InSinkErator Disposer Control Center Installation Manual - Model MS

This manual provides installation instructions for the InSinkErator Model MS Disposer Control Center, designed for use with InSinkErator Foodservice Disposers. The control center is CUL® US listed and its main functions include starting and stopping the disposer and initiating water flow.

Introduction and Features

The MS Control Center operates the disposer and controls water flow. Key features include a NEMA 4 enclosure for durability and push-button operation (Green for start, Red for stop).

Mounting the Control Center

Mount the control center using the flanges at the back of the enclosure in an upright vertical position. Locate it within sight of the disposer, adhering to local codes. If mounting to a sink table, recess the box so the buttons do not extend beyond the table's edge.

NOTICE: Use of more than two solenoid valves can affect the control center's function, potentially causing reduced voltage and solenoid actuation.

Plumbing Connections

The flow control valve, syphon breaker, and solenoid valve are typically included with complete disposer packages. Ensure the solenoid valve has the correct voltage and is plumbed according to the water flow direction arrows on the valve. The flow control valve regulates water to the disposer, conserving water and preventing overload. The syphon breaker must be installed above the sink flood level, following local plumbing codes and checking water flow direction.

Figure 2: Typical Installation Diagram depicts the plumbing setup.

Electrical Connections

WARNING: Turn off electrical supply before any work. Use a voltmeter to confirm power is off. All installation must comply with local electrical and plumbing codes. Ensure all control centers and disposers are properly grounded. A fused disconnect at the electrical supply source is required.

NOTICE: Verify that the control center voltage and phase match the disposer motor and electrical supply. Refer to wiring diagrams in this manual for correct connections. Use NEMA 4 watertight electrical connectors for connections to the control center.

Connect the incoming line power and disposer motor to the labeled terminal block. Wire the disposer motor for the correct voltage as per the diagram inside the motor terminal box. Ensure the solenoid valve voltage matches the control panel and supply power. Connect the water solenoid valve according to the relevant wiring diagram (Figures 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10).

Time Delay Relay (Optional):

A time delay relay can be used to delay the solenoid valve shut-off, providing a post-flush to help prevent drain line stoppages, especially in systems with many bends or long horizontal runs. It is adjustable from 0 to 10 minutes, with a factory setting of approximately 5 minutes. To adjust, turn off electric power, locate the adjustment potentiometer inside the unit, and turn clockwise to increase delay or counterclockwise to decrease delay.

Ensure the time delay relay and solenoid valve voltage ratings match the disposer motor and line voltage.

Figure 3: 120V or 208/240V Time Delay Relay shows a typical time delay relay.

Operating Instructions/Troubleshooting

WARNING: Only trained personnel should operate the disposer. Use baffles and guarding to prevent splashing. Do not insert fingers or hands into the disposer. Use long-handled tongs or pliers for removing objects. Turn off power before clearing jams or removing objects.

Operating Instructions:

To Start: 1. Ensure disposer is free of foreign objects. 2. Ensure power is on. 3. Push the start button. The disposer motor will run, and water will flow.

To Stop: 1. Push the stop button. The disposer motor and water flow will cease.

Troubleshooting:

A. Disposer motor will not start and water does not flow: Check for incoming line power.

B. Disposer motor stops while grinding but water continues to flow: 1. Disposer may be jammed; follow unjamming instructions. 2. Disposer motor overload protector may have tripped; follow instructions in C1.

C. Disposer will not start but water flows: 1. Disposer overload protector may have tripped; locate and press the red reset button on the disposer's electrical cover. If the motor was running, wait five minutes for it to cool before restarting. 2. Disposer may be jammed; follow unjamming instructions.

D. Water flows constantly before start button is pushed: 1. Water solenoid valve may be installed backward; ensure it is oriented with the water flow arrow. 2. Water solenoid valve may be wired incorrectly; recheck the wiring diagram.

E. Overload trips frequently: Avoid overloading the disposer with excessive food waste and water. Refer to disposer instructions for recommended water flows.
