Choosing the Right Detergent

Use only High Efficiency (HE) detergents, marked "HE" or "High Efficiency." Low-water washing with non-HE detergent causes excessive sudsing, longer cycle times, reduced rinsing performance, potential component malfunction, and buildup of mold or mildew. HE detergents should be low-sudsing and quick-dispersing, holding soil in suspension. Not all HE detergents are identical; natural, organic, or homemade HE detergents may generate high suds. Always follow the detergent manufacturer's instructions.

About Detergent Concentration

Most concentrated HE detergents show concentration levels on the bottle. If not, calculate by dividing package size (fl. oz.) by the number of loads. Refer to the chart below.

If cleaning results are poor, try a lower concentration number. If suds are excessive, try a higher number.

Concentration Number of ounces / number of loads
2X 1.5-2.49 (44.4 ml–73.6 ml)
3X 0.9-1.49 (26.6 ml–44.1 ml)
4X 0.7-0.89 (20.7 ml–26.3 ml)
5X 0.5-0.69 (14.8 ml–20.4 ml)
6X 0.3-0.49 (8.9 ml–14.5 ml)

Using the Dispenser Drawer

  1. Open the dispenser drawer.
  2. Add laundry products as described in steps 4-6 in the "Using Your Washer" section.
  3. Slowly close the dispenser drawer, ensuring it is completely closed.

NOTE: A small amount of water may remain in dispensers from the previous cycle; this is normal.

IMPORTANT: Do not use chlorine bleach.

Adding HE detergent to dispenser

Visual Description: An illustration shows the HE detergent compartment of the dispenser drawer. A bottle labeled "HE detergent" is shown with an arrow pointing to the compartment. Text indicates "Use only High Efficiency (HE) detergent.".

Pour a measured amount of HE detergent into the compartment. Do not overfill, as this may cause premature dispensing.

IMPORTANT:

Adding the proper amount of detergent

Using Your Washer

First wash cycle without laundry

Before washing clothes for the first time, add liquid or powdered HE detergent to the dispenser. Choose the Quick Wash cycle and run it without clothes. This ensures the interior is clean and the dispenser drawer is ready.

1. Sort and prepare your laundry

Sort items by recommended cycle, water temperature, and colorfastness. Separate heavily soiled items from lightly soiled, and delicate items from sturdy fabrics. Treat stains promptly and test stain removers on an inside seam.

IMPORTANT:

2. Add laundry products (if desired)

Visual Description: An illustration shows the inside of the washer drum. Arrows indicate where to add single-dose laundry packets, Oxi-type boosters, or fabric softener crystals directly into the drum before adding laundry.

Single-dose laundry packets, Oxi-type boosters, or fabric softener crystals can be added to the drum prior to adding laundry.

NOTES:

3. Load laundry into washer

Visual Description: An illustration shows a partially filled washer drum with clothes loosely placed inside. An arrow points to the door, indicating it should be closed firmly.

Place sorted items loosely in the washer. Items need to move freely for best cleaning and to reduce wrinkling and tangling. Close the washer door firmly until it clicks.

4. Add HE detergent*

Visual Description: Two illustrations show how to add liquid HE detergent and powdered HE detergent into the dispenser drawer compartments.

NOTE: Do not add single-dose laundry packets, Oxi-type boosters, or fabric softener crystals to dispensers; they will not dispense correctly.

5. Add liquid fabric softener to dispenser (if desired)

Visual Description: An illustration shows liquid fabric softener being poured into the fabric softener compartment of the dispenser drawer. An arrow points to the MAX fill line.

Pour a measured amount of liquid fabric softener into the liquid fabric softener compartment. Follow manufacturer's directions for the correct amount based on load size.

Fabric softener is dispensed in the last rinse, even if Extra Rinse is selected.

IMPORTANT: Do not overfill, dilute, or use more than 1/4 cup (60 mL). Do not fill past the MAX line. Overfilling causes immediate dispensing.

Solution: Tighten fill hose connection. Seat fill hose washers. Secure drain hose. Check household plumbing. Remove strainer/stocking from drain hose.

Water or suds leaking from door or rear of cabinet

Possible Causes: Not using HE detergent or using too much HE detergent. Residue on door glass. Debris on inner door glass/seal.

