Portable Remote Controlled Dog Training Collars

Product Safety and Health Statements

Proper e-collar use

iQ Pet e-collars are designed for dog behavior modification only. They are not intended for human use or use on other animals. iQ Pet and Dogtra Company disclaim any liability for improper use.

Aggressive dogs

iQ Pet strongly recommends consulting a dog training professional when using an e-collar to correct aggressive dogs.

Interference with other electronic devices

iQ Pet's technology filtering system minimizes interference with other electronic devices like garage door openers or mobile phones. The digital microprocessor uses thousands of unique codes to prevent frequency match-up with other iQ Pet e-collars. iQ Pet advises consulting a physician if using the e-collar with medical devices.

Inadvertent activation

If the constant button is held for 12 seconds or more, the unit automatically shuts down. It reactivates when the button is released and pressed again.

Proper fit

A loose receiver/collar can move on the dog's neck, causing skin irritation from contact points. If too loose, contact points may not make proper contact, leading to inconsistent stimulation.

Duration your dog can wear the unit

Leaving the receiver/collar in the same location for extended periods can cause skin irritation. Reposition the receiver/collar occasionally to move contact points. Check for skin irritation each time the unit is used. Consult a veterinarian if your dog shows signs of skin irritation.

Reaction to the stimulation

Each dog has a unique tolerance and reaction to stimulation. Observe your dog's reaction to find the correct stimulation level. The level may vary with situation and distractions. A distracted dog typically requires higher stimulation.

Training Methods

E-collars can be used with various methods. For concerns about iQ Pet's training methods, consult a dog training professional.

Overview

Handheld Transmitter Components

Receiver/Collar Components

Understanding your training system

1. How to turn on/off the unit

To activate the receiver/collar, place the red dot on the back of the handheld transmitter onto the red dot on the receiver/collar. Hold them together until the LED light on the receiver/collar turns on.

To deactivate, repeat the same procedure, holding the two red dots together momentarily. The LED light will turn red briefly, indicating the receiver/collar is off.

The handheld transmitter does not have an on/off switch; it activates only when buttons are pressed.

2. How the buttons work

There are three buttons on the front of the handheld transmitter:

1-Dog/2-Dog Selector Switch

This switch is located to the left of the Rheostat Intensity Dial.

3. How to fit the receiver/collar on the dog

The receiver/collar should be fitted so that the surgical stainless steel contact points press firmly against the dog's skin. You should be able to fit one or two fingers snugly between the contact points and your dog's skin. When properly fitted, the receiver/collar should not move. The best location for the receiver/collar box is on either side of the dog's windpipe.

A loose fit can cause the receiver/collar to move, leading to skin irritation. If too tight, it may cause difficulty breathing for the dog.

4. Finding the right stimulation level for my dog

Stimulation level is controlled by the stimulation intensity dial, ranging from 0 (lowest) to 100 (highest). Adjustment depends on your dog's temperament and threshold. Always start at the lowest level and gradually increase. An appropriate level is when the dog shows a mild negative reaction, such as jerking or tensing neck muscles. Adjust the intensity upwards if the dog's attitude changes due to excitement or distraction.

5. To maximize the distance

The iQ Plus has a 400-yard range. Range may vary based on how the handheld transmitter is held. Hold it away from your body for maximum range. Keep the unit properly charged for maximum signal strength.

Avoid touching the antenna as this may substantially decrease the range.

Visual representation of holding positions for range: A person holding the transmitter high above their head (Maximum Range), a person holding it at chest level (Typical Range), and a person holding it close to their body (Minimum Range).

6. Checking the status using the LED indicator

When the receiver/collar is on and ready, the LED flashes every 4 seconds. The LED glows steadily on both the handheld transmitter and receiver/collar when any buttons are pressed.

The LED color indicates battery life:

If the unit continues to operate when the LED is red, it will eventually shut down.

7. Charging the battery

  1. Remove the rubber plug temporarily and plug in the charger.
  2. Plug the adapter's power plug into a standard AC wall outlet. The LED will glow red.
  3. When charging is finished, the LED will glow green. Unplug the adapter's power plug from the AC wall outlet and disconnect the charger from the unit.
  4. Place the rubber plug back in the battery charging receptacle.

Note: The receiver/collar remains fully waterproof even if the rubber plug is not closed, but closing it prevents dirt from entering.

Warning

  1. Fully charge the unit before first use.
  2. Do not charge batteries near flammable substances.
  3. Fully charge batteries if the unit is to be stored for one month or more without use.
  4. Always use iQ Pet approved chargers. Improper chargers may cause the LED to flash amber or not light up.

8. Code Setting

1-Dog code setting

  1. Ensure the receiver/collar is off and the Rheostat intensity dial on the handheld transmitter is set to "0". On the handheld transmitter, slide the dog selector switch left to "I".
  2. Place the red dot on the back of the handheld transmitter onto the red dot on the receiver/collar. Hold them together for 5 seconds. Release when the green LED blinks rapidly on the receiver/collar.
  3. With the handheld transmitter, press the Nick and Constant buttons simultaneously. Code setting is successful if the receiver/collar vibrates when the pager button is pressed on the handheld transmitter.

2-Dog code setting

  1. Ensure the receiver/collar is off and the Rheostat intensity dial on the handheld transmitter is set to "0". On the handheld transmitter, slide the dog selector switch right to "II".

General Training Tips

Getting started with your iQ Plus

Your dog should know basic obedience commands before starting training with the iQ Plus. Dogs learn by being shown a command, followed by repetition. As proficiency increases, introduce distractions and different locations. Combine positive and negative reinforcement for a well-mannered dog.

Obedience training on the leash

Your dog must fully understand obedience commands (sit, stay, here, heel, kennel) before using the e-collar for reinforcement. A leash attached to a standard collar is used to "teach" basic commands. A tug on the leash/collar reinforces the command. When the dog complies, use positive reinforcement/praise. Once commands are understood, the e-collar can reinforce them.

Beginning electric collar training

Once your dog understands leash obedience commands, begin electric collar training. Continue obedience drills with the dog wearing the electric collar. Light stimulation (nick or constant) is applied when a command is given, and removed when the dog complies. Through repetition, the dog learns to turn off stimulation by performing the command. E-collar training is a form of negative reinforcement, similar to leash and standard collar training. When the dog complies, use praise/positive reinforcement. The final step is the avoidance phase, where the dog learns to avoid stimulation by performing commands. After training, the electric collar serves as a reminder when the dog doesn't comply. Keep initial training sessions short and positive, especially for young dogs with short attention spans.

How much stimulation to use

Always start with low stimulation levels and increase based on your dog's disposition and the situation. Using only enough stimulation creates a more controllable and less stressful environment for the dog.

Maintenance

Basic maintenance

Ensure rubber plugs are always secured when the receiver/collar is in use. After each session, inspect the unit for missing parts or casing damage. Broken casing may affect the waterproof guarantee. Rinse the receiver/collar after each session to clean dirt or debris.

Storage maintenance

The unit should be fully charged before extended storage. During storage, charge the unit monthly and once before first use. When traveling, store units in room or slightly warmer temperatures. Do not transport the unit in extreme climates.

Troubleshooting Guide

1. My dog is not reacting to the receiver/collar.

2. The LED indicator light comes on, but I do not feel any stimulation.

3. The handheld transmitter has no range, or stimulation is less when the dog is farther away.

4. My units are not holding a charge.

5. My dog has skin irritation.
