only be used as described in these instructions. The manufacturer is not liable for damages resulting from incorrect use.
Important Safety Instructions:
- DO NOT operate the HTD8813 thermometer without fully reading and understanding these instructions.
- Keep out of reach of children under 12 years.
- NEVER use the thermometer for purposes other than intended. Follow general safety precautions when using on children.
- NEVER immerse the thermometer in water or other liquids as it is not waterproof. Refer to the “Care and Cleaning” section for cleaning instructions.
- DO NOT store the thermometer in temperatures below -20°C (-4°F) or above 55°C (131°F), or in humidity above 93% (non-condensing relative humidity).
- Allow the thermometer and the person being measured to acclimate to the room temperature for 30 minutes before taking a measurement. The room temperature should be between 15°C (59°F) and 40°C (104°F).
- The person being measured should be indoors for 20 minutes before measurement, as external temperature can affect skin temperature readings.
- If ambient acclimation guidance cannot be followed (e.g., during screening), readings may shift. Compare individuals against each other and re-measure anyone reading 0.8°C (1.5°F) higher or lower than normal after acclimation.
- DO NOT use the thermometer if there are signs of damage. Do not attempt to repair it.
- NEVER insert sharp objects into the scanner area or any other openings.
- Protect the thermometer from severe impact and shock. DO NOT touch the infrared sensor with your fingers.
- This thermometer is not a substitute for professional medical consultation.
- Elevated temperatures may indicate serious illness, especially in neonates, infants, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems. Seek professional advice immediately for elevated temperatures, particularly when measuring:
- Neonates and infants under 3 months (Consult physician if temperature exceeds 37.4°C / 99.4°F).
- Individuals over 60 years old.
- Individuals with diabetes or weakened immune systems (e.g., HIV positive, undergoing chemotherapy, chronic immunosuppressant treatment, splenectomy).
- Individuals who are bedridden (e.g., nursing home patients, stroke recovery, chronic illness, paraplegia, quadriplegia, surgical recovery).
- Transplant recipients (e.g., liver, heart, lung, kidney).
- This thermometer is not intended for pre-term babies (born before 37 weeks of pregnancy) or small-for-gestational-age babies (born at 37 weeks or later with a weight below the 10th percentile for their gestational age).
- This thermometer is not intended to interpret hypothermic temperatures. If the device displays 35.6°C (96.1°F) or less without LED backlight, and the individual shows atypical symptoms, contact a physician.
- DO NOT allow children to take their temperatures unattended.
- Consult a physician if symptoms like unexplained irritability, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, changes in appetite or activity, seizure, muscle pain, shivering, stiff neck, or pain during urination occur, even without a fever.
- Individuals with normal temperatures may still require medical attention. Those on antibiotics, analgesics, or antipyretics should not be assessed solely on temperature readings.
- DO NOT modify the equipment without manufacturer authorization.
- DO NOT throw batteries into fire. Use only recommended batteries. DO NOT use rechargeable batteries.
- For forehead temperature, select “body” mode. For objects or liquids, select “surface” mode.
Overview
Device Principle and Introduction
The Vicks Non-Contact Infrared Body Thermometer is a handheld, reusable, battery-operated device that measures human body temperature using the forehead. It utilizes Infrared (IR) Sensor technology to acquire infrared energy from the forehead. Considering ambient temperature, the thermometer converts the IR sensor signal into a digital value displayed on the LCD.

Remove the battery from the instrument if it is not required for extended periods of time in order to avoid damage to the thermometer resulting from a leaking battery.
Operation
Battery Installation
CAUTION: The Non Contact Infrared Body Thermometer does not operate with dead batteries and does not input outer power. Install new batteries.
- Pull the battery door out in the direction of the arrow and then lift up to access the battery compartment.
- Insert two AAA size batteries according to the “+” and “-”.
- Close the battery cover.
How to Operate
Before Applying the Thermometer
Be sure to read and understand all warnings listed on the instructions before use.
- Align the thermometer with the middle of the forehead (between and directly above the eyebrows) to measure body temperature at a vertical distance. Press the On (Trigger) button, and the temperature will display immediately.
- Position the thermometer 1-5 cm (0.4-2.0 inches) from the center of the forehead. Ensure the eyebrow area is clear of hair, sweat, or dirt for accurate readings.
- Allow the thermometer to remain in the room where it will be used for 30 minutes. The room temperature should be between 15°C and 40°C (59°F and 104°F).
- The ambient temperature around the test person should be stable. DO NOT take measurements near airflow from fans or air-conditioning vents.
- If people move from a cooler to a warmer environment, they should remain in the test environment for at least 5 minutes before measurement.
- If ambient acclimation guidance cannot be followed, readings may shift. Compare individuals and re-measure those with readings 0.8°C (1.5°F) higher or lower than normal after acclimation.
- Wait at least 1 second between measurements. For continuous measurements, wait at least 30 seconds after five consecutive readings.
- DO NOT use the thermometer in direct sunlight.