Solution: Use only HE detergent, measure correctly. Clean door glass underside. Clean inner door glass and seal.

Leaking around door

Possible Causes: Hair, lint, or debris on inner door glass preventing proper seal.

Solution: Clean inner door glass and seal. See "Cleaning the Door Seal" in "Washer Maintenance.".

Washer not performing as expected

Load not completely covered in water

Possible Causes: Water level not visible or doesn't cover clothes.

Solution: This is normal for HE front-load washers; they sense load size and add water accordingly.

Washer won't run or fill; washer stops working

Possible Causes: Check for proper water supply. Check proper electrical supply.

Solution: Ensure hose is attached and water is flowing to inlet valve. Turn on water faucet. Check inlet valve screen. Check for kinks in inlet hose. Plug power cord into grounded outlet. Ensure power to outlet. Do not plug into GFI. Check electrical source or call electrician for low voltage. Reset tripped breaker; replace fuses.

Washer won't run or fill; washer stops working (cont.)

Possible Causes: Normal washer operation. Door not firmly shut. Washer not loaded as recommended. Not using HE detergent or using too much HE detergent.

Solution: Door must be closed and latched. Washer pauses during certain phases (e.g., 2 min soak/tumble). Avoid over-sudsing with HE detergent. Cold Wash uses less water initially. Door must be closed during operation. Rearrange load evenly. Do not add items after cycle starts. Do not add more water. Use HE detergent, measure correctly. To remove suds, cancel and select Rinse & Spin.

Washer stops during the program/cycle and the Start/Pause indicator blinks

Possible Causes: Door not opened between cycles. It is the end of program/cycle and Rinse Hold is activated. Program/cycle was interrupted.

Solution: Door must be opened and closed before a new cycle. Turn knob to spin speed if desired; otherwise, rinse water drains and cycle ends. Ensure door is closed. Touch Start/Pause to continue.

Washer not draining/spinning; loads are still wet

Possible Causes: Drain hose extends too far into standpipe. Drain hose clogged or too high. Strainer/stocking on end of hose. Drain hose fits too tightly or is taped.

Solution: Ensure drain hose is properly installed (4½" max in standpipe, not taped). Lower hose if higher than 49". Remove clogs. Ensure hose is loose, not sealed, with an air gap. See "Route Drain Hose" instructions.

Washer not draining/spinning; loads are still wet (cont.)

Possible Causes: Using cycles with lower spin speed. Washer not loaded as recommended. Load out of balance. Not using HE detergent or too much HE detergent. Small items caught in pump/between drum and tub. Transport bolts not removed. Washer not level.

Solution: Use recommended cycle/spin speed. Avoid tightly packed/unbalanced loads. Balance single items. Use only HE detergent, measure correctly. Check drum/pump for items. Remove transport bolts. Adjust leveling feet. Ensure washer is on a level, firm surface.

Washer vibrates during spinning

Possible Causes: Transport bolts not removed. Washer not level.

Solution: Remove transport bolts. Adjust leveling feet. Ensure washer is on a level, firm surface.

Spin speed "0" blinks on the control panel and/or laundry is still very wet

Possible Causes: Unbalanced load prevented spin cycle. Spin button set to low speed. Excessive foam formation.

Solution: Add more laundry items of different sizes to balance load and start Rinse & Spin. Set a higher spin speed. Start Rinse & Spin with Dosing Aid option to manage suds.

Spin results are poor

Possible Causes: Unbalanced load prevented spin cycle.

Solution: See solution for "Spin speed "0" blinks."

Door locked at end of wash cycle

Possible Causes: Water remaining in washer. TumbleFresh™ option is on.

Solution: Select Rinse & Spin to drain remaining water. Door unlocks at end of drain. If TumbleFresh™ is on, door remains locked for up to 6 hours; cancel option by touching Power button.

Door will not unlock

Possible Causes: Water did not completely drain. Error code displayed.

Solution: Select Rinse & Spin to remove remaining water. Door unlocks after 1 minute. Failure mode locks door; touch Start/Pause to exit, then wait for unlock. See "How to Open Door in Case of Power Failure.".

Incorrect or wrong wash or rinse temperatures

Possible Causes: Water temperature hotter than 104°F (40°C). Check for proper water supply.

Solution: Wait for water temperature to drop. Ensure hose is attached and water is flowing. Check inlet valve screen. Check for kinks in hose.

