Purpose and Scope

The purpose is to provide a uniform standard specification for a thermoplastic structural fire helmet. The scope covers performance criteria, design, construction, and materials necessary for structural firefighting helmets.

General Features and Standards

Helmets are designed to mitigate adverse environmental effects on the firefighter's head. The MSA Cairns 880 Traditional Fire Helmet meets requirements from NFPA 1971:2013 (or current edition), US-OSHA 1910.156, and CAL-OSHA. Eye/face protection complies with ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 and NFPA 1971.

Construction and Components

Helmet Shell: Classic American Fire Service style, high-temperature, flame- and chip-resistant thermoplastic. Available in standard colors. Features edge trim with an aluminum core and a rear helmet hanger.
Front Holder: Collapsible brass front-piece holder for identification shields, with a thermoplastic mounting bracket.
Impact Cap: Rigid cell, high-temperature urethane foam for thermal and impact protection.
Head Suspension: Six-way system with nylon straps attached to the impact cap.
Sizing Adjustment: Ratchet adjustment system for headband, adjustable in 1/8" increments (size range 5-5/8 to 7-5/8).
Comfort Liner: Removable, machine-washable headband cushion and ratchet pad made of flame-resistant flannel.
Chin Strap: Constructed of spun-Nomex webbing with a quick-release buckle.
Ear/Neck Protection: Full-cut earlap made of Nomex and flame-resistant flannel, removable and upgradable.

Options and Accessories

Retro-Reflective Trim: Eight trahedron-shaped pieces for visibility, available in various colors.
Eye Protection: Options include a wrap-around faceshield, a goggle system, and a Bourke Eye Shield (note: Bourke Eye Shield does not provide impact protection and is not compliant with ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 or NFPA 1971).
Accessories: Customizable front pieces and other accessories are available.

Warranty and Maintenance

MSA warrants Cairns Fire Helmets manufactured on or after January 1, 2015, for ten (10) years against defects in materials and workmanship. Details are available in specific warranty documents.
