Operation of Door Closers

Operation Mechanism

Operation is based on a hydraulically controlled rack and pinion or CAM-action mechanism (used in models like DC330, DC250). Oil within the closer controls closing and latching speeds, as well as delayed closing and back check features. Adjustable valves allow for precise adjustment of these speeds and features.

When a door is opened, the internal spring becomes tense. Releasing the door allows the spring's potential to push the piston back, closing the door. Pressure relief valves are a standard feature (except for DC210 and DC215) designed to protect the door from damage and ensure reliable operation in demanding conditions.

Back Check (BC)

Back Check provides a braking effect on door movement from approximately 70°-80° to the fully open position (180°). This feature prevents the door from being pulled open by wind. It can be adjusted by selecting the desired arm position, typically using Valve B. It is recommended for use with external doors.

Delayed Closing (DC)

Delayed Closing slows down the door's movement from the fully open (180°) position to approximately 70°. Beyond this point, the door closes at normal speed. The starting angle for this delay can be adjusted by selecting the desired arm position. The closing speed within this delayed phase can be further adjusted using Valve D. This feature is recommended for internal doors.

Adjustment (C- and L-Valve)

Closing Speed (Valve C): The closing speed can be adjusted from 180° down to 15° (or 170° to 7° for DC330 and DC250).

Latching Speed (Valve L): The latching speed can be adjusted from 15° down to 0° (or 7° to 0° for DC330 and DC250).

Adjustable Closing Force

ABLOY® DC334, DC335, DC240, DC247, DC250, DC330, and DC270 door closers are equipped with adjustable spring power, allowing for presetting of the spring. This adjustable spring power enables the same door closer to be used in various applications.

Function of Temperature

Closing Time as a Function of Temperature

Changes in temperature have only a minimal effect on the performance of ABLOY® door closers. The ABLOY® DC240, in particular, guarantees constant closing speed in all situations, thanks to its high-quality hydraulic oil and patented valve systems, which have earned it a legendary reputation.

Changes in temperature have only a minimal effect on the performance of ABLOY® door closers and their adjusted features. ABLOY® door closers exceed standard demands for temperature variations.

The EN1154 standard specifies the following:

  • A: A standard closing time of 5 seconds at +20 °C.
  • B: A minimum closing time of 3 seconds at +40 °C (check point only).
  • C: A maximum closing time of 25 seconds at −15 °C (check point only).

[Graph Description: A line graph illustrating "Closing Time as a Function of Temperature" for the ABLOY® DC240. The Y-axis represents seconds (closing time) and the X-axis represents temperature in Celsius (°C). The graph shows that the closing time remains relatively stable across a wide temperature range, from -35°C to +50°C, with specific points labeled A, B, and C indicating performance at different temperatures.]

Door Opening Force with Sliding Arm