Desired setting or option does not light

Possible Causes: Not all settings/options available with each cycle; some cannot be used together.

Solution: See "Program/Cycle Guide" for available settings and options.

Load not rinsed

Possible Causes: Check water supply. Not using HE detergent or using too much HE detergent. Washer not loaded as recommended. Load out of balance.

Solution: Ensure hose attached, water flowing, faucet on, inlet screen clear, no kinks. Use only HE detergent, measure correctly. Avoid tightly packing; load dry items only. Use correct cycle. Add only 1-2 garments after start. Redistribute load if unbalanced.

Load is wrinkled, twisted, or tangled

Possible Causes: Washer not loaded as recommended. Spin speed too high. Washer not unloaded promptly. Not choosing right cycle. Wash water not warm enough.

Solution: Add load loosely; items need to move freely. Reduce tangling by mixing load types. Use recommended cycle. Select lower spin speed. Unload promptly or use TumbleFresh™. Use Delicates cycle or low spin speed. Use warm/hot wash water if safe.

Not cleaning or removing stains

Possible Causes: Washer not loaded as recommended. Not using HE detergent or too much HE detergent. Hard water/high iron. Fabric softener dispensing ball used. Powdered detergent used for low-speed cycle.

Solution: Load loosely; add 1-2 garments after start. Use HE detergent, measure correctly. Consider water softener/iron filter. Do not use dispensing balls; use softener compartment. Consider liquid detergent.

Not cleaning or removing stains (cont.)

Possible Causes: Not using correct cycle. Not using dispensers. Not washing like colors together. Not enough detergent/hard water. Monthly maintenance not done. Not using HE detergent/too much HE detergent. Door not left open. Sharp items in pockets. Strings/straps tangled. Items damaged before washing. Washer tightly packed. Door closed on item.

Solution: Use warmer wash temp or Heavy Duty cycle. Add extra rinse. Use dispensers. Wash like colors together. Use more detergent for heavy soils/cold/hard water. Run "Clean Washer" cycle monthly. Unload promptly or use TumbleFresh™. Leave door open. Empty pockets, zip zippers, fasten snaps/hooks. Tie strings/straps. Mend items before washing. Avoid packing washer tightly. Do not overfill. Push load fully in.

Odors

Possible Causes: Not using HE detergent/too much HE detergent. Door not left open after use.

Solution: Use HE detergent, measure correctly. See "Using Your Washer." Leave door open to dry.

Fabric damage

Possible Causes: Sharp items in pockets. Strings/straps tangled. Items damaged before washing. Washer tightly packed. Door closed on item.

Solution: Empty pockets, zip zippers, fasten snaps/hooks. Tie strings/straps. Mend items before washing. Avoid packing washer tightly. Do not overfill. Push load fully in.

Gray whites, dingy colors

Possible Causes: Load not sorted properly. Wash temperatures too low. Not enough detergent/hard water.

Solution: Sort darks from whites/lights. Use hot/warm temps if safe. Use more detergent for heavy soils/cold/hard water.

Incorrect dispenser operation

Possible Causes: Clogged dispensers or products dispensing too soon. Water in dispenser after cycle. Low inlet water pressure/clogged filter.

Solution: Do not overfill dispenser. Load dispensers before starting. Low pressure may leave residue; use warmer wash temp if possible. Small water amounts in dispenser after cycle are normal. Ensure faucet is open, check/clean inlet hose filters.

Detergent dispenser contains detergent residue after program ends

Possible Causes: Low inlet water pressure/clogged filter.

Solution: Ensure faucet is open, check/clean inlet hose filters.

Single-dose laundry packet not dissolving

Possible Causes: Adding laundry packet incorrectly.

Solution: Add packet to drum before clothes, not dispenser. Follow manufacturer's instructions.

Cycle time changes or cycle time too long

Possible Causes: Normal operation. Excessive suds. Load out of balance. Not using correct cycle.

Solution: Cycle times vary automatically. Special suds routine adds time. Load redistribution for balance extends time. Quick Wash is for small loads; larger loads increase time.

Liquid detergent on door glass prior to beginning of cycle

Possible Causes: Detergent is free to flow from single-dose dispenser.

Solution: Do not add liquid detergent until laundry is loaded.
