Choosing the Right Installation Location
Ensure the chosen location is suitable for the fan.
Check the room dimensions:
- Clearance: 30 inches from blade tip to nearest wall or obstruction.
- Height: 7 feet from bottom edge of blade to the floor.
Check the outlet box:
The outlet box must be securely mounted to the building structure and rated for fan support (70 lbs / 31.8 kg).
Checking the Ceiling Angle:
- Standard Mounting (Flat Ceiling): Hang the fan using a standard downrod. Some fans include a shorter downrod for low-profile installation.
- Angled Mounting (Angled or Vaulted Ceiling):
- A longer downrod may be required (sold separately at HunterFan.com).
- If the ceiling angle is greater than 34°, an Angled Mounting Kit is required (sold separately at HunterFan.com).
Angled Mounting Details: For optimal performance and appearance on high or angled ceilings, use a longer downrod. If the ceiling angle exceeds 34°, an Angled Mounting Kit is necessary. Both are available at HunterFan.com.
Hunter Pro Tip: To determine if an Angled Mounting Kit is needed, fold the provided guide on the dotted line, place it against the wall edge, and slide towards the ceiling. If the guide touches the wall but not the ceiling, an angled mounting kit is required.
Diagrams on page 4 illustrate location checks and ceiling angle considerations.
Installing the Ceiling Bracket
Remove any existing bracket. Use only the provided Hunter ceiling bracket.
Do this first: Turn Power OFF. Disconnect power at the circuit breaker to the outlet box and associated wall switch.
Option 1: Machine Screws
Secure the bracket to an existing, fan-rated outlet box using machine screws (provided with the outlet box) and washers. Ensure it is securely installed and rated for fan support (31.8 kg / 70 lbs or less).
Option 2: Wood Screws
Secure the bracket to a support structure with an approved electrical outlet box using wood screws and washers (included). Drill 9/64" pilot holes in the support structure to aid installation.
Angled Mounting Tip: For angled ceilings, point the bracket opening toward the peak.
Diagrams on page 5 illustrate bracket installation options.
Installing the Downrod
Follow these steps if using the pre-assembled downrod. For longer or shorter downrods, refer to the guide at the end of this manual.
- Step 1: Remove the pre-installed setscrew from the downrod to allow insertion.
- Step 2: Pass all wires to one side of the horizontal bar in the downrod assembly. Hand-tighten the downrod (at least 4-5 full turns) until it stops. Trim wires to leave approximately 8 inches extending from the top of the downrod.
- Step 3: Tighten the setscrew firmly with pliers. DO NOT HAND TIGHTEN.
Hunter Pro Tip: The ground wire attached to the downrod is approximately 8 inches long.
FAN FALL HAZARD
To prevent SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH:
- ALWAYS tighten the setscrew with pliers.
- DO NOT hand tighten the setscrew.
- CHECK the setscrew is tight using pliers each time you change fan direction.
Diagrams on page 5 illustrate downrod installation steps.
Hanging the Fan
Slide the canopy over the downrod and wires.
Progress Check: Your fan assembly should now resemble the illustration.
NOTICE: To prevent damage to the fan, ALWAYS lift by holding either the fan housing or the downrod. Place the downrod ball into the slot in the ceiling bracket.
Diagrams on page 6 illustrate hanging the fan.
Wiring the Fan
Follow these steps for quick and safe wiring. Choose the route matching your wall switch setup. If unsure, contact a qualified electrician.
You will need: 4 Wire Nuts (included in the bag).
Have a single switch?
- Connect the white (grounded) wire from the ceiling to the white wire from the fan.
- Connect the black (ungrounded) wire from the ceiling to the black and blue wires from the fan.
- Connect the three grounding wires (green, green/yellow stripe, or bare copper) coming from the ceiling, downrod, and hanging bracket using a wire nut.
WARNING
The ceiling fan must be grounded. If the ground wire for the installation site is not present, immediately STOP installation and consult a qualified electrician.
All wiring must be in accordance with national and local electrical codes ANSI/NFPA 70. If you are unfamiliar with wiring or in doubt, consult a qualified electrician.
Hunter Pro Tip: To connect wires: Push bare metal ends together, slide a wire nut over them, and twist clockwise until tight. Gently pull to ensure wires are secure.
Hunter Pro Tip (Extra Wiring): Turn wires upward and push them carefully back through the hanger bracket into the outlet box. Spread grounded wires on one side and ungrounded wires on the other. Ensure wires remain attached to wire nuts.
Have dual switches?
- Connect the white (grounded) wire from the ceiling to the white wire from the fan.
- Connect the black (ungrounded) wire from the ceiling to the black wire from the fan.
- Connect the second ungrounded (light) wire from the ceiling to the blue wire from the fan.
- Connect the three grounding wires (green, green/yellow stripe, or bare copper) coming from the ceiling, downrod, and hanging bracket using a wire nut.
Diagrams on page 7 illustrate wiring connections for single and dual switch setups.
Installing the Canopy
Fit the canopy in place as shown. Lift the canopy into place so that the screw holes align. Insert the two canopy screws found in the hardware bag and tighten.
Diagrams on page 8 illustrate canopy installation.
Installing the Blades
Insert grommets from the hardware bag into the blade holes. Secure each blade to a blade arm using blade screws from the hardware bag. Repeat for all 5 blades.
Lightly attach the blade arms to the motor with blade arm screws. Once both screws are attached for a blade arm, securely tighten them.
Note: Remember the screws saved from removing shipping blocks; they are needed here.
Diagrams on page 8 illustrate blade and blade arm installation.
Assembling the Light
- Step 1-3: Screw light kit screws halfway into the light kit adapter (any two holes). Feed the wire plug through the center hole of the upper switch housing. Wrap keyhole slots around the screws and twist counterclockwise. Insert a third screw and tighten all three screws securely.
- Step 4: Connect the plugs from the upper and lower switch housings, aligning colored markings.
- Step 5-6: Partially install two light kit screws. Align notches on the lower switch housing with screws on the upper housing. Twist the lower housing clockwise to lock. Install the last light kit screw and tighten all three screws securely.
FAN FALL HAZARD
Make sure all three screws are tight to secure the upper switch housing to the mounting plate, and to secure the lower switch housing to the upper switch housing.
Diagrams on page 9 illustrate light assembly steps.
Installing the Bulbs and Glass
Repeat x3: Install a bulb into each socket. Use bulbs of the same wattage when replacing.
To install the shade: First, loosen the thumb screws. Raise the shade to the light fixture. Tighten all thumbscrews securely.
GLASS FALL HAZARD
To prevent SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH, make sure that glass is properly secured.
Hunter Pro Tip: To install your fan without a light kit, visit HunterFan.com/FAQs and click "How do I install my fan without the light kit?"

Installing the Pull Chains
Feed the pull chains from the fan and light switches down through the holes in the upper switch housing. Remove the plastic chain guard. Attach the pull chain pendants to the light and fan pull chains.
Repeat x2
Note: The fan pull chain controls speed (high to off). The light pull chain controls the light fixture (on and off).
Diagrams on page 10 illustrate pull chain installation.
Reversing the Fan
Ceiling fans operate in two directions: downdraft (counterclockwise rotation) for a cooling breeze, and updraft (clockwise rotation) for indirect airflow to move warm air downward.
To change direction: Turn the fan off and let it stop completely. Slide the reversing switch to the opposite position. Restart the fan.
Diagrams on page 10 illustrate the reversing switch and airflow directions.
