Parts in the Box
- Latch and Strike Assembly
- Exterior Assembly
- Interior Assembly
- Levers and Screws
Step 1: Check Dimensions
Ensure your door meets the following specifications:
- Door Thickness: 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" (35 mm to 44 mm)
- Backset: 2-3/8" (60 mm) or 2-3/4" (70 mm)
- Note: If installing this lever below or above an existing lock, ensure the distance between holes is at least 6-1/2" (165 mm).
Step 2: Adjust the Backset of Latch (if needed)
Hold the latch in front of the door hole with the latch face flush against the door edge.
- If the latch holes are centered in the door hole, no adjustment is required. Proceed to Step 3.
- If the latch holes are NOT centered, adjust the latch mechanism as shown in the "Latch Adjustment" diagram.
Step 3: Install Latch
For doors with a chiseled edge, ensure the latch is oriented correctly. For doors without a chiseled edge, also ensure the latch is oriented correctly.
- If the door edge is chiseled, a wood block may be used to assist.
- Secure the latch with two screws (labeled A and N, 2x).
Step 4: Install Keypad and Mounting Plate
Route the cable over the latch mechanism.
- Keep the mounting plate parallel to the edge of the door.
- Tighten the two screws (labeled S, 2x) evenly.
Step 5: Install Spindle
Insert the spindle, ensuring the rounded edge faces the latch.
Step 6: Disassemble Interior Assembly and Load Battery Pack
Carefully disassemble the interior assembly. Ensure correct polarity when inserting batteries. Use new, non-rechargeable alkaline batteries only. Do not install the battery pack into the interior assembly yet.
Step 7: Z-Wave locks only: Perform the Inclusion process
Note: "Inclusion" is the process of adding the lock to a Z-Wave or ZigBee controller.
- For ZigBee locks, perform the Inclusion process after installation is complete. Refer to "Z-Wave and ZigBee Systems" for details.
- Hold the interior assembly a maximum of 12" (305 mm) from your Z-Wave controller.
- Initiate the Inclusion process at the controller. Refer to your Z-Wave control system instructions.
- Press button "A" on the lock one time to include it. The controller and lock must remain stationary for 60 seconds.
- If Inclusion is unsuccessful, initiate the Exclusion process at the controller, then press button "A" on the lock. Repeat the Inclusion process after exclusion.
Step 8: Install Interior Assembly
Push the excess cable back into the door as you install the interior assembly (labeled G).
- The turnbutton may need to be turned to install the interior assembly.
- Ensure a tight cable connection.
Step 9: Install Levers
Insert the levers (labeled L/M). Ensure the lever handle faces away from the latch.
- Tighten the pre-installed set screw (labeled Q) on each lever.
Step 10: Install Strike
Close the door and test the latch in the strike.
- If the latch is loose in the strike, adjust the strike tang.
- If the small bolt of the latch enters the strike hole incorrectly, reposition the strike.
- Secure the strike with two screws (labeled P, 2x).
Step 11: Program the Lock
Programming instructions are located on the reverse side of this document.
Step 12: Install Battery Cover and Re-key the Lock
Install the battery cover. Keep part 'Q' in a safe place, as it is needed for additional programming.
If needed, re-key the lock to work with your existing key. Refer to the supplied SmartKey Re-key instructions for more information.
Template
If your door requires drilling, cut out the template and place it on the exterior side of the door. Complete door drilling instructions are available on the SmartCode lever page of www.kwikset.com.
Template Dimensions:
- Door Thickness: 1-3/8" (35 mm) to 1-3/4" (44 mm)

D. Programming Codes
a. Programming Information:
It is recommended to add/delete user codes via your Z-Wave or ZigBee control system. If not possible, use the lock's programming functions.
User Codes Requirements:
- Each user code must be unique, between 4 and 8 digits.
- A total of 30 user codes can be programmed.
How the Keypad Works:
Each button represents two numbers (e.g., button 1/2). Press the button once for either number. Example code: 1-2-5-6-8.
Programming Behavior:
- Successful Programming: Keypad flashes green once, one beep.
- Unsuccessful Programming: Keypad flashes red three times, three beeps.
Timeout:
If no button is pressed for five seconds, the system times out. Restart the procedure.
b. Enabling and Adding a Mastercode (Optional):
A mastercode (4-8 digits) adds security for adding/deleting user codes. It cannot unlock the door unless also programmed as a user code.
- Press and HOLD the Program button until the keypad flashes green (approx. 5 seconds).
- Enter the new mastercode.
- Press the Lock button once.
- Re-enter the mastercode.

- Press the Lock button once.
If Unsuccessful: Ensure the user code is not a duplicate and is 4-8 digits. Ensure a valid mastercode was entered in step 2 (if applicable).
Test Code: While the door is open, test the user code to ensure it unlocks the door.
d. Deleting User Codes:
Override a user code by adding a different user code in the same position. Test the old code to confirm it's inactive. For a full reset, perform a factory reset (Section H).

I. Important Safeguards
- Read all instructions in their entirety.
- Familiarize yourself with all warning and caution statements.
- Remind all family members of safety precautions.
- Restrict access to your lock's back panel and routinely check your settings to ensure they have not been altered without your knowledge.
- Protect your user codes and mastercode.
- Dispose of used batteries according to local laws and regulations.
CAUTION:
Prevent unauthorized entry. Since anyone with access to the back panel can change the user codes, you must restrict access to the back panel and routinely check the user codes to ensure they have not been altered without your knowledge. The use of a mastercode can help protect your system's settings.
