Sloan ESD-200/ESD-250 Sensor Operated Electronic Soap Dispenser Installation Instructions

Models: ESD-200 (Plug-in Transformer Powered), ESD-250 (Battery Powered)

Manufacturer: Sloan Valve Company

Product Overview

The Sloan ESD-200 and ESD-250 Sensor Operated Electronic Soap Dispenser offers hands-free, sanitary soap dispensing. It utilizes infrared technology to detect user presence and dispense hand washing soap. The ESD-200 is powered by an included plug-in transformer, while the ESD-250 uses four "D" cell batteries, eliminating the need for electrical wiring.

Each dispenser includes an integral spout and sensor assembly, control module, soap cartridge, and mounting hardware.

Soap Replenishment: Use Sloan Part No. ESD-217 (800 ml Bottle) or TC® OneShot® Soap Cartridges (TC Stock #401311). Order replacement cartridges at 1-866-700-CLEAN or visit www.optimasoap.com. Refills are also available through local distributors.

Limited Warranty

Sloan Valve Company warrants its ESD-200 and ESD-250 Electronic Soap Dispenser against defects in material and workmanship for a period of three years (one year for special finishes) from the date of purchase, under normal use and proper installation/servicing. Sloan Valve Company will, at its option, repair or replace defective parts returned at customer's cost. This warranty does not cover battery life for the ESD-250 model. Sloan Valve Company is not responsible for labor, transportation, or incidental costs, nor for consequential damages.

Prior to Installation

New Soap Dispenser Installation:

  • Locate mounting position using provided templates (refer to rough-in diagrams).
  • Ensure the dispenser does not interfere with anything above or below the lavatory/countertop.
  • Drill a 1-inch (25 mm) diameter hole in the countertop using the template.
  • Clean the area around the hole.

Replacing Existing Soap Dispenser:

  • Remove old components.
  • Clean the area.
  • Ensure the existing hole is between 15/16" and 1-1/4" in diameter.

Soap Dispenser Rough-In and Dimensions

The dispenser can often be mounted in the left or right hole of a 4" or 8" center-set sink, provided there is sufficient clearance for the motor and soap bottle underneath. If interference occurs, it must be installed through the countertop to the side of the sink.

Key Dimensions:

  • Spout Length: 5-3/8" (137 mm)
  • Spout Height: 4-1/4" (108 mm)
  • Hole Diameter Required: 1" (25 mm)
  • Shank Length Below Counter: Approximately 6-15/16" (176 mm)
  • Motor Assembly Height: Approximately 14-1/16" (357 mm)
  • Flange Nut Diameter: 1-5/8" (41 mm)

Mounting Location Template: A template is provided for accurate hole placement. Ensure the 1-1/2" (38 mm) dimension on the template is accurate when printing. The template guides drilling a 1" (25 mm) hole in the countertop.

Sink Mounting Options: The dispenser can be mounted on the side of a sink or in a 4" center-set sink, often in combination with Sloan faucets like the ESD-2080 or ESD-2085 using a special trim plate (ETF-299-A).

Important Note: Ensure the soap system does not interfere with sink and plumbing under the counter.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Install Spout

  1. Slide the rubber gasket onto the brass shank, aligning the gasket hole over the spring pin in the spout base (if applicable).
  2. Guide the brass shank and sensor cord through the hole in the counter.
  3. Position the spout to direct soap flow into the sink.
  4. Guide the sensor cord through the flange nut. Screw the flange nut onto the brass shank and tighten.

Step 2: Attach Motor Assembly

  1. Slide the C-clip to the open position.
  2. Place the motor assembly at the bottom of the shank.
  3. Rotate the motor housing to avoid interference with the lavatory bottom and existing plumbing. Position the motor housing so the red reset button is accessible.
  4. Push the motor assembly up into place and secure by closing the C-clip.
  5. Plug the sensor connector into the motor assembly and slide the rubber seal into place.

