Safety Regulations
Correct Use
The F2 X-TREM helmet is a multi-purpose helmet suitable for various applications according to the following standards:
- EN 16471:2014: Helmets for wildland fire fighting
- EN 16473:2014: Helmets for technical rescue
- EN 12492:2012: Helmets for mountaineers
The safety provided by the helmet is ensured only when it is properly assembled and correctly fitted. Removable parts must not be worn separately. The validity of the EC type-examination certificate may be voided if the helmet is fitted with personal protective equipment or accessories not supplied by the helmet manufacturer. This helmet conforms to retention requirements when the chin strap is worn and adjusted as per instructions. The helmet absorbs impact energy by partial destruction or damage; even if not apparent, any helmet subjected to a severe impact must be replaced. Do not damage, modify, or remove original components unless recommended by MSA. Helmets should not be adapted for fitting attachments in unapproved ways. This helmet is not suitable as a motorcycle helmet and is not intended for protection during structural fire fighting or fire entrapment.
It is imperative to read and observe this operating manual, especially the safety instructions and information for use and operation. National regulations applicable in the user's country must also be considered for safe use. Any alternative use or use outside this specification is considered non-compliance, particularly unauthorized alterations or commissioning work not performed by MSA or authorized personnel.
Wildland Fire Fighting
Protection of the upper head primarily against impact, penetration, heat, flame, and burning embers during fire fighting and associated activities (e.g., wood cutting) in wildland environments.
Technical Rescue
Protection of the upper head primarily against mechanical hazards such as impact and penetration, flame, electrical, and chemical hazards during operations including, but not limited to:
- Road traffic collisions, railway incidents (e.g., extrication)
- Working in and around collapsed structures
- Natural disasters (flood, earthquakes, etc.)
- Accidents with hazardous materials (e.g., use under a chemical protective suit)
- First aid/ambulance operations, law enforcement
- High angle rescue

Adjusting the Helmet

Ratchet Adjustment
The headband covers three sizes: S, M, L. To adjust the headband size:
- Set to matching head size.
- Tighten (A) or loosen (B) the headband for further adjustment. (Diagram shows a headband with adjustment points labeled A and B, indicating tightening and loosening mechanisms.)
- Adjust the headband with the front snaps (2 positions, P1 and P2). (Diagram shows a helmet interior with front snaps labeled P1 and P2, indicating two possible positions for adjustment.)
- Adapt the helmet wearing height: Guide the two velcro fasteners of the ratchet net through the openings in the rear interface and adjust as shown. (Diagram shows the rear of the helmet with velcro fasteners being guided through openings in the rear interface.)
Chin Strap Adjustment
There are two types of chin straps: EN16471/16473 and EN12492.
- Chin strap EN16471/16473: Adjust left and right front straps (1) at the same time. Adjust left and right rear straps (2) at the same time. (Diagram shows a chin strap with front straps labeled 1 and rear straps labeled 2, indicating adjustment points.)
- Chin strap EN12492: (Diagram shows a chin strap with various adjustment points, similar to the EN16471/16473 but with a different configuration.)
Replacing Spare Parts
Chin Strap Replacement
To replace the chin strap:
- Remove the rear clamp (c). (Diagram shows the chin strap with a clamp labeled 'c' at the back.)
- Remove the front points (a) and (b). (Diagram shows the chin strap with front attachment points labeled 'a' and 'b'.)

Carefully remove the ratchet headband by undoing the front and rear snaps from their slots. (Diagrams show the process of detaching the ratchet headband from the helmet shell.)
Suspension System Replacement
To replace the suspension system:
- Remove the straps by releasing them from their fastening points. (Diagram shows the suspension system with straps being detached.)
- Fit the suspension system into the four slots; the shortest straps go into the slots in the front. (Diagram shows the suspension system being inserted into the helmet shell's slots.)
- During re-assembly, fit the strap behind the bracket. (Diagram shows a strap being fitted behind a bracket during re-assembly.)
Goggles
Goggles Use
Safety goggles are used to protect the eyes against dust and projections.
- Don with both hands. (Diagram shows a person putting on goggles with both hands.)
After use, store goggles inside the helmet, not on top of it.
Attaching the Goggles
Protection Goggles, Model RESPONDER (GA3027B)
The elastic strap includes an adjustable buckle to adjust the pressure of the goggles on the wearer's face, optimizing comfort and protection. (Diagrams illustrate how to attach and adjust the RESPONDER goggles to the helmet, showing the elastic strap and buckle mechanism.)
Use with Full Face Masks
The helmet has two holes (a) to accommodate the brackets of full face masks. (Diagram shows the side of the helmet with a hole labeled 'a' for attaching full face mask brackets.)
Use with Accessories
The helmet has two holes (a) to accommodate standard MSA visors and hearing protection. (Diagram shows the side of the helmet with a hole labeled 'a' for attaching visors and hearing protection, and a separate image of SORDIN XTREM hearing protection.)
Maintenance and Cleaning
For cleaning, maintenance, or disinfection, use only substances that have no adverse effect on the helmet or wearer, applied according to manufacturer's instructions. The usable life of the helmet is affected by material type and environmental conditions. Consult the manufacturer for recommendations.
Do not apply paint, stickers, hydrocarbon-based cleaning products, or solvents to the helmet or visors to prevent material damage.
To maximize helmet lifetime:
- Store the helmet in a proper storage bag and/or in a closed cabinet to avoid extended exposure to cold, humidity, exhaust fumes, etc.
- Clean the helmet (shell and internal components) after use before storing.
Checks After Each Use
After each use, check every part of the helmet, especially all fixing points:
- Correct anchor points used
- No evident wear
- No fractures or cracks
Check that the helmet fit is always correct.
Maintenance
Replace any damaged parts only with original MSA parts, as only these are authorized and ensure helmet performance. The helmet absorbs impact energy by partial destruction or damage; even if not apparent, any helmet subjected to a severe impact must be replaced.
Cleaning and Disinfection
Plastic Components and Inner Padding
- Use soapy water and a soft cloth. Do not use detergent, solvent-based products, or abrasive materials.
Cleaning the Neck Curtains
Neck curtains made of Nomex, wool:
- Cleaning at 30°C with a gentle detergent.
Aluminised neck curtain:
- Cleaning at 30°C with water, using a sponge.
Transport
Store the goggles inside the helmet (out of use position). The helmet can be stored in an MSA protective bag (GA1043).
Discard
The helmet must be treated as ordinary industrial waste/non-hazardous waste according to local regulations. For further information, contact MSA.
