General Information
For driving, the vehicle manufacturer's specifications regarding trailer load and nose weight are decisive. The values specified for the towing hitch must not be exceeded.
The towing hitch is designed for towing trailers equipped with ball couplings and for use with load carriers approved for attachment to the towing hitch. Any other use is prohibited. Operation must be adapted to road conditions. The vehicle's handling is affected when a trailer is being towed. Always follow the vehicle manufacturer's instructions.
The factory-approved mounting points specified by the vehicle manufacturer are used. National directives concerning official approval of auxiliary equipment must be observed. These installation and operating instructions must be enclosed with the vehicle papers.
Mounting Instructions
The towing hitch is a safety component and must only be installed by qualified personnel.
- Any alteration or conversion to the towing hitch is prohibited and will lead to cancellation of the operating permit/design certification.
- Remove any insulating compound or underseal from the vehicle in the area of the hitch's mating surfaces.
- Seal any bare bodywork and bores with anti-corrosive paint.
Diagram Description: The manual contains detailed step-by-step diagrams illustrating the installation process. These steps cover preparing the vehicle (e.g., removing exhaust components, accessing mounting points), attaching the main hitch bracket and support arms using specific hardware, and securing the tow ball assembly.
Operating Instructions
- After approximately 1000 km of towing, re-tighten all securing bolts of the towing hitch with the specified torques.
- Keep the coupling ball clean and greased. However, if using stabilization devices like the Westfalia "SSK", the coupling ball must be free from grease. Follow the instructions in the respective operating manuals.
- If the coupling ball diameter reaches 49.0 mm or less at any point, the towing hitch must no longer be used for safety reasons.
- After the towing hitch is fitted, the empty weight of the vehicle increases by approximately 15 kg.
Parts and Components
The kit includes various parts for installation:
- Main hitch bracket (1x)
- Tow ball assembly (1x)
- Mounting plates/brackets (various, e.g., 1x, 1x)
- Hardware including bolts, nuts, and washers (e.g., M12x75, M12x35, M12x30, M10x1.25x40, M10x25, 13x24x2.5, 10.5x30x3, 10.5x21x2, M12, M10).
Diagram Description: Detailed diagrams and a parts list (pages 21-23) show all components included in the kit, specifying quantities and types of hardware.
Safety and Clearance Requirements
Adherence to specific clearance zones around the towing hitch and vehicle is required, as depicted in the diagrams.
Diagram Description: Diagrams on page 24 illustrate required clearance zones (e.g., max 30° angles, minimum distances) and vehicle weight considerations.
