Exercise Guidelines
WARNING: Consult your physician before beginning any exercise program, especially if over 35 or with pre-existing health problems.
These guidelines help plan your exercise program. Proper nutrition and rest are essential.
Exercise Intensity
Use heart rate to guide intensity for fat burning or cardiovascular strengthening. The chart shows recommended heart rates based on age.
Find your age at the bottom of the chart. The three numbers above your age define your "training zone": lowest for fat burning, middle for maximum fat burning, highest for aerobic exercise.
Burning Fat: Exercise at low intensity for sustained periods. Body uses fat calories after initial carbohydrate use. Aim for the lowest number in your training zone for fat burning, middle for maximum fat burning.
Aerobic Exercise: For cardiovascular health, perform aerobic exercise. Adjust intensity to reach the highest number in your training zone.
How to Measure Your Heart Rate
Exercise for at least four minutes. Stop, place two fingers on your wrist, take a six-second heartbeat count, and multiply by 10. (e.g., 14 beats x 10 = 140 bpm).
Workout Guidelines
- Warming Up: 5-10 minutes of stretching and light exercise to increase body temperature, heart rate, and circulation.
- Training Zone Exercise: 20-30 minutes in your training zone. (Limit to 20 minutes in the first few weeks). Breathe regularly.
- Cooling Down: 5-10 minutes of stretching to improve flexibility and prevent post-exercise issues.
Exercise Frequency
For maintenance or improvement, work out three times per week with rest days. After a few months, up to five workouts per week may be desired. Make exercise a regular, enjoyable part of life.
