Installation Instructions
Step 1: Mark Door
For Single Door or Pair without Mullion:
Locate and Mark Horizontal and Vertical Reference Centerlines as shown. (LHR door shown, preparation is typical for both door hands).
Diagram Description: Shows a door edge with reference lines and measurements for marking the door for the exit device. Key measurements include 2-3/4" (70mm) from the door edge for the device centerline. It also indicates the bottom bolt retraction to 1/8" (3mm) above the floor strike, advising to account for floor covering.
Step 2: Prepare Door
A. Locate the "Device Template", aligning the VERTICAL REFERENCE and HORIZONTAL REFERENCE LINES on the door and template. Tape the template to the door face.
B. Extend the centerline of the Rod & Strikes from the "Device Template" to the door top and bottom, on the door face.
C. Locate the "Top Strike" and "Floor Strike" templates, aligned on the Vertical Reference. Tape templates in place.
Note: An auxiliary door marker is included to verify correct door preparation. Reinforced doors and frames with factory-made cutouts are recommended.
D. Locate and tape the Trim Template to the door (refer to instructions packed with Trim).
E. Mark and prepare holes:
- Device: (2) 1/4-20 Machine Screws (for Metal reinforced doors only) OR (2) 3/8" (10mm) Dia. Sex Nuts & Bolts.
- Top Strike: (2) 10-24 Machine Screws OR (2) #10 Wood Screws. Note: A third screw is ONLY to be used to lock the Strike in final position (Step 8C).
- Bottom Strike: 5/8" (16mm) diameter x 3/4" (19mm) deep hole.
Diagram Description: Illustrates the process of aligning templates on the door, marking hole locations for the device, top strike, and bottom strike. It shows the LHR door orientation and the placement of reference lines.
Step 3: Size Device
The device must be field cut to size unless the standard opening and device are 36" (0.91m) or 48" (1.22m).
Diagram Description: Shows how to align the device with the door edge and horizontal line, and how to mark the cutoff line on the rod. It includes minimum clearance requirements: 1-3/8" (35mm) to the hinge edge and 3/8" (32mm) to the stile edge. It also shows the dogging hole and a check for gap between the end cover and touch bar before cutting.
Step 4: Rod Assembly & Preliminary Adjustment
A. Remove the door from the opening. Set the device flat, device side up. (Do not hang the door until Step 8 of the device installation sheet).
B. Set the length of the Top Rod Assembly (refer to Detail 1).
C. Connect Top & Bottom Rods to the Arm/Bracket Assemblies using (2) Cotter Pins each.
D. Align the Rod Setup Gauge over the Device Cutouts and Centerlines. Tape the Gauge to the door face.
E. Connect the top latch to the Rod Assembly.
F. Set the Top Latch and Rod Assembly in place on the door, maintaining a 1/8" (3mm) location from the top as shown.
G. Align Yoke Pin holes in the Arm and Bracket Assembly with the Alignment Hole in the Rod Setup Gauge. Adjust the top Latch and Rod Assembly for proper alignment. The latchbolt must be extended. (See Detail 2).
H. Thread the bottom bolt into the Bottom Rod Assembly. Set the Bottom Bolt Rod Assembly in place on the door. Align the Yoke pin hole in the Bottom Arm and Bracket Assembly with the Alignment Hole in the Rod Setup Gauge. Adjust the Bottom Bolt until it protrudes 3/8" (10mm) plus the gap from Step 1, past the bottom edge of the door. Ensure the Bottom Bolt is fully extended. (See Detail 3).
Diagram Description: Detail 1 shows the Top Rod Assembly with various length options and how to drill a new hole if needed. Detail 2 illustrates the correct (latchbolt extended) and incorrect (latchbolt retracted) alignment of the top latch. Detail 3 shows the required protrusion of the bottom bolt (Gap + 3/8"). It also shows the overall assembly of rods, arms, and yoke pins.
