1.3 Intended use
Use devolo products, devolo software, and provided accessories as described to prevent damage and injury.
1.3.1 Product
This product is an electronic device for home networking. It transmits the Internet signal through household electrical wiring and Wi-Fi using PLC (Powerline Communication) or Wi-Fi modules. It does not replace an existing router. The device requires connection to an electrical outlet and the router via an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi. It is compatible only with other devices from the devolo Magic series.
1.4 Safety notes
It is essential to read and understand all safety and operating instructions before using the devolo device for the first time. Keep them for future reference.
Ambient conditions: Use only in dry indoor locations. Avoid high temperature fluctuations and moisture.
Temperature range during operation: 32°F to 104°F (0°C to 40°C)
Temperature range during storage: -13°F to 158°F (-25°C to 70°C)
Maximum installation height: 6.5 ft (two meters) unless additional fastening is available.
Software: Use only free, downloadable programs approved by devolo AG. Modifications to firmware or software can damage the product.
Accessories: Use only provided accessories, such as the Cat-5e UTP Ethernet cable.

2 Introduction
This section introduces the Devolo Magic series and provides an overview of the Magic 2 LAN 1-1 adapter.
2.1 devolo Magic
Devolo Magic represents the new generation of Powerline (PLC) technology based on G.hn architecture. It uses household electrical wiring for data transmission, similar to HomePlug AV technology.
Note: A devolo Magic network requires at least two devolo Magic devices. Devices from the devolo Magic series are not compatible with dLAN devices.
2.2 Short overview of the devolo Magic adapter
The devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1 adapter offers:
- Powerline:
- Range up to 1600 feet.
- 128-bit AES encryption for security.
- Integrated PowerSave mode for energy efficiency.
- 1 gigabit network port: Connects stationary devices (game consoles, TVs, media receivers) to the Internet via the Powerline network.
- Integrated electrical outlet: Functions as a standard wall outlet for other devices.

2.2.1 PLC button
Starting up a new devolo Magic PLC network: New adapters automatically attempt to pair when reconnected to the mains. A network is established within 3 minutes.
Expanding an existing devolo Magic PLC network: Connect a new adapter to your existing network using a shared PLC password.
2.2.2 Reading the PLC indicator light (LED)
The LED indicates the adapter's status:

