SEIKO Watch: Map Meter, Mile Marker, and Rotating Compass Bezel
This document provides instructions for using the Map Meter, Mile Marker, and Rotating Compass Bezel functions on SEIKO watches. It includes detailed steps, precautions, and explanations for optimal use. The introduction is available in multiple languages including English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, and Chinese.
Map Meter/Mile Marker Function
The Map Meter/Mile Marker function allows you to measure the real distance of a route on a map by tracing the route with a dedicated wheel that drives the dial ring.
Map Meter Function: Watches equipped with this function feature a dial ring with a 1:50,000 map meter scale for kilometer readout.
Mile Marker Function: Watches equipped with this function feature a dial ring with a 1:62,500 mile marker scale for mile readout.
How to Use the Map Meter/Mile Marker Function
- Unlock the driving wheel by turning its guard clockwise until it stops.
- Gently turn the driving wheel so that the "0 mile" or "0 km" mark on the dial ring aligns with the 9 o'clock position on the watch dial.
- Place the map on a flat surface. Position the driving wheel at your starting point on the map.
- With the watch dial facing upwards and the driving wheel at the 9 o'clock position, slowly trace the route on the map with the driving wheel. Ensure the driving wheel rotates counter-clockwise as you trace.
- Read the measurement on the dial ring indicated by the pointer. Refer to the specific scale reading instructions for accuracy.
- After completing the measurement, lock the driving wheel by turning the guard counter-clockwise until it stops.
How to Read the Map Meter Scale
This function is designed for maps with a 1:50,000 scale for kilometer readout.
- For 1:50,000 scale maps: The figure indicated by the pointer on the dial's map meter scale directly corresponds to the real distance in kilometers. For example, if the pointer indicates "2" on the scale, the traced route distance is 2 km.
- For other map scales: Divide the map's scale by the watch's scale (50,000) and multiply the result by the distance indicated on the map meter scale. For example, if using a 1:20,000 scale map and the pointer shows "2", the distance is (20,000 / 50,000) x 2 = 0.8 km. If using a 1:150,000 scale map and the pointer shows "6", the distance is (150,000 / 50,000) x 6 = 18 km.
How to Read the Mile Marker Scale
This function is designed for maps with a 1:62,500 scale for mile readout.
- For 1:62,500 scale maps: The figure indicated by the pointer on the dial's mile marker scale directly corresponds to the real distance in miles. For example, if the pointer indicates "2" on the scale, the traced route distance is 2 miles.
- For other map scales: Divide the map's scale by the watch's scale (62,500) and multiply the result by the distance indicated on the mile marker scale. For example, if using a 1:24,000 scale map and the pointer shows "2", the distance is (24,000 / 62,500) x 2 = 0.77 miles. If using a 1:150,000 scale map and the pointer shows "6", the distance is (150,000 / 62,500) x 6 = 14.4 miles.
Precautions on Using the Watch with the Map Meter/Mile Marker Function
- Trace routes slowly and securely with the driving wheel, avoiding excessive force. If pressed too lightly, the wheel may slip off the route.
- Do not use this function in sandy or dusty environments.
- While the watch is water-resistant up to 20 bar, do not use the Map Meter/Mile Marker function in water, as it may damage the driving wheel. Ensure the driving wheel is securely locked when wearing the watch in water.
- To prevent strain on the stem, keep the driving wheel locked during normal use.
- The accuracy of distance readings may vary based on measurement conditions; use readings as an approximate guide.
- Exercise caution with the serrated edge of the driving wheel, which is sharp. Keep the driving wheel locked during normal wear to prevent potential injury.
Rotating Compass Bezel
This function uses the 24-hour hand to indicate directions.
How to Use the Compass Bezel (Northern Hemisphere)
- Set the "N" mark on the rotating compass bezel to the 12 o'clock position on the watch dial. The bezel's direction marks should align as follows: 3 o'clock position: E (East), 6 o'clock position: S (South), 9 o'clock position: W (West).
- Keep the watch dial level. Point the 24-hour hand towards the sun. The direction marks on the bezel will then indicate the corresponding directions (North, East, South, West).
How to Use the Compass Bezel (Southern Hemisphere)
- Set the "S" mark on the rotating compass bezel to align with the 24-hour hand.
- Keep the watch dial level. Point the 12 o'clock position on the dial towards the sun. The direction marks on the bezel will then indicate the corresponding directions.
Precautions on Using the Compass Bezel
- Use the compass in locations where the sun is visible or its position is known.
- Before using the compass, ensure the 24-hour hand is set to the correct current time for your area.
- The compass provides a rough indication of directions and should not be relied upon for critical accuracy.
- If daylight saving time (summer time) is active, set your watch one hour behind the current time before using the rotating compass bezel.
