How to Change Engine Oil and Filter on TOYOTA Starlet V Hatchback (P90) – Replacement Guide

The steps may slightly vary depending on the car design.

This tutorial was created based on the replacement procedure for a similar car part on: TOYOTA Aygo (AB10) 1.

Tools Required for Engine Oil and Filter Replacement

An arrangement of tools including an orange cleaning spray bottle, an oil filter cup socket, an impact socket, a ratchet wrench, a torque wrench, an oil drain pan, a funnel, and a fender cover.

  • All-purpose cleaning spray
  • Oil filter cup socket 76/14-F
  • Impact socket №15
  • Ratchet wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Oil drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Fender cover

AUTODOC Recommendations

  • Replace the oil filter every time when changing motor oil.
  • All work on the car TOYOTA Starlet V Hatchback (P90) should be done with the engine switched off.
  • Wear gloves to prevent contact with hot liquid.

Replacement Procedure

  1. Open the hood.

  2. Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.

  3. Unscrew the oil filler plug.

  4. Lift the car using a jack or place it over an inspection pit.

    Tip from AUTODOC Experts:

    The vehicle must be on an even keel. If it is at an angle, the drain plug must be at the lowest point.

    All work should be done with the engine stopped.

  5. Put a waste oil container with at least 4 L capacity under the drainage hole.

    A waste oil container is placed under the car's engine to collect used oil.

  6. Unscrew the drain plug. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.

    A ratchet wrench with socket #15 is used to unscrew the oil drain plug.

  7. Drain the used oil.

    Used engine oil drains from the oil pan into the waste oil container.

    Tip from AUTODOC:

    Caution! The oil may be hot.

    Wait until the oil has completely drained from the drainage hole.

  8. Move the container under the oil filter.

    The waste oil container is moved to be directly under the oil filter.

  9. Unscrew the oil filter. Use the 76/14-F socket.

    An oil filter wrench is used to unscrew the old oil filter.

  10. Prepare a container for the old oil filter. Put the old oil filter in the container.

    The old oil filter is placed into a container to catch residual oil.

    Tip:

    The oil starts to drain out of the drainage hole immediately after you have removed the oil filter. Be prepared to move the container.

  11. Clean the oil filter seat.

    The mounting surface for the oil filter on the engine is cleaned.

  12. Lubricate the rubber seal of the new filter with a little amount of fresh oil.

    Fresh engine oil is applied to the rubber seal of the new oil filter.

  13. Screw the new filter into its place. Use the 76/14-F socket. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 23 Nm torque.

    The new oil filter is screwed into place and tightened to 23 Nm using a torque wrench.

  14. Clean the area of the oil pan drainage hole.

    The area around the oil pan's drain plug hole is cleaned.

  15. Screw in the new drainage plug and tighten it. Use a drive socket #15. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 27 Nm torque.

    The new oil drain plug is screwed in and tightened to 27 Nm using a torque wrench.

  16. Clean the area of the oil pan drainage hole. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.

    All-purpose cleaning spray is used to clean the area around the oil pan drain plug.

  17. Lower the car.

  18. Remove the oil filler cap. Insert the funnel.

    The engine oil filler cap is removed, and a funnel is inserted.

  19. Pour oil into the engine through the filler. Required amount of oil: 3.6 L.

    New engine oil is poured into the engine through the funnel. The required amount is 3.6 L.

    Professionals Recommend:

    Use the oil recommended by the manufacturer.

  20. Check the oil level using the dipstick. Top up oil if necessary.

    The engine oil level is checked using the dipstick.

    Please Note:

    The oil level should be between the Min and Max marks.

  21. Tighten the oil filler cap.

    The engine oil filler cap is tightened.

  22. Run the engine for a few minutes. After the oil pressure warning light goes out, stop the engine.

  23. Check the oil level 5 minutes after the stop of the engine operation using a dipstick and add oil if necessary.

    After the engine has been stopped for 5 minutes, the oil level is re-checked with the dipstick.

Final Checks and Recommendations

AUTODOC Recommends:

  • The oil level should be between the Min and Max marks.
  • Make sure that the oil filler cap is properly tightened.
  • Check the threaded plug of the drainage hole and the oil filter seal for tightness. If necessary, carefully tighten them up.
  1. Remove the fender protection cover.

  2. Close the hood.

Note that the oil pressure warning light, which indicates insufficient pressure in the lubrication system, may be on for a longer time than usual. After a few seconds, the oil will fill all the channels, and the light will go out.

To protect the environment from pollution, be sure to dispose of the used filters at special collection points.