*** The adapter enters standby mode after 10 minutes of inactivity. It becomes inaccessible over Powerline until a network device is reconnected.
2.2.3 Network port
Connect stationary devices like computers or game consoles using a standard Cat-5e UTP network cable (not for in-wall use).
2.2.4 Integrated power outlet
Use the integrated outlet for general consumers. Electronic devices with power supply adapters may affect PLC performance. The adapter's filter reduces external interference.
2.2.5 Reset/Restart
Restart: Press the PLC/reset button for less than 10 seconds.
Reset to Factory default settings: Press and hold the PLC/reset button for longer than 10 seconds. This removes the adapter from the network and restores factory defaults. Be aware that this erases all custom settings and passwords.
Wait for the LED to flash white, then disconnect from power. The adapter is now removed from your network.
3 Initial use
This chapter explains how to set up your Devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1 and use the accompanying software.
3.1 Package contents
Verify the delivery includes:
- Starter Kit: 2x Devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1, 2x network cables (Cat-5e UTP, not for in-wall use), Printed installation guide, Printed safety flyer.
- Single adapter: 1x Devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1, 1x network cable (Cat-5e UTP, not for in-wall use), Printed installation guide, Printed safety flyer.
Devolo AG reserves the right to change package contents.
3.2 System requirements
- Operating systems supported by devolo Cockpit: Windows 7 (32/64-bit) and later, Ubuntu 13.10 (32/64-bit) and later, Mac (OS X 10.9) and later.
- Network connection: Your computer or device must have a network card or adapter.
Note: A devolo Magic network requires at least two adapters.
3.3 Connecting the devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1
This section details connecting and integrating the adapter into your network.
NOTICE: Damage to the device from the environment
High temperature fluctuations and moisture can damage the product and power line. The device is for indoor use and in dry conditions only.
Refer to the device's type plate for voltage and power consumption details. More information is available at www.devolo.com.
3.3.1 Starter Kit--Automatic setup for a new devolo Magic PLC network
CAUTION: Tripping hazard from connected network cables
Lay network cables accessibly to avoid tripping.
- Connect one devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1 to your Internet access device's network port (e.g., router) using the included network cable (Cat-5e UTP, not for in-wall use).
- Connect the other devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1 to your computer's network port (or another device's port) using the included network cable.
- Plug both adapters into electrical outlets within 3 minutes. When LEDs flash white (0.5 sec. intervals), they are ready and will automatically establish an encrypted connection.
When LEDs light up solid white on both adapters, your devolo Magic network is set up and protected. You have successfully completed installation with a Starter Kit.
3.3.2 Single--Expanding an existing PLC network by adding another devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1
CAUTION: Tripping hazard from connected network cables
Lay network cables accessibly to avoid tripping.
- Connect the new devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1 to your computer's network port (or another device's port) using the included network cable (Cat-5e UTP, not for in-wall use).
- Plug the adapter into an electrical outlet. The LED will flash white (0.5 sec. intervals), indicating it's ready but not yet integrated.
- Within 3 minutes, press the PLC button on an adapter in your existing network for approximately 1 second. The new adapter pairs automatically. Its LED will also flash white.
When LEDs light up solid white on both adapters, the new adapter is integrated. Only one adapter can be added per pairing operation.
3.3.3 Changing the network password
You can change the network password via:
- The web interface (see Chapter 4.4 Powerline).
- Devolo Cockpit or the Devolo Home Network App (see Chapter 3.4 Installation of devolo software).
3.4 Installation of devolo software
Installing devolo Cockpit software:
Devolo Cockpit finds devolo Magic adapters, displays device information, and encrypts your network. It allows navigation to the web interface.
Supported OS: Windows 7 (32/64-bit) and later, Ubuntu 13.10 (32/64-bit) and later, Mac (OS X 10.9) and later.
Download Cockpit from www.devolo.com/cockpit.
Downloading the devolo Home Network App:
This free app allows checking and configuring Wi-Fi, Magic, and LAN connections via smartphone or tablet. The device connects to the adapter over Wi-Fi.
- Download the app from your device's app store.
- The app icon will appear in your device's app list. Tapping it opens the start menu.

