The Chest Heart Rate Monitor
How to Put On the Heart Rate Monitor
The monitor consists of a chest strap and a sensor. Insert the strap tab into the sensor hole, then secure the sensor under the buckle. The tab should be flush with the sensor front.
Wear the monitor under clothes, tight against the skin. Wrap it around the chest, ensuring the logo faces up. Adjust strap length as needed.
Wet the two electrode areas (covered by shallow ridges) with saline solution, saliva, or contact lens solution before placing the sensor against your chest.
Care and Maintenance
- Dry the sensor thoroughly after each use to prevent battery drain.
- Store the monitor in a warm, dry place, not in a plastic bag.
- Avoid direct sunlight and temperatures above 122°F (50°C) or below 14°F (-10°C).
- Do not excessively bend or stretch the sensor.
- Clean the sensor with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry thoroughly. Never use alcohol, abrasives, or chemicals. Hand wash and air dry the chest strap.
Troubleshooting
- Ensure the monitor is worn correctly. Adjust position slightly if needed.
- Rewet electrode areas if readings only appear after perspiring.
- The console must be within arm's length for readings.
- Replace the sensor battery if a battery cover is present.
- Heart rate reading problems may be caused by medical conditions (e.g., PVCs, tachycardia, arrhythmia).
- Magnetic interference from power lines can affect operation; try relocating the equipment.
Operation and Adjustment
How to Connect the Power Cord
Use a Surge Suppressor
To protect against voltage surges, always use a surge suppressor with the treadmill. Use a UL 1449 listed suppressor with a 400V or less rating, 450 joules minimum dissipation, and rated for 120V AC/15 amps. It must have a functioning monitoring light. Failure to do so may damage the control system and cause injury.
Plug in the Power Cord
⚠️ WARNING: Improper connection increases electric shock risk. Do not modify the plug. If it doesn't fit, have a qualified electrician install a proper outlet. Contact a qualified electrician if unsure about grounding.
Plug the power cord into the surge suppressor, and the suppressor into a properly installed and grounded outlet. The outlet must be on a nominal 120-volt circuit (15 amps). Avoid plugging other devices (except low-power ones like phone chargers) into the same circuit or suppressor. The treadmill is not compatible with GFCI or AFCI outlets.
A temporary adapter can be used for 2-pole receptacles if a grounded outlet is unavailable. Connect the adapter's lug/wire to a permanent ground (e.g., a grounded outlet box cover) using a metal screw. Consult an electrician to verify grounding before using an adapter.
