Installation and Operation Manual
Model: FA-101T
Document Revision: LT-513 Rev. 6
Date: January 2006
Introduction
The FA-101T is a supervised single-zone 24V DC Fire Alarm Control Panel. The panel offers the following features:
- 1 Class B detection zone
- 1 Class B signal zone, 1.7A
- DIP switch selectable signal circuit outputs (temporal or steady)
- Alarm and trouble relay contacts
- Remote trouble and A.C. ON indication
- Zone silence/disconnect switch
- Buzzer silence switch
- LED indicators for zone alarm and trouble, A.C. On, Battery Fault, Ground Fault, Common Trouble, Signal Trouble, and Signal Silenced
Mechanical Installation
The panel can be surface or flush mounted. Refer to Figure 1 for mounting details.
Surface Mounting
- Mark the location of the four mounting holes.
- Install the top two screws into the wall and place the panel over the screws.
- Install the bottom screws and tighten all four screws.
Flush Mounting
- Make the wall cut-out according to the panel dimensions.
- Remove the control panel door.
- Mount the flush mounting trim (model FA-102TR) to the back box using the provided screws and nuts.
- Re-install the door on top of the flush trim. A minor adjustment to the cam lock may be needed for the flush trim.
Function Selection
Jumpers are available for function selection. Refer to Figure 2 for jumper locations.
- JW1: Cut for resettable +24V DC supply.
- JW2: Cut to make auxiliary relay disconnectable.
- JW3: Cut for normally open trouble contacts.
- JW4: Cut for normally closed trouble contacts.
Wiring
DIP SWITCH DSW1 is used to set the preferred signal zone 1 output, signal silence inhibit, and common trouble flash rate. The default signal zone output is temporal code.
DIP switch DSW1 Configuration:
- Signal Zone: ON - steady, OFF - temporal code (default)
- Signal Silence Inhibit: ON - 1 minute signal silence inhibit, OFF - normal signal silence (default)
- Trouble Buzzer and LED: ON - steady buzzer and LED, OFF - Pulsing Buzzer and LED (default)
Code Descriptions:
- Temporal Code: 3 rounds of 0.5 second ON, 0.5 second OFF, then 1.5 second pause.
- Steady: Signal on continuously.
Note: After positioning DIP switches in DSW1 (ON or OFF), the panel must be reset by holding the Reset button for 5 seconds.
Detection Zone
The system has one detection zone. Refer to Figure 3 for wiring instructions and Figure 4 for wire size.
Signal Zone
One signal zone is available for bells and horns, providing 1.7A of signal power. Refer to Figure 3 for wiring instructions and Figure 5 for wire size.
Alarm and Trouble Relays
Alarm and trouble relay contacts are provided. Refer to Figure 6 for contact location and designation.
Remote Annunciation
Annunciation outputs are provided for remote trouble indicator and buzzer. Refer to Figure 6 for wiring instructions.
A.C. Power And Batteries
The A.C. power connects to the terminal block above the transformer. Use Gel Cell or Sealed Lead-Acid batteries. Connect batteries after power up. Use 24V 4AH batteries for 24 hours standby and 5 or 30 minutes of alarm. Refer to Appendix B for battery calculations.
ELECTRICAL RATING: 120V, 60Hz, 1A / 240V, 50Hz, 0.5A
Trouble Indicators and Controls
Refer to Figure 2 for the location of indicators and controls.
- Common Trouble LED: Yellow LED flashes and buzzer sounds for any trouble. If DSW1-8 is ON, the LED is steady and the buzzer sounds.
- Buzzer/Buzzer Silence Switch: Buzzer sounds intermittently for trouble, steadily for alarm. The Buzzer Silence switch silences the buzzer.
- Zone Trouble LED: Yellow LED illuminates steadily for an open loop in the zone.
- Battery Fault LED: Yellow Battery Fault LED and Common Trouble LED illuminate for battery removal, low voltage, or open battery leads.
- Ground Fault LED: Yellow Ground Fault LED illuminates steadily, Common Trouble LED flashes, and buzzer sounds intermittently for ground faults (10K ohms or less).
- Signal Trouble LED: Yellow LED illuminates steadily for any open or short in the signal zone. (Located behind the display plate.)
Sequence of Operation
- Normal: All indicators OFF except green A.C. ON LED.
- Alarm: Red zone alarm LED illuminates steadily.
- Signal Silence: If signal silence inhibit is selected, silencing is delayed for 60 seconds after alarm initiation. After the delay, the signal silence switch silences bells and horns. The signal silenced LED illuminates. If the switch is in the OFF normal position without an alarm, the panel indicates trouble.
- Reset/Lamp Test: The reset switch restores latched functions. Smoke detectors reset when combustion clears. Holding the reset switch for five seconds performs a lamp test and resets the panel.
System Checkout
Before powering on:
- Check all external wiring for opens, shorts, or grounds.
- Ensure transformer cables are securely connected.
- Verify A.C. power wiring connection. Do not connect batteries to prevent sparking.
- Ensure all switches are in the normal (left) position.
Power up and Troubleshooting
- After system checkout, power up the panel. The A.C. ON LED should illuminate. The trouble buzzer should sound intermittently, and the Common Trouble LED should flash, indicating a battery fault.
- Connect batteries carefully, observing polarity. The Common Trouble LED should extinguish. If it remains on, check the front panel LEDs:
- Battery LED: Indicates low battery voltage (below 20.4V).
- Ground Fault LED: Indicates a ground on extended wires.
- Zone Trouble LED: Indicates an open loop or the signal silence switch is in the OFF normal position.
- Signal Trouble LED: Indicates an open loop or short in the signal zone.
Appendix A: Compatible Devices
Lists compatible devices for Canadian 2-Wire Smoke Detector Control Panels (ULC) and United States 2-Wire Smoke Detector Control Panels (ULI), as well as United States Signaling Device Control Panels.
Notes for Compatibility:
- Reset time: hold for five seconds minimum.
- Total standby current of all detectors must not exceed 3 mA when mixing models or using the same model on a circuit.
- Some detectors are compatible with initiating circuits having Compatibility Identifier "A".
Compatible Brands and Models include: Mircom, Cerebrus Pyrotronics, Fenwal, System Sensor, Mirtone, Simplex, Edwards, Sentrol-ESL, Detection Systems Inc., Wheelock, Gentex.
Appendix B: Battery Calculations (Selection Guide)
Use the provided form to determine required batteries. Ensure a dedicated AC branch circuit with proper over-current protection and #12 AWG wire.
Power Requirements (Amperes):
Model Number | Description | Qty | Standby (A) | Alarm (B) |
---|---|---|---|---|
FA-101T | Fire Alarm, 1 Det, 1 Sig | X | 0.066 | 0.125 |
RTI-1 | Remote Trouble Indicator | X | 0.035 | 0.035 |
