Installation Guide
1. Prepare the Door and Check Dimensions
Ensure your door is compatible. A compatible door has a standard deadbolt mounted separately from the handle below it. Incompatible door types include Rim Lock, Mortise Lock, and Integrated Interior locks.
If drilling a new door, use the supplied template and find complete instructions at kwikset.com/doorprep.
Door Measurements:
- Hole Diameter: 2-1/8" (54 mm) or 1-1/2" (38 mm). Note: 1-1/2" holes may require additional preparation.
- Backset: 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" (60 or 70 mm).
- Door Edge Hole: 1" (25 mm).
- Door Thickness: Between 1-3/8" and 2" (35 mm and 51 mm).
Remove your existing deadbolt from the door.
2. Install the Latch and Strike
Extend the latch bolt.
Hold the latch in front of the door hole, ensuring the latch face is flush against the door edge.
Check if the D-shaped hole is centered in the door hole. If YES, no adjustment is needed. If NO, rotate the latch face as shown to extend the latch.
Install the latch using the provided screws (03809). Use longer screws if holes are worn. Ensure "UP" is on top.
Install the strike on the door frame. Ensure the hole in the door frame is drilled at least 1" (25 mm) deep. Install longer screws closest to the door jamb (46780).
3. Install the Exterior Keypad
Determine the door hole diameter. If 1-1/2" (38 mm), install the Adapter Ring on the Exterior Assembly. If 2-1/8" (54 mm), the Adapter Ring is not needed.
Locate and keep screws (68272) for step 3D.
Remove the mounting plate from the interior assembly.
Install the exterior keypad and mounting plate. Support the exterior assembly during mounting plate installation. Route the cable underneath the latch, through the center hole, and into the bottom hole. Keep the assembly parallel to the door edge.
Ensure the torque blade is centered in the mounting plate hole. Tighten screws evenly, but do not over-tighten.
Insert the key and test the latch. If it does not extend or retract smoothly, adjust the screws. Remove the key when finished, ensuring the latch bolt is fully extended.
4. Install the Interior Assembly
Ensure the turnpiece shaft is pointing up. Remove the interior cover and battery pack from the interior assembly.
If the turnpiece shaft is pointing down, replace the cover, rotate the turnpiece until it clicks (applying force if needed), then remove the cover again.
Install the interior assembly onto the mounting plate. Ensure a tight cable connection. Route the excess cable flat inside the bottom of the interior housing.
Use screws (69316) to secure the assembly. Note: Three screws (69316) are reserved for Step 9. Ensure correct screws are used to avoid product damage.
5. Install Batteries and Perform Door Handing
Install 4 AA batteries into the battery pack, ensuring correct polarity. Use new, non-rechargeable alkaline batteries for best results.
With the door open, install the battery pack to initiate auto-handing. The latch will retract and extend to learn the door’s orientation. If the bolt does not move, check battery installation and retry.
The Status LED will indicate success (Green) or failure (Red). If unsuccessful, ensure correct installation, retry, or consult the Manual Door Handing section on page 4.
The lock will auto-hand again after the first use of the keypad or app to confirm orientation.
6. Add the Lock to Your Smart Home System
Initiate the pairing process with your smart home controller, following its instructions.
For SmartStart enabled products, scan the Z-Wave QR Code with a compatible controller.
If prompted, press button "A" on the lock interior once. The red LED will illuminate.
You may be prompted to enter the 5-digit PIN found on the interior assembly label.
If successful, rename the lock in your system. If unsuccessful, remove the lock from the controller, and repeat steps A-C. Consult kwikset.com/support for further assistance.
7. Add User Codes (250 Max)
It is recommended to manage user codes via your smart home system. For direct programming:
Ensure the door is open. Press the "Program" button once.
Enter the desired user code (4-8 digits, not a duplicate). Press the "Program" button again.
Programming Feedback:
- Success: Green light with one beep.
- Failure: Red light with three beeps. Reasons include duplicate codes, incorrect digit count, or no available code slots.
A mastercode can enhance security for programming and settings. Refer to the Programming and Troubleshooting Guide for details.
8. Test the Lock and Check Door Alignment
With the door open, insert the key and extend the latch. Ensure smooth operation.
Turn the key 180° to retract the latch. Ensure smooth retraction.
Close the door. Insert and rotate the key to lock. Ensure smooth locking.
Turn the key 180° to unlock. Ensure smooth unlocking.
If alignment issues persist, ensure the supplied latch and strike were used. For further troubleshooting, visit http://bit.ly/HC620jam or call Kwikset Support at 1-866-863-6584.
9. Install the Interior Cover
Install the interior cover, aligning the turnpiece shaft if necessary.
Install the cover using the remaining screws (69316). Ensure correct screws are used.
The battery pack and buttons are accessible by sliding up the window on the interior cover.