3.5 Removing the devolo Magic adapter from a PLC network
To remove an adapter and restore factory defaults, press and hold the PLC/reset button for longer than 10 seconds. Wait for the LED to flash white, then disconnect from power. This erases all custom settings.
To integrate it into another network, follow the steps in Chapter 3.3.2.
4 Network configuration
The devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1 has a built-in web interface for modifying all device settings.
4.1 Calling up the built-in web interface
Access the web interface via:
- The devolo Home Network App: Tap the adapter symbol.
- Devolo Cockpit software: Click the corresponding tab. The program finds the IP address and starts the configuration in your web browser.
More information on the app and Cockpit is in Chapter 3.4.
4.2 General information about the menu
Menu functions are described in the interface and this manual, following the same structure. Figures serve as examples.
Logging in: The web interface is not password protected by default. Assigning a login password is mandatory on first use to prevent unauthorized access.
Enter your password and click Log in.
Logging out: Click Log out.
Language selection: Choose your preferred language from the list.
Making changes: Use the ? Save icon to save settings or the ❌ Cancel icon to discard changes.
Required fields: Fields marked with a red border are mandatory.
Web Interface Navigation and Settings
Help text blank fields: Grayed-out text provides field guidance and disappears upon entry.
Default settings: Pre-configured settings for compatibility and ease of use, marked with an asterisk (*).
Recommended settings: Suggested settings that can be replaced with custom values.
Invalid entries: Highlighted by a red border or error messages.
Buttons:
- ? Disk icon: Save settings.
- ❌ Icon: Exit the interface area.
- ?️ Recycle bin icon: Delete an entry.
- ? Arrow icon: Refresh a list.
4.3 Overview
The Overview area displays the status of the devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1 and connected LAN/PLC devices.
4.3.1 System
- Name: Device name (hostname).
- MT number: Device type number.
- Serial number: Device serial number.
- MAC address: MAC address of the device.
- Firmware version: Current firmware version.
- System uptime: Time since the last restart.
4.3.2 Powerline
- Local device: Status information (“connected” or “not connected”).
- Network: Number of devices connected to the Powerline network.
4.3.3 LAN
- Ethernet: Network port status and speed (10/100/1000 Mbps) or “unconnected”.
- IPv4: DHCP status, IPv4 address, Subnet mask, Default gateway.
- IPv6: Link-local address, SLAAC address, Name server.
- Connections: Lists available and connected adapters with Device ID, MAC address, Send (Mbps), and Receive (Mbps) rates.
4.4 Powerline
Configure your PLC network settings here.
Powerline Network: Devices need a common encryption password to form a network. This is generated automatically during pairing or can be set manually.
Start pairing: Initiates the pairing process.
Leave Powerline network: Deletes the current password.
Powerline password: Assign a custom password for encryption. This password must be the same for all devices in the network.
Powerline domain name: Determines the name of your PLC network.
To add a new devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1 to your network, assign it a shared password via:
- Devolo Cockpit or Devolo Home Network App (Chapter 3.4).
- PLC button (Chapter 3.3).
- Web interface (PLC menu).
Pairing - Using on-screen button: Click Start pairing. The new adapter will appear in the list of connections.
Pairing - Using a custom password: Enter the password in the Powerline password field and save. Note that the custom password must be assigned individually to each adapter.
Unpairing - Removing an adapter: Click Leave Powerline network. Wait for the LED to flash red, then disconnect the adapter.
Compatibility mode: Select settings to mitigate potential negative effects with VDSL connections.
4.5 LAN
Configure network settings in the LAN area.
You can access the web interface using the device's current IP address (IPv4 or IPv6), which can be static or DHCP-assigned.
IPv4 Configuration: By default, DHCP is enabled for IPv4. If a DHCP server is present, the adapter will receive an address automatically. For static IP assignment, configure Address, Subnetmask, Default gateway, and Name server fields. Confirm settings and reboot.
IPv6 Configuration: Enable DHCPv6 for automatic IP address assignment. For static assignment, configure Address, Prefix, Default gateway, and Name server fields. Confirm settings and reboot.
4.6 System
Configure security and device functions in the System area.
4.6.1 System information
Enter a user-defined name (hostname) for the device, helpful for identifying multiple adapters.
4.6.2 Password
Set a login password for the web interface. It is recommended to set a password after installation to protect against unauthorized access.
4.6.3 Identify Device
Click Identify to make the adapter's white LED flash for 2 minutes, aiding visual identification.
4.6.4 LED
Enable the LED disabled option to turn off the LED for normal operation. Error status is still indicated by flashing.
LED disabled: Option to disable the LED.
Powersaving enabled: Allows the device to enter powersaving mode with reduced Ethernet traffic. Warning: Latency may increase.
Standby enabled: Allows the device to enter standby mode if no Ethernet link is detected. Warning: Device becomes unreachable via Powerline when the link is off.
4.6.5 Powersaving
If powersaving mode is enabled, the adapter automatically switches to powersaving when reduced Ethernet traffic is detected. This may affect latency. Powersaving is disabled by default.
4.6.6 Standby
If Standby mode is enabled, the adapter switches to standby if no Ethernet connection is active and Wi-Fi is disabled. The adapter is inaccessible over Powerline in this mode. It becomes accessible again when a network device is connected and powered on.
Standby mode is enabled by default.
4.6.7 Time server
Select your current time zone. The Time server (NTP) option lets you specify a time server for automatic time synchronization, including daylight saving adjustments.
4.6.8 Firmware update
The firmware includes the device's operating software. Devolo provides updates to modify functions. Updates can be initiated automatically or manually.
Regularly check for firmware updates: Enable this option to be notified of new versions.
Automatically install firmware updates: Allows the adapter to install found updates automatically.
Browse for updated firmware: Upload a firmware file from your computer.
Confirm the update with Upload. The device restarts automatically after a successful update. Do not interrupt the process.
4.6.9 Reboot
Click the Reboot button in the System area to restart the devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1.
4.6.10 Factory settings
Reset the devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1 to its original factory default settings by clicking Factory reset. This removes the adapter from the network and restores defaults. Wait for the LED to flash white, then disconnect from power. Custom settings and passwords will be lost.

5.2 Connection tips
To improve network transmission capacity:
- Plug the devolo Magic 2 LAN 1-1 directly into a wall outlet. Avoid power strips, as they may impair PLC signal transmission.
- If multiple outlets are close together, they may behave like a power strip; individual outlets are optimal.

5.3 Disposal of old devices
