Maximum Security Operators & Barriers
June 2025
Maximum Security Gate Operators
The 9500 series operators are designed for very large vehicular gates in Limited (Class III) and Restricted (Class IV) maximum security applications. They are not intended for Residential (Class I) or Commercial (Class II) applications, or where the public operates the gate.
These operators require external entrapment prevention devices, specifically Type B1 (non-contact) and/or Type B2 (contact), or a combination of both, in each direction of travel. A minimum of one Type B1 and one Type B2 is mandatory for each direction of travel for 9500 Series operators. Refer to the Installation Manual for safety details.
Minimum Gate Length
The 9500 Series offers variable speed, allowing adjustment up to 2 Ft/sec, with some models reaching 4 Ft/sec. Higher speeds necessitate a minimum gate length to account for start-up and slow-down times.
1620 Series Lane Barriers
The 1620 Lane Barriers are not crash-rated. They are designed to provide a barrier against passenger cars and light-duty pickup trucks. These barriers are mechanically linked to a 1603-580 lane barrier operator and are not a standalone product.
1625 Series Wedge Barriers
The 1625 Wedge Barriers are crash-rated to ASTM F2656-23 standards. They provide a formidable barrier against passenger cars and light-duty pickup trucks (up to 5,070 Lbs). These barriers are mechanically linked to a 1602-590 operator and are not standalone products.
UL 325 – February 2023 Compliance
DKS gate operators listed under UL 325 require monitored photo-beams and contact edges for entrapment protection where risk exists. Operators will not function without external entrapment protection devices installed in each direction of travel. Consult the gate operator installation manual for compatible devices.
The August 2018 update mandates a minimum of two independent entrapment protection means per direction of travel where entrapment risk is present. The specific number of external devices depends on the gate system layout and potential entrapment areas. For example, some gates may need multiple devices per direction. The 9500 Series specifically requires a minimum of one Type B1 AND one Type B2 in EACH direction of travel.
Exceptions exist for swing and vertical lift gates. Swing gates may only require two means of protection in the closing direction if no entrapment hazard exists in the opening direction. Vertical lift gates require two means in the down cycle and one in the up cycle. Model 1175 is treated as a vertical lift gate for these requirements.
Barrier gate operators installed such that the barrier arm stays more than 16 inches from a rigid object are exempt from entrapment protection requirements.
UL 325 Entrapment Protection Requirements
Gate Operator Type | Opening Protection | Closing Protection |
---|---|---|
Horizontal Slide Gate | 2 | 2 |
Horizontal Swing Gate | 2* | 2* |
Vertical Pivot Gate | 2 | 2 |
Vertical Lift gate | 1 | 2 |
Horizontal Bifold Gate | 2 | 2 |
*For horizontal swing gates, two independent entrapment protection means are required in each direction. If no entrapment zone exists in one direction, only one means is required for that direction, but the other direction must have two means.