Step 5: Install Rods
A. Slide Rod Assemblies into the door.
B. Attach Top Latch and Bottom Bolt Case with (4) #10-24 X 1/2" PFHMS.
C. Thread Set Screw into Yoke Pins (Insert With Hex Socket End Inside Pin). Thread #8-32 X 2" PPHMS Temporary Screws into the slotted end of Yoke Pins, until seated to the Hex Head Set Screw. (See Detail 1).
D. Install (2) Yoke Pin Assemblies into Arm and Bracket Assemblies.
Diagram Description: Detail 1 shows the Yoke Pin Assembly, including the set screw and temporary screw placement. The main diagram shows the rod assemblies being inserted and attached to the device components.
Step 6: Install Device
A. Mount trim (follow instructions packed with trim).
B. Seat device in place using the Temporary Screws from Step 5 to position the Yoke Pins to the latch head. Install E-Ring into Yoke Pin Grooves. (See Detail 1).
C. Fasten the device Latch Head using (2) 1/4-20 PPHMS or 3/8" (10mm) dia. SNB.
D. Remove Temporary Screws. Note: Tighten Yoke Pins after removal of Temporary screws.
E. Center the end of the device on the horizontal reference line of the door. Using the End Clamp as a template, locate the end clamp mounting holes.
F. Prepare end clamp holes and mount End Clamp using (2) 1/4-20 PPHMS or 3/8" (10mm) SNB.
Diagram Description: Shows the device being seated, E-ring installation, fastening the latch head, and mounting the end clamp. Key measurements for the end clamp are indicated (1/2" or 13mm from the edge).
Step 7: Install Strikes
A. Rehang the door plumb and true to the opening.
B. Set strike roller between tripping lever and bolt. DO NOT PRELOAD THE BOLT. Shim strike as needed.
Note: Rods should move freely inside the door. Bolts extend automatically and should deadlock when the door closes and the top strike hits the tripping lever. The top bolt should retract flat. The bottom bolt should travel 1/2" and engage 3/8" into the strike in the down position, without dragging on the floor surface in the up position. Test device action by touchbar, by trim, and by dogging. Adjust as needed.
Diagram Description: Detail A shows the upper strike installation, including shim placement and fastener details (2) 10-24 x 3/4" PFHMS. Detail B shows the bottom strike installation. It notes that the third screw for the top strike must be installed after adjustment. It also reiterates that the bottom bolt retracts to 1/8" (3mm) above the floor strike.
Step 8: Rod Adjustment for Proper Bolt Throw
A. Use a 3/32" hex wrench to loosen set screws B1 and B2.
B. Adjust the top rod first with adjusting screw C1. With the device in dogged position (panic devices) or touchbar fully depressed (fire devices), adjust the top rod so that the top latchbolt is flush and the hold back feature is engaged. Lengthen the top rod an additional 1/2 turn for proper latchbolt positioning.
Note: If adjusting screws bottom out before proper device operation, the door and device must be removed so larger adjustments can be made by threading the rod in or out, or by moving the cotter pin to a different hole in the rod (See Installation Instructions Step 4).
C. Adjust the bottom rod with adjusting screw C2. With the top latch retracted in hold back position, and touchbar dogged or fully depressed, adjust the bottom rod so that the deadbolt clears the strike by 1/16".
D. Check device operation by opening and closing the door. An additional minor adjustment may be required for full retraction and correct strike engagement.
Note: To avoid thread damage and provide positive locking, ensure set screws engage flats on adjusting screws.
E. After acceptable device function, install the third screw in the top strike to lock the strike in position using (2) 10-24 x 3/4" PFHMS.
F. Install the device cover and end cap with (2) 8-32 PFHMS each.
Diagram Description: Shows the adjustment points (C1, C2) and set screws (B1, B2) on the rods. It indicates "LONGER" and "SHORTER" adjustments for both rods and the required bolt engagement.
Maintenance
- Periodically remove covers and coat mechanisms with a silicone-based lubricant. This is particularly required in corrosive environments for proper product function.
- Check mounting fasteners periodically. Retighten if found loose. Apply screw locking compound (available at automotive part stores) or change part fasteners if screws continue to back out.
- Periodic checks (and adjustments) of strikes are required to compensate for changes in the opening (e.g., door sagging).