Step 3: Attach Battery Pack (Model ESD-250 Only)

  1. Place the battery pack in a convenient location, ensuring easy access.
  2. Secure the battery pack to the wall using screws and anchors. A foam gasket is applied to the back to seal screw holes.
  3. Install four alkaline "D" cell batteries.
  4. Connect the power cord from the battery pack to the cord from the motor assembly to activate the dispenser.
  5. Wall clips can be used to hold the power cord against the wall.

Step 4: Connect AC Power (Model ESD-200 Only)

  1. Connect the power cord from the transformer to the cord from the motor assembly. The transformer typically has a 24" (610 mm) cord.
  2. Plug the transformer into a 120 VAC wall receptacle to activate the dispenser.
  3. Wall clips can be used to hold the power cord against the wall.

Step 5: Install Soap Cartridge

Important: Do not handle the soap refill cartridge by its tube. Ensure the tubing is not loose or bent for proper operation.

  1. Unlock the pump on the refill cartridge by twisting counter-clockwise; the actuator will pop up.
  2. Guide the refill tube up through the bottom of the motor assembly.
  3. Lock the soap refill into place by turning clockwise a 1/4 turn.
  4. Press the refill reset button. This primes the soap refill bottle and initiates the counting mechanism.

Cartridge Capacities: 800 ml refill cartridge dispenses up to 1000 hand washes. 1600 ml refill cartridge dispenses up to 2000 hand washes. For 1600 ml cartridges, ensure the dipswitch on the motor assembly (above the Reset Button) is in the Down Position.

Operation

When a user's hands enter the sensor's effective range, infrared light is reflected back to the sensor receiver, activating the solenoid valve to dispense soap. The dispenser provides a single soap application.

  • Flashing Red Light: Indicates a low soap refill.
  • Flashing Yellow Light (Model ESD-250 only): Indicates low battery.

Troubleshooting Guide

I. Red LED Light Flashing:
A. Soap refill is low; check and replace as needed.
B. Reset button was not pressed after refill installation; press and release the reset button.
C. Holding the reset button for more than one second can keep the red light on. Press it quickly to turn it off.
II. Yellow LED Light Flashing (Model ESD-250 only):
A. Batteries are low; replace with four new "D" cell alkaline batteries.
III. Preventing Dispensing During Cleaning:
A. Place a finger over the upper right or left corner of the sensor lens.
IV. Dispenser Not Activating Properly:
A. Fluorescent lighting, especially dying or flickering tubes, can cause interference. Replace fluorescent tubes with cool, white tubes for optimal performance.
V. Dispenser Rotates Due to Spout Movement:
A. Tighten the existing flange nut on the spout shaft under the counter.
B. If the problem persists, order a second flange nut (ESD-620) from Sloan Valve.
VI. Soap Does Not Dispense:
A. Check power source connection.
B. Ensure batteries are installed correctly (Model ESD-250).
C. Verify the pump on the refill bottle is open (see Step 5A).
VII. Soap Not Dispensing When Waving Hands:
A. Hands must be held steady under the spout for activation.
VIII. Tube Pulls Out of Refill Bottle:
A. Tubes are secured to prevent removal. Ensure housekeeping staff does not lift or carry the bottle by the tube.

Care and Cleaning

Soap Dispenser:

Deactivate the dispenser by placing fingers or thumb over the sensor area (located in the upper right and left corners of the activation zone) while cleaning. Remove fingers/thumb after cleaning.

Chrome and Special Finishes:

Do not use abrasive or chemical cleaners (including chlorine bleach) as they can dull the finish or damage protective coatings. Use only soap and water, then wipe dry with a clean cloth or towel. Protect the faucet from cleaning fluids when cleaning bathroom tiles, as acids and cleaning fluids can discolor or remove chrome plating.

Soap Replacement and Information

When the soap bottle is empty, a new bottle must be used. The original bottle is not designed for refilling; altering it will void the warranty.
