DOD Meatbox SubSynth
Product Manual and Specifications
Product Overview
The DOD Meatbox SubSynth is a unique effects pedal designed to add deep, synthesized sub-harmonic tones and octave effects to your instrument's signal. Its distinctive red casing and straightforward control layout make it a recognizable addition to any pedalboard.
Visual Description: The pedal is housed in a vibrant red metal enclosure. Four rotary knobs are positioned on the top panel, labeled OCTAVE, OUTPUT, SUB, and LOW. Below these knobs, the DOD logo and "MEATBOX SUBSYNTH" are prominently displayed. A blue LED indicator light is situated below the controls, and a footswitch is located at the bottom center. Input and Output jacks are found on the sides, labeled "IN" and "OUT" respectively. A small graphic of a fly is printed on the lower right side of the pedal.
Controls and Features
- 1. OCTAVE: Adjusts the amount of low octave being added to the signal.
- 2. OUTPUT: Adjusts the overall output level of the effect.
- 3. SUB: Adjusts the amount of synthesized sub-harmonic effect added to the signal.
- 4. LOW: Adjusts the low frequency content of the overall effect.
WARNING: Start with the OUTPUT and LOW controls at minimum and gradually increase their level to avoid possible speaker damage.
- 5. INPUT: Connect your instrument here.
- 6. FOOTSWITCH: Turns the effect on and off.
- 7. LED: Illuminates when the effect is enabled.
- 8. OUTPUT: Connect to the next pedal or your amplifier. This output can route a dry, unprocessed signal (Ring) and the processed signal (Tip) simultaneously to an amplifier and other effects using a TRS 'Y' cable.
- Tip = Octave+Sub
- Ring = Dry
- Sleeve = Ground
Using the Meatbox SubSynth
Placement in an effects chain can significantly impact the sound. Bassists often prefer placing the Meatbox SubSynth at the beginning of their effects chain. Guitarists may find it more effective after distortion effects or closer to the end of the chain.
A typical effects signal chain often follows this order: Distortion effects first, then Modulation effects (like Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo), and finally Time-based effects (like Delay and Reverb). Experimentation with different effect placements is encouraged to achieve desired sonic results.

- Do not block ventilation openings; install according to manufacturer's instructions.
- Do not install near heat sources like radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other heat-producing apparatus.
- Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.
- Unplug during lightning storms or when unused for long periods.
- Do not defeat the safety purpose of polarized or grounding-type plugs. Consult an electrician if the plug does not fit your outlet.
- Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched.
- Use only with specified carts, stands, or tables. Exercise caution when moving carts/apparatus combinations to avoid tip-over injuries.
Servicing and Power
Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel for any damage, including power-supply cord issues, liquid spills, object intrusion, exposure to rain/moisture, abnormal operation, or drops.
Power Switch: The power switch does not disconnect the unit from the mains supply.
Mains Disconnect: The plug must remain readily operable. For rack-mount installations where the plug is inaccessible, an all-pole mains switch with at least 3mm contact separation per pole must be incorporated into the electrical installation.
For 240V supply, use a suitable CSA/UL certified power cord.
Power Cord Wiring (for units equipped with a power cord)
WARNING: This appliance must be connected to a mains socket outlet with a protective earthing connection.
The cores in the mains lead are colored according to the following code:
- GREEN AND YELLOW - EARTH
- BLUE – NEUTRAL
- BROWN - LIVE
If the colors in your appliance's mains lead do not correspond with the markings in your plug, proceed as follows:
- The GREEN AND YELLOW core must connect to the terminal marked E, the Earth symbol, or colored GREEN or GREEN AND YELLOW.
- The BLUE core must connect to the terminal marked N or colored BLACK.
- The BROWN core must connect to the terminal marked L or colored RED.
This equipment may require a different line cord or attachment plug depending on the available power source. If the attachment plug needs changing, refer servicing to qualified personnel who should consult the table below. The GREEN/YELLOW wire shall be connected directly to the unit's chassis.
CONDUCTOR | WIRE COLOR (Normal) | WIRE COLOR (Alt) |
---|---|---|
L (LIVE) | BROWN | BLACK |
N (NEUTRAL) | BLUE | WHITE |
E (EARTH GND) | GREEN/YEL | GREEN |
WARNING: If the ground connection is defeated, certain fault conditions in the unit or connected system can result in full line voltage between the chassis and earth ground. Severe injury or death can result if the chassis and earth ground are touched simultaneously.
