Mounting

  1. Mount the HZ322 TrueZONE panel near the HVAC equipment. It can be located on a wall, stud, roof truss, or cold-air return. The panel can be mounted in any orientation; level it for appearance only.
  2. Separate the zone panel cover from the base. Use the base as a template to drill mounting holes. Attach the base to the wall, stud, roof truss, or duct with appropriate screws (not included).

Figure 2 shows the mounting location options. Figure 3 illustrates separating the panel cover and using the base as a template for mounting holes. The diagram indicates using two screws for attaching to a stud or roof truss, and four screws for duct or drywall/plaster installation.

Wiring

CAUTION: Voltage Hazard. Can cause electrical shock or equipment damage. Disconnect power before beginning installation. Wire entire panel before applying transformer power.

Follow the wiring steps provided. Wiring will vary depending on the equipment. Refer to page 5 for conventional systems and page 6 for heat pump systems. Wiring must comply with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations. Use the provided wiring diagrams to connect the zone panel to thermostats and dampers.

Install thermostats according to the instructions provided with them. Connect thermostats to the zone panel by stripping approximately 1/4 inch of insulation from the wire and pushing it into the terminal. To release a wire, press the button on top of the terminal. In retrofit applications, trim the end of the wire if it is not straight.

Figure 4 shows how to connect wires to the panel terminals. Figure 5 highlights the wire management features of the HZ322, including channels on the sides and a wiring anchor with a cable tie.

Install dampers according to the instructions provided with them. Connect dampers to the zone panel. Multiple dampers can be wired in parallel.

Figure 6 provides wiring diagrams for different damper types: ARD or ZD damper (spring-open, power-closed) and RRD or MARD damper (power-open, power-closed).

Connect DATS (Discharge Air Temperature Sensor) as shown in Figure 7. Refer to Table 5 in "Advanced Configuration" on page 8 for high and low limit settings. For DATS placement in the supply duct and troubleshooting, see the Discharge Air Temperature Installation Instructions (Form Number 69-1521).

Connect equipment as shown in Figure 8, which also includes diagrams for conventional systems (Figure 11) and heat pump systems (Figure 12).

Conventional System Wiring: Figure 11 provides an overall view of wiring for a conventional system.

Heat Pump System Wiring: Figure 12 shows wiring for a heat pump with electric auxiliary heat. Note that conventional thermostats can be used, but auxiliary heat control requires heat pump thermostats. The diagram illustrates using a heat pump thermostat.

Wireless Device Wiring: If using a wireless thermostat, Portable Comfort Control, wireless outdoor air temperature sensor, or other RedLINK™ wireless device, wire the THM4000 Wireless Adapter Module to the ABCD terminals on the zone panel (Figure 9). CAUTION: Only the THM4000R can be wired to the A-B-C-D terminals on the HZ322. Wiring other modules like THM5320R or THM5421R to these terminals will cause damage.

Connect a dedicated transformer as shown in Figure 10.

Important Notes on Wiring:

Configuration

To enter Configuration mode, press the Mode button until the Config LED lights up. Use the Back and Next buttons to navigate through the settings. Use the Left and Right arrow buttons (Adjust Setting) to scroll through choices. Pressing Next confirms the selection and moves to the next menu item.

Figure 13 provides a flowchart for basic zone panel configuration. Figure 14 illustrates the configuration interface with buttons for Back, Adjust Setting, and Next.

Basic Configuration Options:

Notes on Configuration:

Advanced Configuration:

Table 6 details the advanced configuration settings, including menu names, titles, options, descriptions, and notes. These settings allow for fine-tuning of system operation, such as fan control during heat, purge timers, damper behavior during purge, auto changeover delays, and Discharge Air Temperature (DATS) sensor settings.

LED Operation:

The HZ322 panel features LEDs that indicate system and zone status. Table 7 describes the function of each LED:

Figure 16 shows the LED indicators on the HZ322 panel.

For users preferring French or Spanish labels, they are available in Form 69-2199FS.

Connect Wireless Devices

To connect wireless devices, press the Mode button until the Wireless LED lights up. The TrueZONE must be configured for wireless devices first. Press Next to add devices. While the display shows "Press Connect" and "Exit" screens, push the Connect button(s) on the wireless device(s) or follow the device's instructions. Press Next to exit.

Figure 15 illustrates the process of connecting wireless devices.

Checkout

To enter Checkout mode, with the zone panel cover removed, press the Mode button until the Checkout LED lights up. Use the Adjust Setting and Next buttons to navigate through the checkout menu as listed in Table 8.

Steps 3-10 cycle through heating, cooling stages, and damper open/close operations to verify equipment and damper functionality. These steps energize the equipment and damper terminals.

Steps 11-14 verify thermostat operation and wiring by making thermostats call for heat or cool and observing the active wires on the LCD screen. This helps troubleshoot which thermostat terminals are energized.
