Calibration
The thermometer has a calibration feature, though it is typically pre-calibrated at the factory. Recalibration may be needed after extended use if readings seem inaccurate.
Calibration Procedure:
- Prepare an ice-water mixture: Fill a container (preferably insulated) with ice cubes (at least 70% volume) and top with cold distilled or purified water (no more than 30% volume).
- Stir the mixture and let it sit for 10 minutes to reach temperature equilibrium.
- Turn on the thermometer and hold the LOCK/CAL button for 5 seconds to enter calibration mode. 'CAL' will flash, followed by the temperature reading flashing.
- Immerse the probe into the ice-water mixture, ensuring it does not touch the container sides. Wait for the reading to drop to its lowest point, ideally around 32°F (0°C).
- If the reading is not within 28°F to 36°F (-2°C to +2°C), remake the ice-water mixture and repeat steps.
- Hold the LOCK/CAL button for 3 seconds to confirm calibration and exit the mode.
Calibration mode is active for 15 seconds. If not completed, the thermometer will exit automatically.
Undo Calibration
To reset the calibration to the default factory setting:
- Enter calibration mode by holding the LOCK/CAL button for 5 seconds.
- When the temperature reading flashes, press and hold the LIGHT button for 3 seconds. The reading will stop flashing, indicating the default setting has been restored.
Helpful Hints
- For measuring multiple foods, cool the probe tip with cold water between readings.
- Wipe the probe tip clean between readings, especially when measuring different foods.
- This thermometer is designed for temporary, hand-held use. Do not use it in an oven. Avoid leaving it in extremely hot foods or liquids (above 572°F / 300°C) for more than one minute.
- Always take readings from the thickest part of the meat. Avoid bones and heavy fat areas. If the tip touches bone or fat, or is not deep enough, take a second reading for accuracy.
- Not intended for use by persons aged 12 or under.
Care of Your Thermometer
- Avoid touching the stainless steel probe during or immediately after use, as it may be hot.
- Do not expose the unit to extreme temperatures (high or low), as this can damage electronic parts and plastics.
- Do not leave the thermometer inserted in food during cooking.
- Remove the battery if the thermometer will be stored for more than four months.
- Do not subject the unit to excessive force, shock, dust, temperature, or humidity.
- Do not immerse the unit in water.
- Do not remove any screws.
- Do not dispose of the unit in fire, as it may explode.