General Setup and Use
Start Measuring
Align the device to the forehead at a distance of 1-5cm (0.4-2.0 inches), then press the On (Trigger) button to start the measurement. The thermometer will perform a self-test with all segments displayed for 2 seconds.
Note:
- After the full display, a single “beep” indicates a normal temperature, while 4 “double beeps” indicate an elevated temperature. The measured temperature is displayed on the LCD. The backlight indicates:
- Green: Ready for next measurement.
- Yellow: 37.4°C - 38.4°C (99.3°F - 101.1°F) - Slight fever warning.
- Red: Above 38.4°C (101.1°F) - High fever. Seek medical attention. - To ensure accuracy, wait at least 30 seconds after 5 consecutive measurements.
Mode Conversion
When the device is on, press the MODE button to switch between “body” mode (for human body temperature) and “surface” mode (for surface temperature). The factory default is “body” mode.
Recalling and Erasing Memory Data
The last temperature taken before power off is stored in memory (up to 50 readings).
- When the thermometer is on or off, press the MEMO button to view past measurements.
- An empty memory cell shows “----°C” or “----°F”.
- Temperature readings are stored and automatically overwrite historical data. Up to 50 readings can be stored.
- While the thermometer is on, press the MEMO button until “CLR” is displayed to clear all stored data.
Changing the Temperature Scale – F1
Turn the thermometer on, press and hold the SET button to enter F1. Use the MODE or MEMO button to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit. Press the trigger to confirm.
Turning the Sound On/Off
While the thermometer is on, press the SET button to toggle the prompt sound on or off.
Advanced Settings (For Professionals)
Warning: These settings are intended for professional use. It is recommended to keep the thermometer at its original factory settings.
- Fever Alert Set – F2: Adjusts the temperature at which the backlight turns red. Press SET to enter F2 after F1. Use MODE to decrease by 0.1°C (0.2°F) or MEMO to increase by 0.1°C (0.2°F). Press SET to save. The factory default and recommended setting is 38.5°C (101.2°F).
- Sound Settings – F3: Changes the buzzer on/off. While in Fever Alert Setting (F2), press SET to enter F3. Use MODE or MEMO to turn the volume on or off. Press SET to save. This can also be adjusted via “Turning the Sound On/Off”.
Factory Reset
To restore factory settings, turn the thermometer on and press and hold the MODE button until “rst” is displayed. Settings will be restored after 2 seconds.
Troubleshooting

Replacing the Battery
- Open and release the battery cover following the indicator on its surface. Ensure the system is powered off before changing the battery.
- Remove the old batteries and replace with 2 new AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
- Slide the battery cover back until it snaps into place.
Do not dispose of used batteries in household waste. Take them to special local collection sites. If the system latches up after changing the battery, remove the batteries again, wait 30 seconds, then reload them.
Dispose of empty batteries at your retail store or appropriate collection sites according to national or local regulations. WARNING: DO NOT recharge, disassemble, or dispose of batteries in fire.
The typical service life of new batteries is 2000 measurements (based on 18s operation time per measurement). Use only recommended batteries; do not use rechargeable batteries or incinerate them. Remove batteries if the thermometer will not be used for a long period.
Cleaning, Care and Storage
- The lens is delicate. Protect it from dirt and damage.
- Use a clean, soft cloth to clean the device surface and LCD. Do not use solvents or immerse the device in water or other liquids.
- Always keep the thermometer within the storage temperature range of -20°C to 55°C (-4°F to 131°F) and humidity range (≤93% non-condensing).
- Store the thermometer in a dry, dust-free location. Avoid direct sunlight, high temperatures/humidity, or extreme environments, as this may reduce functionality.
- When moving the thermometer between environments with significantly different temperatures, allow it to acclimate in a room at 15°C to 40°C (59°F- 104°F) for 30 minutes.
Disposal
- Used batteries should not be disposed of in household rubbish. Deposit used batteries at a collection point.
- At the end of its life, the appliance should not be disposed of in household rubbish. Enquire about environmentally friendly disposal options and take local regulations into account.
Warranty
Read all instructions before use. This product is manufactured with care for normal household use. Following directions ensures dependable operation. If dissatisfied for any reason (other than misuse or normal battery operation), Vicks will repair or replace the thermometer at their option, free of charge, within the 2-year warranty period. Modifications by the consumer void the warranty.
If the thermometer malfunctions, check the battery first. Replace if necessary. Batteries and packaging are excluded from the warranty.
For unsatisfactory operation or warranty repairs, contact Felton Grimwade & Bosisto's. Return the product with proof of purchase to their service center. The purchaser is responsible for proper care and use according to the manual. Keep the operation manual for safe and efficient use.
Goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law, including entitlement to replacement or refund for major failure and compensation for reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. Goods are also entitled to repair or replacement if they fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.
Calibration
The thermometer is initially calibrated at the time of manufacture. Periodic re-adjustment is not required if used according to instructions. If you question the accuracy of measurements, please contact Vicks.
