How to Change Fiat Punto 199 Engine Oil and Filter
A replacement guide by AUTODOC
Important Information
Important! This replacement procedure can be used for: FIAT GRANDE PUNTO (199_) 1.3 Multijet, FIAT PUNTO (199_) 1.3 Multijet, FIAT PUNTO EVO (199_) 1.3 Multijet, FIAT PUNTO Van (199_) 1.3 Multijet. The steps may slightly vary depending on the car design.
AUTODOC recommends:
- Replace the oil filter every time when changing motor oil.
- Wear gloves to prevent contact with hot liquid.
- All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Tools You'll Need
- Wire brush
- All-purpose cleaning spray
- Torx bit T45
- Drive socket #10
- Drive socket #19
- Drive socket #32
- Ratchet wrench
- Torque wrench
- Tap wrench
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- Flat Screwdriver
- Fender cover
Recommended Sequence of Steps
Step 1: Open the hood.
Open the hood of the Fiat Punto 199.
Step 2: Use a fender protection cover.
Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 3: Unscrew the engine cover fastener.
Unscrew the engine cover fastener using a drive socket #10 and a ratchet wrench.
Step 4: Remove the engine cover.
Remove the engine cover.
Tip from AUTODOC: Do not apply excessive force when removing the part. Otherwise, you may damage it.
Step 5: Unscrew the oil filler plug.
Unscrew the oil filler plug.
Step 6: Lift the car.
Lift the car using a jack or place it over an inspection pit.
Tip from AUTODOC experts: The vehicle must be on an even keel, and if it is at an angle, the drain plug must be at the lowest point. All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Step 7: Position the waste oil container.
Put a waste oil container with at least 4 liters capacity under the drainage hole.
Step 8: Clean the oil pan drainage hole area.
Clean the area of the oil pan drainage hole using a wire brush and all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 9: Unscrew the drain plug.
Unscrew the drain plug using a Torx T45 bit and a tap wrench.
Step 10: Drain the used oil.
Drain the used oil.
Tip from AUTODOC experts: Caution! The oil may be hot.
Step 11: Prepare a container for the old oil filter.
Prepare a container for the old oil filter.
Step 12: Clean the oil filter housing cap.
Clean the oil filter housing cap using all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 13: Unscrew the filter housing cap.
Unscrew the filter housing cap together with the old filter element using a drive socket #32 and a ratchet wrench.
Step 14: Place the old oil filter in the container.
Put the old oil filter in the container.
Tip from AUTODOC: Move up the container. The oil starts to drain out of the drainage hole immediately after you have removed the oil filter.
Step 15: Detach the oil filter.
Detach the oil filter from the filter cover.
Step 16: Remove the oil filter cover O-ring.
Remove the oil filter cover O-ring using a flat screwdriver.
Step 17: Clean the oil filter housing cap.
Clean the oil filter housing cap using all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 18: Install a new O-ring.
Install a new O-ring to its mounting seat on the filter cover.
Step 19: Install the new oil filter.
Install the new oil filter to the mounting seat on the filter cover.
Please note! Make sure to install the filter correctly. Don't mix up the sides of the part.
Step 20: Lubricate the new filter's rubber seal.
Lubricate the rubber seal of the new filter with a little amount of fresh oil.
Step 21: Install and tighten the new oil filter housing cover.
Install a new oil filter housing cover and tighten it. Use a drive socket #32 and a torque wrench. Tighten it to 25 Nm torque.
Step 22: Clean the oil pan drainage hole area.
Clean the area of the oil pan drainage hole.
Step 23: Screw in and tighten the new drainage plug.
Screw in the new drainage plug and tighten it. Use a drive socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 28 Nm torque.
Step 24: Clean the oil pan drainage hole area.
Clean the area of the oil pan drainage hole using all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 25: Lower the car.
Lower the car.
Step 26: Remove the oil filler cap.
Remove the oil filler cap.
Step 27: Insert the funnel.
Insert the funnel.
Step 28: Pour oil into the engine.
Pour oil into the engine through the filler. Required amount of oil: 3.7 L.
Tip from AUTODOC: Use the oil recommended by the manufacturer.
Step 29: Check the oil level.
Check the oil level using the dipstick. Top up oil if necessary.
Please note! The oil level should be between the Min and Max marks.
Step 30: Install the oil filler cap.
Install the oil filler cap.
Step 31: Tighten the oil filler cap.
Tighten the oil filler cap.
Step 32: Run the engine.
Run the engine for a few minutes. After the oil pressure warning light goes out, stop the engine.
Step 33: Check the oil level again.
Check the oil level 5 minutes after the stop of the engine operation using a dipstick and add oil if necessary.
Please note! The oil level should be between the Min and Max marks. Make sure that the oil filler cap is properly tightened. Check the threaded plug of the drainage hole and the oil filter seal for tightness. If necessary, carefully tighten them up.
Step 34: Install the engine cover.
Install the engine cover and secure it.
Tip from AUTODOC experts: Make sure the engine cover is properly seated. It should not be displaced with respect to the guiding fasteners. Do not apply excessive force when installing the part. Otherwise, you may damage the fasteners.
Step 35: Screw in the engine cover fasteners.
Screw in the engine cover fasteners using a drive socket #10 and a ratchet wrench.
Step 36: Remove the fender protection cover.
Remove the fender protection cover.
Step 37: Close the hood.
Close the hood.
AUTODOC recommends: Note that the oil pressure warning light, which indicates insufficient pressure in the lubrication system, may be on for a longer time than usual. After a few seconds, the oil will fill all the channels, and the light will go out. To protect the environment from pollution, be sure to dispose of the used filters at special collection points.
